Thoughts on Lenny?

Short for Leonard which would have meaning for us. Or would you go with Leo? OH likes quite traditional names

I like Leonard. Pronounced Leo-nard.

I know a Lennard whose is Lenny.

Violetlavenders · 07/03/2021 11:13

I also like Leonardo.

Hailtomyteeth · 07/03/2021 11:15

Lenny. The lion. A spiv. Urgh.
Leo. Acceptable as an abbreviation for Leonard, which is pronounced 'len-'rd'.

partyatthepalace · 07/03/2021 11:16

Leonard is pronounced Lennard isn’t it?

Anyway you can still use Leo as a short form which I think is a lot nicer than Lenny. I have to say I prefer Leonardo, but if he’s called Leo on a day to day basis it doesn’t matter.

Chihuahuacat · 07/03/2021 11:17

I like Leo. Lenny has strong ‘of mice and men’ connotations to me.

GooodMythicalMorning · 07/03/2021 11:19

same @Chihuahuacat.

Violetlavenders · 07/03/2021 11:21

If you pronounce it Lennard then Lenny is the natural shortening.

Leo sounds like it's short for Leonardo or Leo-nard (pronounced like this in other languages)

Zarinea · 07/03/2021 11:22

Not keen on Lenny. PP sums it up with Spivvy.

Leo is good, though. And I think it's fine as a shortening for Leonard.

Number3BigCupOfTea · 07/03/2021 11:23

I like it for a girl but it has Of Mice And Men vibes for me.

Prefer Leo as a short form of Leonard

Oly4 · 07/03/2021 11:24

Awful, Leo is much nicer!

SK2970 · 07/03/2021 11:25

My 4 week old son is called Leonard and we call him Lenny 💙💙 so I love it!
He could have been Leo or Lenny but he is definitely a Lenny! I think Leonard can be a professional name for when he is older!

GreenClock · 07/03/2021 12:12

Leonard is super. Love it. Would not shorten, or would use Leo or Len because I agree that Lenny, cute for a baby, is a bit spivvy for an older boy/man.

lunarlife · 07/03/2021 12:59

Lenny does make me think "of mice and men" first.
It was a core English text when I was at school and every other year read it.

DaddysGirl36 · 07/03/2021 14:41

Love it! One of our name choices as just Lenny but we had a girl

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 07/03/2021 14:51

Lenny's fine as a nn. It really depends on whether you prefer a retro nn like Lenny (when you already have vintage style name in Leonard), or whether you mind a more popular name like Leo. Lenny would probably be more instinctual though since most English speakers say Leonard as "Lennerd".

HeronLanyon · 07/03/2021 14:53

Love it.
For me it would be an homage to Lenny Cohen !

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 07/03/2021 14:54

I think most younger kids will think of Lenny from the Simpsons before they think of the Steinbeck novel, so I wouldn't worry about that too much (I'm not sure whether it is still a core text for older kids?)

Farcry66 · 07/03/2021 14:55

I have a Leonard, known as Leo. That was my condition of calling him Leonard, some of his paternal family call him Lenny and I hate it, but he's of an age where he corrects them or just ignores them now. It's a family name which is why I went with it.

Enidblyton1 · 07/03/2021 14:58

I’d go with Leopold/Leo personally.
But I don’t dislike Lenny. I know quite a few boys and dogs called Leo, so Lenny would certainly be a more unusual choice around here.

Jdart · 07/03/2021 15:01

I have a lenny, hes 22 now, he really suits his name, people commented on his name in a positive way and say how they never thought of it as a first name, I absolutely love it

Munchkin08 · 07/03/2021 15:05

I know 2 young Lenny's aged 3 and 4. I like it, I also like Leo

VanillaIce · 07/03/2021 15:20

Who pronounces Leonard Leo-nard? Grin

Violetlavenders · 07/03/2021 17:01

I know a German Leonard who pronounces his name as Leo-nard. I assumed that's how it's pronounced.

Do you pronounce Leopold as Leppold Grin?

RedGoldAndGreene · 07/03/2021 17:22

@VanillaIce

Who pronounces Leonard Leo-nard? Grin
It's Leo-nard in other countries.
Daffodil29 · 07/03/2021 17:22

As other posters have said, all I can think of is Of Mice & Men!
