Thoughts on Samuel?

I think you can't really go wrong with it, although I'm not overly keen on Sam which I'm guessing will inevitably be what he goes by?

It's a good name but I don't like it. If you don't like Sam though forget it

Chouxbuncity · 13/03/2021 17:32

I’m not mad keen but there’s nothing wrong with it. If you don’t like Sam I wouldn’t go for it.

PotteringAlong · 13/03/2021 17:33

I’ve got one! He’s always Samuel, never sam.

MrsFin · 13/03/2021 17:36

Do you like Sammy any better than Sam?

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 13/03/2021 18:03

I really love it - a friendly classic that is now falling down the charts, so more useable than ever imo. But he is very likely to become Sam to his friends as he gets older, so I definitely wouldn't use Samuel if you really dislike the most common nn (and unlike other names such as Alexander - nn's Alex, Xander, maybe even Sasha etc, there aren't really other nn's for Samuel).

Drunkenmonkey · 13/03/2021 18:07

Its one of my all time favourites. I love Sammy and Sam. Sams are usually friendly chaps and it is solid and classless. My DH thought it was wet and dull and wouldn't use it.
He will be called Sam though, you never meet a Samuel that isn't called Sam.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 13/03/2021 18:11

I have oneSmile He gets called Sam, Sammy and Samuel at various times. I like the variations, its timeless and adaptable in my opinion.

Coupleofweeksago · 13/03/2021 18:21

I've got an 18 year old Sam. He's never Samuel, always Sam or Sammy. Not overly popular and not too try hard either.

partyatthepalace · 13/03/2021 18:22

You can’t go wrong... except he WILL be called Sam Grin

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 13/03/2021 18:23

Lovely, Sam is beyond your control, and perfectly fine!

DramaAlpaca · 13/03/2021 18:24

It's nice enough. I actually like Sam a lot more than Samuel.

I have an aduktSamuel, he is always Sam unless im annoyed at him.

Orchidflower1 · 13/03/2021 18:27

Lovely name- as others have said nice, not over popular. If you don’t like Sam then I wouldn’t though.

Is it just Sam you don’t like or all abbreviated names?
If the former I’m thinking ....
Edward- Ted/ Teddy/ Eddie/Ed
Benjamin- Ben/ benjie
Albert- Bertie/ Bert

Tanfastic · 13/03/2021 18:30

I've a Samuel. I said he'd never be called Sam but then it just happened. Mainly by his friends and even I find myself calling him it now (he's nearly thirteen). I still prefer Samuel though and try and call him it as much as possible.

Only one person has called him Sammy and I soon put them right.

Meezer2 · 13/03/2021 18:57

Great name! My Samuel is 27 now... nicknamed slink as a child, still call him that mostly now still. 😊

Firebird83 · 14/03/2021 01:36

Love it. Mine has always gone by Sam.
