What do you think of Glen for a boy ?....going with a Scottish surname ...Mc...It was my grandfather’s name. Wondering if it’s too old fashioned?.

Not for me but, but that doesn't mean it's not for you. One of my dc has a family middle name because it's old fashioned (in the wrong way) however it was important to me to have it in their. They actually quite like the family connection but are grateful that it's not their first name.

Yes middle name could be the way to go ...

Well, I am not wild about it - and there are so many lovely Scottish boys' names (and yes it is old fashioned) - so I'd be inclined to make it a middle name.

I quite like Glen. It's pretty underused these days I believe. It's masculine and would make a refreshing change from the more cutsey-sounding names like Freddie, Alfie, Archie etc IMO.

RickiTarr · 28/02/2021 18:03

I like it. Simple, lovely sounding name, that conjures attractive imagery.

AmySosa · 28/02/2021 18:04

Oh I love Glen.

It sounds like a bell ringing, in a good way. Like a chime.

Raggeo · 28/02/2021 18:06

I think it's a lovely name. Nature names seem popular at the moment so Glen could be a take on that but without being a common name.

HairyChin · 28/02/2021 18:08

Not for me.

Nice enough though

Lots of different viewpoints. Thank you all ... food for thought. Just joined Mumsnet today !

It’s nice :)

Nice name and I don’t feel it’s old fashioned , just not been used much lately so maybe you’ll start a new trend.

Ludo19 · 28/02/2021 19:05

I knew a Glen and he was a lovely man so I guess I'm biased. I love the name

GreenHairThingy · 28/02/2021 19:13

I think it's quite nice. Shouldn't it be Glenn though? (I have no idea BTW, I've only seen it spelled with 2 n's)

I've a relative just named their baby after their grandparent - Ronald. I love it, it's not one of the more common older names so he won't be surrounded by other Ronald/Ron's/Ronnies in class.

ZaZathecat · 28/02/2021 19:26

I like it. Definitely underused and has a nice ring about it.

Ianrankinfan · 28/02/2021 19:56

Yes sometimes it’s spelled Glenn

I think Glen is very useable, even in the first name spot. Because it has nature vibes and wasn't really ever that popular, it only feels slightly 50's/60's to me (not very dated the way that some similar one syllable names like Clive or Keith do). It would be lovely to honour your Grandad too.
