Is it ok & a usual thing to have two middle names? (Four names in total)

2 is nice i think

SE13Mummy · 14/03/2021 01:00

My DDs each have two middle names. The second one is a family name they could choose to use as a last name but should either change their last name upon marriage, their second middle names will still match and be 'sister names'.

It's not unusual at all. I love names so I can see there is good reason to have 2 middles.

CrayonInThreeBits · 14/03/2021 03:13

My family does this and it's sometimes a slight pain in the arse.

My full name has thirty characters so sometimes there's not enough room to write it, either in physical space on paper or in computer text entry fields. And some things just ask for "middle name" and it's not clear whether it's okay to put both of them with a space or not. Sometimes I get stuff addressed to me with only the first of my two middle initials so presumably some databases can't handle it — so, if my name were Firstname Secondname Thirdname Surname, I'd be getting stuff for Firstname S. Surname or F. S. Surname. Also personalised things (and highscore rankings on pinball tables) — sometimes they only allow three initials, so I have to decide whether to be FSS or FST or just FS, rather than FSTS.

I've also been accused of being posh because of it a couple of times 😂

My DS has two middle names, one of which (a family name) is quite unusual and partially influenced the choice to use two middle names.

Following family tradition for sons and to please grandparents, DC have 2 middle names.
After they were registered, my well travelled brother piped in to say it was PTA when doing visas, arrival documents etc.
It is.

Piccalily19 · 14/03/2021 05:13

I agree with @CrayonInThreeBits I have 2 and to be honest have found it a pain in the arse and I’d rather just have 1.
It’s not ruined my life or anything but I’d rather just have the one! I’ve got Louise (original parents ha) and then a family name, I’d rather just have the family name even though it is slightly old fashioned

Chilldonaldchill · 14/03/2021 09:53

Everyone does in our family and I really like it.

carnations23 · 14/03/2021 09:56

I'm planning on it, DH has chosen a middle name for our child and I want my maiden name as the second middle name.

My DC won't be the only one in the family with 2 middle names, not that a lot of family members do but there are a few with two.

Have travelled extensively and never found that to be the case.

My sister (with the name that won’t fit on passport forms) was an air steward for several years......

DinosaurDiana · 14/03/2021 10:03

Mine do.

DinosaurDiana · 14/03/2021 10:04

It’s no different to a first and middle name, with a double barrelled surname really.

EyeDrops · 14/03/2021 10:09

Both my DDs have two, because we couldn't narrow it down and they all go well together.

bumbledeedum · 14/03/2021 10:13

My DS has 2, a regular name and his dads surname as he has my surname.

lightningpeach · 14/03/2021 10:22

I have two middle names and always liked it, when DS came along we couldn't decide which of two names to use and they flowed nicely so just used both! DD also has two to match the pattern and I think both kids names look and sound really lovely for formal use.

stormelf · 14/03/2021 11:12

I have 1, dh doesn't have any. Both dc have 2, one a middle name to honour family member and my maiden name aa second middle name
