Beautiful, elegant sounding and Shakespearean - but I just can't get past the pig thing. Normally I'm not bothered by name meaning (I love the names Claudia and Cecilia with their horrible Latin meanings), but similar "Porcine" is a well known word in English , so I think some kids may become aware of the meaning of Portia.

You could consider similar Celia, which is also Shakespearean but has a lovely meaning -"heavenly"?

SenoraSurf · 23/03/2021 20:31

I've met several portias over the years Grin all lovely women and all strippers Wink

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 23/03/2021 20:33

But in the UK there have been between 7 and 32 girls each year named Portia over the last 25 years so clearly many parents are braver than me!

KoalaLlama · 23/03/2021 20:36

I’ve always liked it! It’s a very beautiful and classical name, and not overused.

Incidentally, I had a huge crush on a girl called Portia who was in the upper sixth of my school when I was in the fourth form. She was so incredibly elegant and glamorous, and hugely clever. Wonder what she’s up to now!

AgeLikeWine · 23/03/2021 20:36

I like Portia. It’s different, but in a good way.

partyatthepalace · 23/03/2021 21:59

Honestly, no child would connect Portia with pigs - maybe the car... it’s a nice name and not super unusual. (And those strippers the Pp met must have been quite posh strippers)

But OP if the pigs and strippers have put you off Perdita is a nice alternative.

DramaAlpaca · 23/03/2021 22:02

Perdita is a nice alternative with a very sad meaning - 'lost'.

I don't like Portia much. Hard looking but soft sounding, it doesn't appeal to me at all.

FlyingByTheSeatof · 23/03/2021 22:08

I've always liked Portia.

What makes me laugh is when people spell it Porsche Grin

Orphlids · 24/03/2021 00:42

Portia is lovely, very elegant. Perdita is a beautiful alternative, as is Petra.

ILoveStickers · 24/03/2021 05:59

It's not for me. Sounds identical to the car, and if people know how to spell it it's just far too posh.

I love more commonly used Roman names like Julia and Livia. They feel more wearable.

stressbandit · 24/03/2021 07:44

I love this name but most people i know would think straight away of real housewives of Atlanta. Still doesn't put me off.

Violetlavenders · 24/03/2021 08:05

I like it. Beautiful, classic and not overused.

KirstenBlest · 24/03/2021 08:43

We considered it.

emmathedilemma · 24/03/2021 09:41

I'm afraid it's more stripper than Shakespeare for me.

Violetlavenders · 24/03/2021 14:07

What famous stripper is called Portia? Confused

OysterMonkey · 24/03/2021 14:15

It’s gorgeous, and I’d only associate it with Shakespeare.

BurtonHouse · 24/03/2021 18:19

In my head I hear Rumpole saying "the Portia of our chambers"
It has a certain gravitas

Kiehl · 24/03/2021 19:50

Oh I like it. It's unusual and not the usual dull suggestions

daisiesinmay · 24/03/2021 21:06

Lady Featherington in Bridgerton is a Portia

StellaKowalski · 25/03/2021 11:50

That was my first thought too Grin
stormelf · 25/03/2021 11:57

I really like it. I love Venetia as well which has similar ring to it, unfortunately Dh says we aren't posh enough for it. To be fair, we really aren't

Kokeshi123 · 25/03/2021 13:26

Looks like "portly"--makes me think of a large bulky woman with a round, fat face.

Roszie · 25/03/2021 13:48

I'd be concerned people think I'm a big fan of the cars
