Robert is great - classic/traditional and classless but currently underused with a variety of different style nn's, so he can choose what suits him best - Rob/Robbie/Bob/Bobby/Bert/Bertie.

Rupert still has a bit of an upper class vibe in some circles, Jack is super popular (although classic John, nn Jack or Johnny less so?) and Hugo currently very trendy so may date (although again, classic Hugh nn Hugo or Huey is less so?).

Rupert - I love this and love Too as a nickname
Jack - I really like Jack but think it depends where you live. I've met maybe 5 over the 18 years I've been a parent - but I think it must be super popular in other areas. I think it goes well with Louis.
Robert - meh. The Roberts I've met have all been perfectly pleasant but I find the name bland. The youngest I know is 11. I love Bobbie as a girl's nn for Roberta but just not keen on Robert
Hugo - I love love this name. This would definitely be my favourite.

Robert, under used and its a great name with lots of nickname potential

Quaagars · 20/03/2021 01:13

Jack

Really don't like Rupert, but that's just me lol

Tavannach · 20/03/2021 01:16

Jack or Robert.

movingmelly · 20/03/2021 01:24

Jack is brilliant, and sounds great with Louie.
Also, I'd avoid Hugo and Rupert if brother is Louie, they feel a bit too similar in tone..
Jack or Robert would work better.

Thanks everyone! Mixed opinions on here, it seems that a quite a few have hate love relationship with Hugo and Rupert.

We cannot call him Hugh, I did however say to my husband a nickname can evolve naturally if he wants it to? I'm German and just seeing the Germans mispronounce it makes me feel uneasy. I really liked Arthur but having an Arser was never on the cards (German pronunciation) - I don't have a strong accent as lived here since I've been a teenager.

Jack seems to be rather popular, so probably a no (although there is lots of Louis' and I still love my little boys name).

Robert - classic but a few do say it's a bit meh haha

Rupert or Robert are nice. They’re different versions of the same name.
Not Jack. It’s inoffensive but a bit boring. It’s also really short for John, so it has a very different feel to Louis. I’m not wild about Hugo.

SylvanianFrenemies · 20/03/2021 08:02

Robert

micc · 20/03/2021 08:11

Jack

DinosaurDiana · 20/03/2021 08:11

Jack.

MinnieJackson · 20/03/2021 08:19

Jack. I think Hugo may get changed to ,'Hughy' and then you'd have Hughy and Louis

CakeRattleandRoll · 20/03/2021 16:30

Robert = love it
Jack = v popular
Hugo = nice but agree with pp about Hughie and Louis
Rupert = Murdoch

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 20/03/2021 19:54

Jack seems to be rather popular, so probably a no (although there is lots of Louis' and I still love my little boys name).

While Jack is a lot more popular the Louis (in the UK at least), it is decreasing year on year, plus there will be regional variations (also statistically he's still likely to be the only one in his class - I know a few Jack's of different ages and they all have been, even if there was another in their year).

Also because it has always been popular (whether as a given name or as a nn for John), like Robert, it's one of those classic names that won't date. Both Jack/John and Louis, and Robert and Louis work well together.

Happenchance · 20/03/2021 19:58

Jack by a long way.

finallychangedmyusername · 20/03/2021 21:17

Louis and Rupert is wonderful.

Roo is a lovely nickname too. Robert I like but only in full (dislike Robbie, Rob, Bob, Bobby, Bertie). Hugo is ok and Jack is great. With Louis I really love Rupert the most.

resm · 20/03/2021 21:34

Love Robert, also like Jack.

WildCherryBlossom · 21/03/2021 07:14

If you have a Robert and a Louis people will expect your next son to be Stevenson. So I would rule out Robert personally.

I've known a half German, half English Rupert before. Seemed to work well in both languages.

I really don't think Hugo would be nicknamed Hughie. That is a nickname for Hugh, not Hugo.

whattodo2019 · 21/03/2021 07:19

Rupert. it's a fab bane and hardly used x

blondie87 · 21/03/2021 19:23

Hugo

cheesebubble · 21/03/2021 19:45

I have to say I love Rupert, I know some of you don't like it but it does work really well in both languages.
