Hey! I thought this would be a fun discussion to have.

We all have our own style's of names, whether it's traditional, unique, cutesy, shortened versions of long names, long versions of names.

I was just wondering what your style is. I definitely fall in the category of cutesy/short names/traditional -ish????

What kind of name category would you say you fall under! And what's your worst kind of name group! X

I tend to like nature names, Welsh names, Scottish names, short and simple names (3 or 4 letters) - quite keen on Ancient Greek names and names linked with mythology.

I tend to dislike cutesy / overly twee names, traditional / classic names, biblical names, old lady / vintage names, and overly frilly / girly names.

Though obviously there are always exceptions - and what I might view as 'cutesy ', someone else might view as classic. It's all so subjective and can be quite an emotive topic, so it's difficult to fit everyone into boxes.

Wondermule · 05/03/2021 23:18

I like traditional names for boys (George, Jack, James) and pretty flower names for girls. Current fave is Poppy.

Mumsnet will tell you all names will date and are chavvy except Charlotte and Ptolemy.

FuckyouBrennan · 05/03/2021 23:20

@amanzapanza I reckon I probably like the same names as you OP.
Mine is traditional-ish, shortened version of longer traditional names, “nice” or “pretty” names for girls.... I’ll give some examples
Billy
Archie
Polly
Emilia
Eva
Violet

My worst is made up names, I once heard a Kyran & Aisley sibset. I’m really keen on modern names either.
Examples;
Harper
Harley
Ezra
Reuben
Otis
Rafe
Seth
Logan
Myla
Aria
Unisex names I’m not keen on.
Anything hyphenated with Mai/Mae or Rae

FuckyouBrennan · 05/03/2021 23:21

@Wondermule my sons middle names are George & Jack. Both are grandparents but also fabulous names.

Lynora · 05/03/2021 23:24

I hate stuffy traditional names. Much prefer 'chavvy' by MN standards names.

DramaAlpaca · 05/03/2021 23:30

My style of names is: underused classic and/or Irish to reflect heritage, and short. I want to use their names, not a shortened version of them.

Least favourite styles: cutesy names ending in 'ie' for both boys and girls; flowery and frilly names for girls with one or two exceptions; Old Testament names for boys; 'old lady/man' names that aren't classics. Finally, I'd reserve a special place in hell for hyphenated names, especially for boys.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 05/03/2021 23:48

I generally like traditional names with a more cool/unusual/fun nn, so for example:

Alexander (nn Lex or Xan)
Nathaniel (nn Han)
Edward (nn Bear or Iolo)
James (nn Jem)
Nicholas (nn Nico or Cole)
Michael (nn Cal)

Claudia (nn Kitty or Cadi)
Teresa (nn Tree or Tess)
Madeleine (nn Della or Lainey)
Josephine (nn Effie)
Juliet (nn Ettie)
Helena (nn Nell or Leni)

Itsjustaride8w737 · 05/03/2021 23:49

I like short one syllable names.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 06/03/2021 00:02

Oh and I have too many worst groups Blush - I dislike most nicknames as given names, as well as most names ending in "ie/y" sounds (too cute for me), anything last very popular about 100 years ago (so "old man/lady"), most surnames as first names, and anything hypenated or that has suddenly become popular/trendy out of nowhere (so basically I end up disliking half of the most popular names on here/ in the charts, annoying for a name nerd!)

Guilty pleasure names are nature names and many classical/very historical names (even if they are quite unusual).

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 06/03/2021 00:12

Biblical I guess. I'm an atheist, but somehow my two DC have four very significant biblical names between them!

singlewhitefemale11 · 06/03/2021 00:14

Nature names. Trees are my Gods.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 06/03/2021 00:47

I don't really have one particular style.

Helpful.
Synchrony · 06/03/2021 01:49

I guess I'd fall under lesser-used classics, so things like Sarah. I'm not in to most granny names. Also like Greek names.

Hate boys names on girls, surnames as first names, and anything rhyming with Aiden.

A lot of them aren’t modern, Seth, Ezra, Reuben are all in the bible for example. Seth is Adam and Eve’s 3rd son, so it’s the least modern you can get really!

I’m not sure what my style is, my DD is called Aoife Mabli and my DS Will be called Tadhg Cosmin.

@Wondermule. Says you who as of yet hasn't even made any contribution to the thread, aside from to say 'Helpful'

FuckyouBrennan · 06/03/2021 07:30

@aloeha okay I’ll rephrase. Names that are currently very popular and seen to be “cool”
They’re biblical but they’re not what we could consider traditional; Edward, George etc

DoNotEatTheFreePistachioIceCre · 06/03/2021 07:47

My preference is traditional names with lots of shortening options. I don't like twee / cutesy / girly. But saying that, my dd ended up with a fairly short name, which is quite feminine! But a strong classic too.

I love out there names as well, especially nature names, but DH hates them, so we never would have used.

But twee names, or funny spellings (for no good reason, not a different spelling from another culture to which the child belongs or has links to) are not to my taste at all.

I have. Scroll up.

Drunkenmonkey · 06/03/2021 10:38

I have no idea what category I like. My tastes cover so many categories. I love Alexandra and Louisa, I think they are such classic beautiful names, but I also love the name Kai and Kaia (ocean in Hawaiian rather than Rooney)
I love Irish names like Saoirse and Cillian and Aoife, I like cute names like Herbie and Barney. I love vintage names like Pearl and Wilfred. I love American names like Cody and Kobe and I pretty much love all the nature names, loving Wren, Summer and Skye at the moment.
I even like double barrell names like Annie-Rose and names considered down-market like Chase and Kade, I think they have a cool edgy factor.

The only names I DON'T like are overused trendy names. I think that's because I'm a bit of a name nerd so love to see a variety of different names used and get bored of hearing the same ones.
A pet hate of mine is when a name becomes so popular and then lots of other names that sound the same then get popular which creates a sea of similar names for example Lila, Lyra, Isla, or Eva Evie, Elvie, Ava, just does nothing for me. Give me something substantial like a Harriet or Astrid any day.

I love it when someone chooses something different and unusual, even if it's not my taste.
Recently a friend had a Laith and another had a Ripley, I just thought how lovely and different.

Anyway essay over Grin

17caterpillars1mouse · 06/03/2021 18:14

I love puritan-esque virtue names; Patience, Prudence, Constance, Charity, Hope

I also seem to love unusual P names for girls, see the two above plus Perdita, Petra, Primrose. Petunia, Priya, Pandora

For boys I seem to like biblical names; Tobias, Nathaniel, Ezra, Isaac, Daniel, Joshua, Zebedee

Firebird83 · 08/03/2021 00:23

I like traditional names. Ones that wouldn’t be out of place in 1890 or 1990, like Samuel, George, Elizabeth, Louisa etc.

I dislike trendy, of the moment names like Myla or Jaxon.

Caszekey · 08/03/2021 00:24

Biblical / religious

Gideon
Ezekiel
Xavier
Castiel
Balthazar

MadamMiddle · 09/03/2021 14:15

I don't have a particular style, I like all kinds of names but I've learnt I really like surnames as first names! Holden, Harrison, Jackson, Harrison, Carter etc altho wouldn't use them personally.
I don't like what I see as 'old fashioned names', things like Ronnie, Stanley, William, Beatrice, Dorothy, Astrid etc

DragonPoop · 09/03/2021 14:51

My husband is into traditional / more common names. For example William, Harrison, Henry, Thomas, George.

I like more unusual literary names for boys and slightly whimsical/ nature/hippy/boho/fairy type names for girls. For example- Lysander, Caspian, Emrys, Faye, Maeve, Silver, Autumn, Juliet, Lara, Seren, Dahlia, Cordelia, Meadow.
