Love Lawrence
So familiar yet underused. The perfect combination

Marshmon · 18/03/2021 17:14

Courtney is my favourite girls name on the list

helpmum2003 · 18/03/2021 17:14

Courtney - personally find it chavvy
Sorrelle - like it and unusual but would use standard spelling Sorrel
Elspeth - like it pretty
Meredith - ok

Boys:
Lawrence - ok, sweet with nn Lawrie
Arthur - love it
Rafael - ok if Spanish/Italian, not sure if UK
Pascal - ditto ok if French

AnyaMoondial · 18/03/2021 17:27

Elspeth is one of the finest names ever. Also like Meredith.

Lawrence and Arthur are both good.

emmathedilemma · 18/03/2021 17:41

What an interesting mix of names!
Courtney - awful
Sorrelle - nice but agree with PP about the spelling of Sorrel
Elspeth - nice, underused
Meredith - ok, but not keen on the subsequent nn Merry

Lawrence - nice, probably due a revival along with other "old men" names
Arthur - nice but potentially overused these days?
Rafael - best kept for teenage turtles
Pascal - not unless you're a character in a french school text book

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 18/03/2021 17:47

Lawrence and Elspeth (although I personally prefer the more popular Laurence spelling). Second choice Arthur and Meredith. Not keen on the others, sorry.

Bunnybigears · 18/03/2021 17:48

Girls:

Courtney - a bit chavvy
Sorrelle - sounds like a herb
Elspeth - nice, Elsie as a nickname
Meredith - old fashioned, not in a good way

Boys:
Lawrence - nice but a bit of a mouthful so will get shortened
Arthur - very popular
Rafael - are you Italian?
Pascal - are you French?

florascotia2 · 18/03/2021 17:50

Sorelle is the name of a cheap clothing range - just google. It also used to be the name of cheap bubblebath etc. To my utter astonishment, examples of this brand are now being traded as vintage/antiques www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/1960-jean-sorelle-ltd-london-sorella-493373982
The usual spelling of the name is - as pp has said - Sorrel. It's fine. It's a green herb. Very nice. Country/nature vibe. Also it tastes quite sharp and lemony - that might suggest that a child with the name would be quick-witted also.
Elspeth is really nice.
Meredith is to me a surname or boy's name (Welsh).
Courtney is another surname. It has for centuries also been a boy's name; now it just reminds me of celebs.

Lawrence, Arthur, Pascal = all good names.
Rafael is also a nice name but it seems to be having - as Mumsnetters say - rather a moment.

KirstenBlest · 18/03/2021 18:12

Courtney - a bit too Friends. Man's name in some countries
Sorrelle - no. Sorrel is better but as herbs go it's a weed
Elspeth - fine
Meredith - ugly and harsh-sounding

Lawrence - prefer Laurence. seems a bit wet
Arthur - very popular
Rafael - no
Pascal - rhymes with rascal?

scentedgeranium · 18/03/2021 18:13

Sorrelle sounds like a wild mushroom
I know a Sorrel in her twenties who has worn the name well

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 18/03/2021 18:20

Lawrence has been one of my favs for years. Unfortunately DH vetoed it.

I like Sorrel but not Sorelle which just looks like a daft yoonique spelling to me.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 18/03/2021 18:26

I only like Courtney out of your girls names. I can see why some people think its chavvy, though.
Meredith is particularly awful. Very harsh and unfriendly.
I love the sound of Pascal, but I think you'd have to be French or of very high class to carry it off, if either one of those apply to you, I say go for it.
Lawrence is probably the best out of your boy names, but I don't like it personally. I've never got the sudden surge of love for Arthur and for me Rafael will always be a ninja turtle.

PlanetPuddle · 18/03/2021 19:10

Lawrence is lovely!

Odile13 · 18/03/2021 20:06

I like Meredith - it’s pretty and not used much. Courtney is nice too.

Rafael is a nice name if you have an Italian link. Lawrence is ok too - will probable be shortened to Laurie I guess.

Spudbyanyothername · 18/03/2021 20:11

Meredith - like
Elsbeth - really like but my Mum said it’s like you are saying Elizabeth with a lisp and I never got over it.
Sorrelle- never heard of before, sounds like an ice-cream or a herb
Courtney- makes me think of Courtney Love/ would never use

Arthur - love
Lawrence- love
Pascal - like but uncommon
Rafael - like

Ikeameatballs · 18/03/2021 20:13

Order of preference:
Elspeth
Meredith
Sorrelle
Courtney

Lawrence
Arthur
Rafael
Pascal

CormoranStrike · 18/03/2021 20:14

Meredith and Lawrence from your list.

DramaAlpaca · 18/03/2021 20:19

The only name I like on either of your lists is Lawrence.

Just to point out, the spelling Lawrence is usually the surname. The traditional spelling for the first name version is Laurence.

partyatthepalace · 18/03/2021 20:42

Courtney - awful
Sorrelle - ok only if you spell it Sorrel
Elspeth - lovely
Meredith - lovely

Boys:
Lawrence - lovely (with a u is more usual)
Arthur -lovely but very overused.
Rafael - nice (with a ph is more usual)
Pascal - ok.

MercyBodle · 19/03/2021 01:56

Elspeth and Rafael - great!

PlanetSmurf · 19/03/2021 02:22

Courtney - not keen
Sorrelle - agree with PP Sorrel is nice
Elspeth - love it!
Meredith - ok

Lawrence - lovely
Arthur - like it
Rafael - ok
Pascal - not keen

movingmelly · 20/03/2021 01:33

Elspeth and Meredith are beautiful.
Courtney isn't very nice, and not a fan or Sorelle.

Love Arthur, Pascal and Rafael - really dislike Lawrence as very old fashioned and try-hard, also way too overused now - would avoid that at all costs, especially when you have such lovely alternatives. Pascal especially, beautiful :-)

Onlinedilema · 20/03/2021 07:16

Elspeth and Lawrence.

ShipOfTheseus · 20/03/2021 08:13

They’re a mixed bag. I find it odd that someone would put them on their list!

The only girl’s name I like - and I like it a lot - is Elspeth. Meredith and Courtney are downmarket. They’re really boy’s names/surnames. Sorrelle is odd. Sorrel is nice, if you mean that.

Lawrence is really good for a boy. A normal classic name. Arthur is trendy and on the way out. Pascal - only if you are French. Rafael - is that the Spanish spelling? Raphael is OK, but a bit flouncy for me.

VenusClapTrap · 20/03/2021 09:23

Ooh, some lovely and interesting names there!

I like all your boys names. I don’t think I’ve ever said that on here! My pick would be Lawrence.

I’d stick with the Sorrel spelling, but this is my favourite of your girls names. The only one I dislike is Courtney. Elspeth and Meredith are both pretty.
