So how popular is Mia as a baby name?

My husband and I both finally agreed that we love the name Mia. We know it's really high on popularity tables but, as a secondary school teacher, I have rarely encountered Mia in the classroom. Is it really a name that's so popular in the UK now? Will there be lots of students with the name Mia in secondary classrooms in 10+ years? Would love to know your top three favourite names too. Thanks so much everyone Smile

It's been a top 10 name since 2012, so you'll probably hear of more of them at secondary level in the next few years.

That said, its rank has gone up but it's absolute numbers have gone down a bit - because fewer and fewer people are using top ten names.

You can check regional popularity here: www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/livebirths/bulletins/babynamesenglandandwales/2019#baby-names-by-mothers-usual-area-of-residence

It’s pretty popular

FartnissEverbeans · 09/03/2021 19:47

I’m a secondary teacher and I’ve had a few Mias already.

I also know several baby Mias.

I think it’s pretty popular but maybe more so in particular regions

Ithinkhedidit · 09/03/2021 19:54

Gosh I'm amazed! I'm a secondary teacher and every second girl is called Mia in my school! It must be disproportionately popular in my region.

FelicityPike · 09/03/2021 19:55

Very!
If it’s not Mia it’s Maya.

DragonPoop · 09/03/2021 19:58

It is very popular where I live (midlands) I know tons of babies and toddlers called Mia and also there are tons of Myah’s

Thedogscollar · 09/03/2021 19:58

I'm a midwife and it's a very popular name because it's a lovely name.

EssentialHummus · 09/03/2021 20:00

I’m in London and just know the one, she’s about 5.

WatermelonKisses · 09/03/2021 20:56

I feel like it was super popular about 5-10 years ago, seemed every second baby was called Mia, bit like Isla or Sophia now. It's lovely though so just go for it!

1vandal2 · 09/03/2021 21:02

I work with three Mia's and one of them spells it Mia and says it Maya

sarah13xx · 09/03/2021 21:06

I’m a primary teacher and there’s not any at my school and I’ve never taught any. I think Mila is definitely becoming more popular with people naming babies this year where I live but haven’t heard of any Mias

NatARG · 09/03/2021 21:41

Thanks everyone! Really interesting to look at the regional differences- I've only ever taught one Mia too! Will keep thinking about it! Smile

I know one Mia and one Mya - both are about 4. And also a teenage Mia and a Maya.

But that said it’s a lovely name so I can see why. If you like it go for it. I think Mia is the nicest of all those similar names too

WildCherryBlossom · 11/03/2021 10:20

It's such a pretty name! I do know a few but not a ridiculous number. I know way more girls called Alice and Isabelle. (Also lovely names, but they always have to be knows as Alice A, Alice B etc

tigerbread20 · 11/03/2021 10:27

The only 2 babies (under 2) I know are both Mia

zigaziga · 11/03/2021 10:43

It’s not more popular now than it has been for a while - looks like there was an explosion in popularity around 2001 ish and it’s pretty much stayed there?

It should be established in secondary school age children by now. If you’re not coming across too many I’d take that as a good sign.

As people often point out, even the most popular names are still 1/100 or so.

Chilldonaldchill · 12/03/2021 08:29

I know six, all between the ages of 14 and 19. I haven't come across any younger ones.

Alwayswrongneverright · 12/03/2021 12:32

It's a nice name but there's so many spelling variations and pronunciations it may get tiresome correcting people

Howshouldibehave · 12/03/2021 12:36

There are loads around 16-20 when my elder children were born, but I have two girls called Mia in my reception class and 4 (!!) Mayas in Y1!
