Unexpected name

17caterpillars1mouse · 06/03/2021 17:03

Just seen a birth announcement of a friend of a friend, a new baby girl named Keri

It was unexpected as its a name I haven't heard on a newborn before (just those born in the 80s)

What are your thoughts?

OP posts:

Wow yeah great name

So surprising and refreshing!

Actually more interesting than a "Bear" type name (which I also really like by the way)

I met a baby Kimberly and a baby Melissa recently. Loved it!

MuddleMoo · 06/03/2021 18:52

It's a great name.

MuddleMoo · 06/03/2021 18:53

Ooh I like Melissa.

But yeah OP, perhaps not the nicest thing to do to ask for judgement on it. What if we'd all said it was horrible!? (It's not, it's a great name)

havemybreakfastthen · 06/03/2021 18:56

It's a lovely name

BabloHoney · 06/03/2021 21:36

Really like Keri. I have a soft spot for names that sound a bit 1990s! Nicole, Christina, Lauren, Chloe, Jessica.. all lovely

35andThriving · 06/03/2021 21:43

I have actually suggested the name Kerry on a couple of threads recently because I like it. Smile

SleepingStandingUp · 06/03/2021 21:44

I can't believe you started a thread about my baby. I thought we were friends.

FedNlanders · 06/03/2021 21:45

I like it. My daughter also has a very 80s name. Not unusual but she is only one in school but everyone can spell it. Probably a few mums called it lol.

SleepingStandingUp · 06/03/2021 21:49

I mean, not really, I have all boys. But it's such an identifying thread, why WOULD you??

SoupDragon · 07/03/2021 00:02

@17caterpillars1mouse

No ill intentions behind the thread, as I said it was just unexpected and since many people on this forum seem to be interested in names (not all expecting currently) I was interested in what others thought as its not your run of the mill name.
Starting a thread is still a very rude thing to do.
Squeejit · 07/03/2021 00:10

I went to school with a good few Keri/Kerry/Kelly’s. I like it though. It has that late mid century cool vibe to it.

DramaAlpaca · 07/03/2021 00:55

In defence of @17caterpillars1mouse, she has been around on this board for years and often posts asking for opinions on random names that she's come across. I've never once seen her be rude or judgemental about anyone's name choices, and I'm quite sure she wouldn't have meant to offend anyone by starting this thread.

SoupDragon · 07/03/2021 09:45

I'm quite sure she wouldn't have meant to offend anyone by starting this thread.

I think it is very likely to offend her friend-of-a-friend

MindGrapes · 07/03/2021 09:49

Op you keep calling it "unexpected". What was your list of names that you did expect? Why are you so moved to post a thread about a name that wasn't one of your "expected" ones? Did the mum give a really clear indication beforehand that she would pick a certain name or type of name?

I just can't understand this thought process at being so surprised at a baby's name when there are hundreds of thousands they could choose and you aren't going to "expect" all of them!

ViciousJackdaw · 07/03/2021 23:51

Nothing wrong with Keri at all. Short and sweet and easy to pronounce. Sounds professional enough for later life (because they are never 'baby names' for long).

Firebird83 · 08/03/2021 00:32

I think it’s fine to discuss names you come across in real life. Not everyone in this board is currently expecting, some people just like talking about names.

aloeha · 08/03/2021 00:41

Keri is lovely

SmeleanorSmellstrop · 08/03/2021 08:06

Unexpected doesn't mean unpleasant, get a grip everyone. Of course you can talk about baby names on a baby names board????????

Mumsnet is so full of women being bitchy like this and thinly disguising it as being nice/moral/concerned. So tedious.

SmeleanorSmellstrop · 08/03/2021 08:09

Also I agree with this.

Some people are just interested in names.

And it's obviously unexpected because its very rare these days and not following any of the current fashions - nature, grannie chic etc. Obviously. It doesn't mean or even imply anything unpleasant.

MiddleClassProblem · 08/03/2021 10:53

I think it’s very different looking at potential names compared to a name that has just been given and not by you. It’s an incredibly personal choice and a very special time. To the have someone hear your decision and then ask for judgement on it would feel shit. They are basically asking people to write good or bad things about it. Whether the intent is there or not it is still not a nice thing to do to someone. Maybe op needs to understand this and maybe, if they are so curious, keep the explanation of it being about a friend’s baby out of it and just ask about the name, therefore making it solely about the name rather than this baby’s name.

SoupDragon · 08/03/2021 11:15

Like your post?

There is a difference between "what do you think of this name" and "friend of a friend has just used this "unexpected" name." One is general, one is personal.

NameChangedForThisFeb21 · 08/03/2021 11:20

One is general, one is personal.

Completely agree. No one would have batted an eyelid had the OP started a “what do you think of the name Keri?” thread...which she’s done before. But it’s unkind and personal to a newborn and her mum to so deliberately invite judgement on this “unexpected” name and to make an issue of it the way she has.

ImKeri · 08/03/2021 12:42

NC for this but Keri is my real name. It was very popular when I was at school but no one else ever had my spelling which I loved.

The slightly odd thing is that when people accidentally spell my name another way I don’t recognise it as my name.

Does anyone else with less common spellings of their name find that?

Eppy123 · 10/03/2021 05:36

I’m a Ceri (not Welsh!) and have had so many people unable to pronounce my name whilst growing up!

I personally wouldn’t choose the name for my child but prefer a more unusual spelling such as Ceri/Keri ... K spelling is more likely to have people able to pronounce! :)

Murtaghjames · 10/03/2021 06:05

My cousin is called Keri, she was born in 1988. I think it's a lovely name.
