Kit

Baby no 2 on the way, unknown sex.

We both like 'Kit' - for either girl or boy.

Do you think boy or girl when you are the name on paper?

ChelseaCat · 22/03/2021 14:51

Definitely a boy - it’s a nickname for Christopher.

Kitty is a cute and similar nickname for a girl

Vomadetroit · 22/03/2021 14:52

Boy. I would never ever consider that Kit could be a girl

Dnadoon · 22/03/2021 14:52

Love it ! I know two little boys called Kit. Would be lovely for a girl too.

partyatthepalace · 22/03/2021 14:54

Either, more often a boy

Short for Christopher or Kester for a boy
Or Katherine or Christina etc for a girl

legohaus · 22/03/2021 14:57

It's definitely a unisex name. I love it for a girl, but have a slight worry that people might assume she's a male if they saw it written down - on a CV or email for example.

But - does that really matter?

We're not keen on it as a nn for a longer name e.g Katherine

Definitely unisex - Kit for Katherine has been used for centuries.

However I wouldn’t use it as a full name to be honest - it’s too nick namey and gender neutral - but as a nick name for any version of Christopher (male or female) or version of Katherine, I think it’s great. There are at least a lot to choose from...

KirstenBlest · 22/03/2021 15:49

Kit for a girl when it's a currently trendy boy's name is unfair.

Kit is one of those names that was a quite nice nickname for Christopher is now a rooney name.

Kitty for a girl is ok, but too 'Hello Kitty' for my taste.

isastillgame · 22/03/2021 16:05

I'd have assumed male if I saw it written on a CV or email, short for Christopher.

Appreciate it has been used also as a short for Katherine, but I'd be surprised to see a girl to be honest.

Tamingofthehamster · 22/03/2021 16:08

Love it for a boy. Would go with Kat for a girl.

AlwaysLatte · 22/03/2021 16:14

I like it, but you would have to be ok with some people inevitably not pronouncing it properly and leaving the T off the end, so although I love the name we discounted it for that reason.

Violetlavenders · 22/03/2021 16:30

Girl. Kit is short for Kitty.

Violetlavenders · 22/03/2021 16:31

It actually sounds short for Kitten 🐈‍⬛. So girl or boy!

MrsMoastyToasty · 22/03/2021 16:35

I've known 2 people called Kit. One was really Christopher and the other was Kathleen.

mathanxiety · 22/03/2021 16:36

I wouldn't assume boy after seeing a recent season of The Bachelor.

I think it's nice for either boy or girl.

Flymetothestars · 22/03/2021 16:40

I love it for a boy or girl and agree I prefer it as a stand-alone name

Most CVs are anonymised for big firms now @legohaus , it'll be standard practise across the board soon as it's been found to be a fairer fairer way to select candidates for interview

sarah13xx · 22/03/2021 16:40

I like it for a boy, I know a wee boy called Kit and really like it 😊 My partner won’t let me add it to our list for our boy though. Haven’t heard it for a girl but probably could work too

RunningFromInsanity · 22/03/2021 16:42

It’s a boys name now.
Kitty is a female version.

Badger2021 · 22/03/2021 16:42

I think car.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 22/03/2021 16:59

Too trendy as a given name for me - I think it will date. I do love Kit as an vintage/retro style nn though (for both sexes) - along with similar Hal, Ned, Jem etc for boys and Nell, Bess, Meg etc for girls.

Violetlavenders · 22/03/2021 17:28

Kitty is a female version.

Then Kit is a great short form for Kitty.

I prefer it for a girl.

Twizbe · 22/03/2021 17:34

I went to uni with a female Kit. She was lovely. Very smart, tall, elegant girl. I'd not met a male Kit before that so always assumed it was a girls name.

I'm not sure if it was short for anything ... I don't think so as I think at graduation she was announced as Kit...

My mum has a unisex name. Mostly it's ok but she has had a few instances where people have assumed she's male. The most embarrassing one was when she went into hospital for an endometrial ablation and they put her on a male surgical ward ...

PattyPan · 22/03/2021 20:34

I would 100% assume male and short for Christopher.
I had a female relative who was Kitty, short for Catherine.
It would be meh as a nickname for a girl but I really don't like it as the full given name.

notalwaysalondoner · 23/03/2021 15:50

I LOVE it for a boy, but would use Christopher officially. But agree with other posters, if you just went for Kit, I would assume it was a boy, so this is a risk if you call a girl Kit rather than Kitty or Katherine for example.

ONS says 274 babies were called Kit in 2019 and only 3 girls - so it's safe to say everyone will make that assumption.

VenusClapTrap · 23/03/2021 23:06

Love it for a boy. Prefer Kitty for a girl.
