Does Gwen need a longer full name?

Seriously considering Gwen for DD due in spring. Really not keen on Gwendolyn, Gwenna etc.

Any others that I might not have heard? Does she need a longer full name?

Why do you think its somehow compulsory to have a longer version of a name??!!

I'm confused.

Lilyofthevalleys · 08/03/2021 22:22

I like Gwen just as it is. Also like Gweneth.

Nell96 · 08/03/2021 22:33

Nope, Gwen is fine. I do love Gwennan and Gwenllian though. Also Guinevere.

StellaDendrite · 08/03/2021 22:36

I think Gwen is lovely and cool just as it is. It's a great name.

OverByYer · 08/03/2021 22:37

I know a few just Gwent. I prefer it to the longer versions

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 08/03/2021 22:54

While I personally have a real soft spot for Gwyneira (or the alt Gweneira spelling) and Guinevere, I second people saying Gwen doesn't need a longer version. It is one of those names that may have been more commonly used as a nn but now seem very much names in their own right - like Tess, Jack or Max (like Gwen they don't have that typically cutesy nn sound to me).

SenecaTrewe · 08/03/2021 23:41

The "gw" sound is so ugly - it needs more syllables to soften it up.

MercyBodle · 09/03/2021 08:44

Gwen is fine as it is. Cool name!

Modestandatinybitsexy · 09/03/2021 08:46

I have a Gwendolen and love that Gwen is amazing by itself. DD gets called a mixture of both

Lovingspring · 09/03/2021 08:47

I know a Gwen, it's not short for anything. Nice name OP.

MuddleMoo · 09/03/2021 09:01

Ooh I like Gwen. Just as it is is fine.

WireFan · 09/03/2021 09:40

SenecaTrewe it's a Welsh name and has the perfect number of syllables in that language so park your ignorance elsewhere.

Gwen means 'white' and 'holy'. The boys equivalent name is Gwyn.

VenusClapTrap · 09/03/2021 11:23

Fine on its own. Nice name.

DacwMamYnDwad · 09/03/2021 13:19

Gwendolyn, Gwenna - these aren't welsh. Gwendolen is but is pronounced Gwen-DOLL-enn. Gwenna is too similar to telling someone to smile so would be a PITA to live with.

Gwenllian - only if you live in the welsh-speaking part of Wales
Gwenan - fine, the -an is like the an in Nan.
Gwenno - nice, but the o is like the o in got, not like the one in go.
Gwenchi - Confused I really don't think so!
Gweneth - horrible. Gwyneth is fine
Gwenda - a bit of a granny name

Other ones could be Gwennol (Swallow), Gwenhwyfar (Guinevere), Gwenfair (Gwen+Mary), Gweneira (Gwen+snow), Gwenwynig

Gwendoline is nice, Gwen on it's own is fine but people will try to lengthen it

pumpkinmamma · 09/03/2021 13:42

Thanks everyone!

I think I was just having wobble because I read on here so often about having a “proper” name on the birth certificate, like Katherine known as Katie etc.

Gwen firmly on the shortlist!

I forgot Gwenaëlle, but it sounds better in a french accent, Gwenna-elle not Gwenna-yell Smile

westing · 09/03/2021 14:10

I know a Gwenevieve who didnt like Gwen and changed to Evie/Eve.
I think its nice to give the child a longer name so they have a little bit of choice in what they go by.

Borntohula · 09/03/2021 14:14

Just call her Gwen, what a lovely and underused name!

Not when it's made up.
minniemoocher · 09/03/2021 15:18

I love Gwendolyn

TinaYouFatLard · 09/03/2021 16:31

She needs to be Gwendoline Mary Lacey.

AirportLounge · 09/03/2021 17:44

Gwen can stand alone, I think.

Gwendoline is lovely, though.
