Daphne?

Hey! So I have always had a huge love for the name Daphne.. I think it's just gorgeous. Classy whilst also still being slightly unique. Then the show Bridgerton came out and since then I feel like everyone is either loving or hating this name! What are your opinions? X

It's nice. The TV thing may make it suddenly more popular for other new babies the same age as yours?

DramaAlpaca · 03/03/2021 01:12

I adore it, and have done since long before Bridgerton.

Ellbell24 · 03/03/2021 01:13

@Ellmau this is my exact worry! I'm not going to lie but I do tend to like names that aren't very popular but not were they sound stupid. And suddenly I've heard lots of other mums to be say they like the name Daphne! I also like Penelope too but that is also from bridgerton! 🤣

I loved Ada before Peaky Blinders happened.. if you like Daphne, just go for it! If people want to comment you can find most names as TV/Film characters x

It's also not a cultural phenomenon like Game of Thrones and Daphne is a real, commonly-known name. I don't think even today people would automatically think 'parents must be Bridgerton fans' in the same way you would if a baby was called Arya or 'parents must be Philip Pullman fans' with a baby Lyra.

BritInAus · 03/03/2021 02:03

It's a lovely name. It's not like Elsa after Frozen came out or anything. Definitely use it!

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 03/03/2021 02:50

Dislike it, sorry - but then I'm also not keen on Penelope either (I dislike the strong "ee" sounds at the end of both names, it sounds slightly whiny to me). I'm also not keen on the nn "Daf" - too much like daft.

But not everyone would associate Daphne with Bridgerton - there have been plenty of other Daphne's in pop culture. It's a perfectly useable name and while it may become a bit more popular, I can't see there being a huge surge in use (not the same way Ada did from Peaky Blinders - that benefitted from it's similarity to popular Ava too).

Great name

I wouldn't assume a Bridgeton connection

ParisJeTAime · 03/03/2021 09:25

I know two little Daphnes! They are 5/6. I really like it. It isn't mega unusual if that's what you're looking for, but that wouldn't put me off.

crabette · 03/03/2021 11:28

I love Daphne. Still think the association will be more Scooby Doo than Bridgerton, don't think either are an issue though!

RuthW · 03/03/2021 12:18

Love it

Starsandglitter · 03/03/2021 12:23

I don’t think the Bridgeton connection is an issue at all but it’s popularity does seem to be on a steep rise if that’s an issue for you. Although only 100 odd girls named Daphne in 2019 so still pretty uncommon. I think it’s lovely. I’m not keen on Penelope or penny but that’s just personal preference. X

partyatthepalace · 03/03/2021 12:38

I find it a bit wet, but if I liked it I wouldn’t let Bridgeton put me off

Nell96 · 03/03/2021 15:31

I like it, beautiful and underused. It was on my list, but I live near Manchester, where the pronunciation would sound awful - like Daphne Moon in Frasier ...

Firebird83 · 04/03/2021 20:05

It’s lovely. It is going to get more popular though. Not just because of Bridgerton, but because it’s in that group of old fashioned names that are sounding fresh again - Daphne, Margot, Ada, Iris etc.
