Anyone Else Put Off by a Name Because of Their Accent?

I really like one name in particular but after hearing a few friends and family members repeat it, it's put me off! The way I pronounce it sounds softer but, in the area I live, some people have a really thick accent and the name just doesn't sound as nice!

Anyone else been put off by a name due to pronunciation?

Friend with a broad Scottish accent was considering Pearl for a girl, I genuinely though she was saying Peril and reacted in horror Grin Reverse came when I was considering Seth, with my accent she thought I was saying 'Sith' and couldn't understand why I thought that was a good name. Neither of our children is named Peril or Sith.

I would find it hard to call someone Julia or similar, just because of the Glaswegian ‘Joow-ya’ from DH’s cousins.

The L with an almost W annoys me. Didn’t stop me using it, though. I couldn’t have had a strong T sound to hear it dropped constantly!

The th-fronting in my spouse's accent, so many lovely names with th that he couldn't hear the difference in how we were saying it.

I'm just waiting for somebody down south with twins called Pearl and Beryl to move to Scotland and then have everybody wondering why they gave both of their children the same name!

I love Alexander but we say it with a short ‘a’ and here people say it like Alexaaaahhhhnder. Might use it as a middle name instead.

I pronounce Carl with two syllables, almost like Carol, but with out the O sound. In the local accent it has one. Th becomes F, and T does not exist.

somuchcoffeeneeded · 06/03/2021 03:21

I’m having this problem with DH and I’s families having very different accents!

AtLeastThreeDrinks · 06/03/2021 10:19

We like Harry (one of the few names we agree on) but ‘alf the family would drop the H!

Feo and Fea
Evva
Ilry (Hilary)
Natlee

Sapphira ( very glam) actually pronounced Sfire

Howarebabiesmade · 06/03/2021 11:20

Jennifer, Samantha become Jennifaa and Samanfaa in London and smaanfur in Norfolk.

SenecaTrewe · 06/03/2021 11:25

I wish I'd thought about the Scouse pronunciation of Naomi before I called my DD it. Round here it's Nigh-o-mee, not Nay-o-mee as we say it.

Derrymum123 · 06/03/2021 11:33

I know an Anais but parents say it Ann-ay-si. Makes me cringe.

Marcipex · 06/03/2021 11:44

As in Pearl and Peril, I know a Tal, pronounced Towel.

merryhouse · 06/03/2021 11:52

We discounted Paul immediately because H's family is from East London / Essex (H still doesn't believe that he misses the l off hospital)

Paow is probably the closest I can get.

HerNameIsY0shimi · 06/03/2021 12:08

Yes! I knew a Pauw too. Also from Essex.

ICanTuckMyBoobsInMyPockets · 06/03/2021 12:15

I really liked Ryan but round here it's pronounced Ry-un and DHs family would say 'Rine' which is just absolutely awful.

soundsystem · 06/03/2021 12:24

So, so many.

Lottie, because of the glottal stop (she has Charlotte as a middle name)

Margaret, because close members of my family would pronounce it as Mag-rit

Fiadh, because we live somewhere where Th becomes F, so people would assume we were saying Thea

One of my daughters is called Jean, which we thought would be really easy for everyone. Every single health visitor/medical, etc appointment we went to (pre-COVID) they called it out like the French boys name. Can't win!

Does he work in sauws? Grin

HerNameIsY0shimi · 06/03/2021 15:40

He is (was) a scaffolder!
