Tacitus

I love this, pronounced the Classical Latin way with the hard c.
Is it one of those names that's really common in a country we don't hear much from?

Ahbahbahbah · 11/03/2021 08:57

@Dailyhandtowelwash - thank you, the benefits of a classical education!

ShesMadeATwatOfMePam · 11/03/2021 08:58

What the actual? Tacitus? Would you like to be called tacitus? I bloody wouldn't.

RinkyD · 11/03/2021 08:59

If said child was going to inherit a Dukedom they yes, otherwise No.

RainingBatsAndFrogs · 11/03/2021 09:19

I wouldn’t.
No one wants to constantly correct pronunciation let alone deliver a history lesson to explain their name.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 11/03/2021 11:25

You'll also get 'hilarious' people calling the child Tassimo and then saying "ooh, I could just do with a coffee now".

If Tacitus effectively means 'shut up' then I think half of the kids I see at the supermarket on a Saturday morning must have that name - maybe it's the new Jack or Olivia?!

ALMOST no one - I bet JRM would simply relish the prospect!

skeggycaggy · 11/03/2021 11:32

I love the Jacob Rees Mogg test.

Lonelycrab · 11/03/2021 11:44

No sorry op it’s awful.

PattyPan · 11/03/2021 11:47

I studied Latin at university and it's a no from me. Maybe as a middle name if you really love it, but don't saddle a child with the nickname Tacky!

SeanChailleach · 11/03/2021 21:16

@Ahbahbahbah , and so many of you, thankyou for making me laugh out loud.
I should make clear I don't have a baby to name, I was just inspired by the Atticus thread.

partyatthepalace · 11/03/2021 22:34

Are you especially trying to name your child after him? If so how about Cornelius? Tacitus really isn’t the greatest name, but Titus, Augustus, Cassius. Atticus etc all work fine

Changechangychange · 12/03/2021 00:45
@WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll jrm?

@SionnachRua that's a little harsh - I have found out that it's not uncommon in Brazil, as Tácito.

Taki is very common as a Greek nickname. I've worked with a Tacu (Romanian).

@greycurtainswithdiamondf oh yes Caractacus!

Interesting to hear the views of those who studied Latin at school.
Tácito is a soft c - pronounced Tassito.

A taquito is something altogether different.

Don’t call your child after a small taco, OR a Roman historian GrinGrin

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 12/03/2021 00:46

Atticus is quite a lofty name to have to live up to.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 12/03/2021 00:48

Glad it's given you a chuckle, SeanChailleach - me too!

By the way, I presume the usernames DanielChailleach and BalonzChailleach were already taken when you joined? Grin

notangelinajolie · 12/03/2021 01:02

It depends in which circles Tacitus will be mixing. To be safe I'd go with Atticus Grin

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 12/03/2021 01:11

Tacitus and Atticus would be fantastic anagram-names for twins, though. Even better if it's triplets - then you can call the other sibling Catsuit Grin

Ahbahbahbah · 12/03/2021 07:42

Caractacus surely?

Used to have a cactus named Caractus. Great cactus name.

SeanChailleach · 12/03/2021 13:42

Does my username make me look male?
It means "OldWoman".
Definitely not Balonz or his friend.

Gutted there isn’t a real baby whose future name hangs in the balance. 🤣 did Latin at A level myself, and love a good wild card name choice but Tacitus is definitely a step too far for me...

Ahbahbahbah · 12/03/2021 20:08

@SionnachRua

Used to have a cactus named Caractus. Great cactus name.
We used to have a large cactus (4 feet tall) that was known as Caractacus the Cactacus.
PattyPan · 12/03/2021 21:43

My cactus is called George... I definitely need to push the boat out next time Grin

Ahmose · 12/03/2021 21:50

I thought most people had a fairly dim view of Tiberius though?
He was quite sadistic no?
Grin

Ahbahbahbah · 13/03/2021 07:07

Ah but a lot of that impression came from Tacitus who was very biased against him - lots of scholarly articles if you can be bothered!
