Freyja

All being well, DD1 is arriving in 6 weeks. Me and DP love the name Freya/Freyja but DP really wants to spell it Freyja rather than Freya as that's how the goddess' name is spelled.

I'm okay with it but worried she will be forever correcting people? DP is very passionate about using the correct spelling.

Would you know how to pronounce it just by reading it or will people think it's Frey-juh?

Also thoughts on the middle name Astrid?

Thank you

I’d just go with Freya. Astrid is lovely, it was on my baby name list for my daughter.

@Puffinshop , If that was aimed at me, I asked not told.

I don't like the name anyway. Forvo just has random people saying the name.

Puffinshop · 16/02/2024 12:02

@KirstenBlest Well you said 'If not, use Freya'. That's an imperative, not a question. I took that to mean you consider non-Norwegian pronunciations of Freyja to be improper. Just reminding you that other Nordic countries are available outside Scandinavia.

Something the Dane on the thread might need to remember as well. A 'typo'🙄.

Rude, especially considering the history between Denmark and Iceland.

@Puffinshop Freya has been in the top 30 names for girls in the UK for about 18 years. Using the Freyja spelling will probably mean it gets misspelt a lot.
They can spell it however they like.

@RizzleRazzle Freya/Freyja Astrid? i much prefer Astrid but the combination is fine, but check that the initials don't look/sound like a word.

Puffinshop · 16/02/2024 13:27

@KirstenBlest Yes, I know. I said very much the same ('I think maybe for a fully English child it's best to go with the most common spelling, just for practical purposes.')

You asked if they were going to pronounce it the Norwegian way, and said 'if not, use Freya', like Freyja could not properly be pronounced the same as the anglicised Freya. I was just telling you that you seem to have overlooked the fact that Freyja pronounced 'fray-ah' is a 100% legitimate Nordic pronunciation. I don't know why you can't bring yourself to acknowledge what I'm actually saying, but OK.

@Puffinshop , yawn.

Puffinshop · 16/02/2024 13:58

Lame. You could have just said oops, forgot about Iceland. I wasn't trying to be rude - it was purely conversational.
