Having a wobble on his name!

We registered our son yesterday. My partners favourite name was Elliot, but we agreed on Arthur. I then had a last minute change of mind and we went for Samuel, and now I’m not sure I made the right decision. I’m wondering if I should have stuck to Arthur, or even Elliot... I’m worried Samuel/Sam is too plain. We can change it if we want but I worry if we change it I will still feel unsure. Can anyone maybe put me OFF the names Elliot and Arthur? Or should I change his name? I’m kicking myself for rushing into registering him but I just can’t decide what name to choose.

If your having doubts it's not the right name then, it's not the right name.
Sam is nice though and I prefer it over Arthur (too old man sounding) and Elliot sounds a bit wet to me.

Redskyyy · 24/03/2021 10:13

Agree! Go with your gut. Who (which name) do you see this little person as? I hesitated over names for ages because it felt like such a big commitment! I actually like Sam best from those 3, but if you are having doubts I would change it.

Elliot, Arthur and Samuel are all great names and none of them are plain. But if you want me to put you off:

  • Arthur is really, really popular right now. He'll be one of several Arthurs in his school. He may also be called Arfur, depending on where you live.
  • With Elliot, he'll be constantly saying "two l's, one t", but still people will spell it wrong.

But these are minor issues and don't be put off if they're the names you like. Does one name appeal to you more? The coin flip test can be useful here. Not that you should name your child by the toss of a coin (I mean, you can if you want), but whether you feel satisfied with the result or whether you keep flipping to get a different result shows you what you really want in your heart.

I like Samuel, it gives lots of options for him when he is older.

Which name suits him best?

Flymetothestars · 24/03/2021 10:16

Arthur is more common than Samuel though isn't it?
Why is Samuel dull/plain but not Arthur? I don't follow.
I personally love all three of your option so I'm not much help at all am I

It's really not a big deal to change the name

Calm yourself down and take deep breaths because you don't need to decide today, this week, this month.... just give it some thought and don't rush yourself

skeggycaggy · 24/03/2021 10:19

Sam is actually the nicest of those names imo!

Samuel is 41st, Arthur is number 4, didn’t realise it had become so popular!

ThatOtherPoster · 24/03/2021 10:20

I love the name Arthur, she wrote, unhelpfully.

I wobbled with DS2’s name for over a week. I also know someone who went back and changed their baby’s name (to a worse one, IMO!) in that first year. You’ve got lots of time. I’d say wait, breathe, and give it a month to see which name best suits him. (He won’t ever remember being called the “wrong” name.)

ILoveShula · 24/03/2021 10:21

Sam's the best of the three names. I like Samuel, Sam and Sammy.
Good choice.

Iworry2021 · 24/03/2021 10:22

I had to smile when I read this post.

Our son was born August 2020 and we named him Samuel.

We wanted to name him Samuel Elliot, but went with a different middle name in the end to honour my partner's culture.

Samuel is really not a terribly common name, but it's beautiful, sounds so nice when you say it and just perfectly fits our little boy.

It's also a robust name, meaning it won't look crazy on job applications.

I think you made a really good choice.

Iworry2021 · 24/03/2021 10:25

By the way, did you know that there's an actor called Sam Elliott?

I wasn't aware before the baby naming business.

TheVanguardSix · 24/03/2021 10:31

By the way, did you know that there's an actor called Sam Elliott?

The man is a legend! He is one of the main reasons The Big Lebowski is such an epic and cult film. I'd name my son Sam Elliott with absolute pride!
OP, why don't you go with that? It's a great name: Samuel Elliott.
And Samuel is a wonderful name. He will really become your 'Sam' and really own his name.. Try not to wobble. I understand though. know I had a big wobble, 19+ years ago when I went in to register DC1. I'm so glad I just stuck down the name that, in retrospect, came from my heart. At the time, I was panicking a bit. But I LOVE DC1's name.

pinacollama · 24/03/2021 10:34

Samuel is a lovely name, as are Sammy and Sam. I think you made the perfect choice.

PandaFluff · 24/03/2021 10:34

If it helps I always struggle to spell Elliott is it one L, one T two of each?

Viviennemary · 24/03/2021 10:36

Don't like Elliot at all. Not keen on Arthur. Sam/Samuel is fine. Much better than the other two.

PandaFluff · 24/03/2021 10:37

Round here it is always pronounced R-fur

AnyaMoondial · 24/03/2021 10:39

I really love Samuel. One of my favourite names.

ShyTown · 24/03/2021 10:41

They’re all lovely names but I like Samuel/Sam/Sammy best of all.

Drunkenmonkey · 24/03/2021 11:10

It doesn't matter which one we like, you have to be sure. Give it some time and try each name for a few days. For what it's worth I like Samuel more than Arthur.

Monkeytapper · 24/03/2021 11:11

Samuel is a great name, stick with that

Velvian · 24/03/2021 11:14

I have a Samuel (Sam) and he is the only one at his large primary school. He is also the sweetest boy ever (unbiased fact! Bear).

Spied · 24/03/2021 11:17

Of the three I much prefer Samuel.
I think Arthur is very common popular.
Elliott, I always think looks and sounds feminine. It always reminds me of ET too.

stuckinarutatwork · 24/03/2021 12:43

I like all of the names but Elliot has its issues with spelling (one 'l' or two? One 't' or two?).
Arthur is VERY popular round here.
Samuel is classic but nice. I like Sam too.

But go with your gut feeling.

partyatthepalace · 24/03/2021 13:26

I'd agree - go with your gut.

But if you instinct has deserted you - I think you made the right choice - Sam/uel is a great classic, and really not overused right now. Arthur is lovely but it's been done to death, Elliot is alright but a bit fussy, and much less rich history than the other two.

If you still aren't sure - give yourself a week to sleep on it.

mogtheexcellent · 24/03/2021 13:34

samuel is lovely and sam is a great shortening. Elliott cant really beshortend and Art or Artie for arthure is nowhere as nice.

You changed at the last minute because you knew it wasnt right.

If it helps all the eliotts I know are a lot older. Several arthurs at DDs infant school. Only one sam - who is lovely.

mogtheexcellent · 24/03/2021 13:35
