Aparantly it is of Persian, Iranian origin meaning "fairy".

I like it. Depending who you speak to they might think it is Paris.

partyatthepalace · 20/03/2021 17:50

Sweet. Sounds more like a nick name though.

Weekendweekend · 20/03/2021 19:05

@PandaFluff Ah I didn’t realise it has Persian origins! @partyatthepalace I was also worried about it sounding like Paris!!

I didn't either I googled it. It sounds pretty.

Roszie · 20/03/2021 19:12

I like it.

StealthPolarBear · 20/03/2021 19:14

Never heard it before, lovely. I do agree it sounds like it might be short for something

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 20/03/2021 19:30

Pretty, even though it sounds close to Paris (when said the French way). But I don't think it's a big problem - after all Paris is an ancient name too (admittedly traditionally for boys).

There are longer options of Pari like Parineeti, Parina and Parisa but I’m not sure about them tbh I prefer Pari, but it does seem like a nickname. So confused!

Just thought I should revive this as I’m still unsure & need your wise opinions! Halo
Do you think a longer version of Pari is necessary?
Parisa is Persian so I think either Parina or Parineeti could be the longer Indian name but I don’t know if I like them! There isn’t really any other name which can have Pari as a nn, unless you know any others?
Confused

Oooh I like Parina!

CakesOfVersailles · 24/03/2021 11:19

I quite like it, I've only seen it in a Khaled Hosseini novel (And The Mountains Echoed, I think).

I don't really like nicknames used as full names but Pari seems like a stand alone name to me.

drainrat · 24/03/2021 14:28

Parul or Priyanka were my first thoughts if you wanted Pari as a nickname.

Supriya is another one, although more usually shortened to Priya.

I adore the name Premila although it’s considered very old fashioned now.

Pa-ree pronunciation! Thanks xx
Are you Indian? If in an Indian area expect her to be called puri if someone’s teasing her - one of my friends’ dd’s got bullied like anything when she weed herself and was called pani puri.
GrumpyHoonMain · 24/03/2021 14:32

Pari technically means ghoul. Lol Asian and Middle eastern fairies aren’t good little things with wings.

drainrat · 24/03/2021 14:39

@GrumpyHoonMain (great user name) a pari isn’t a ghoul - it’s a little mischievous house fairy which moves things about, turns things upside down. Hence often used as a nickname for toddler daughters.

A djinn is a ghoul.

drainrat · 24/03/2021 14:40

It’s pronounced purri by the way - not like puri!

Depends on the language. In mine it def means ghoul and that’s why it’s used to describe girls. It’s not considered a good nickname at all but is popular as in my culture we don’t give good nicknames to kids to combat ‘nazar’. Eg my husband’s childhood nickname is ‘trash’

drainrat · 24/03/2021 14:55

Fair point. We have no concept of ‘nazar’ in UP, quite a Punjabi thing I think?

I love the Lata Mangeshwar song about the ‘Nanhi Pari’.

drainrat · 24/03/2021 14:57

And correcting my own translation, a djinn is a genie, not a ghoul; more morally and spiritually ambivalent.
