It’s pretty, I don’t think it’s popular, I’ve not heard it for a while. The only Cynthias it reminds me of is Cynthia Nixon and Angelicas doll Cynthia from the Rug Rats.

Cotswoldmama · 18/02/2021 21:37

I too immediately thought of the Cynthia doll from rugrats!

Lobsterquadrille2 · 18/02/2021 21:39

I know one, who is known as Cindy and is Canadian. I automatically associate the name with Cynthia Payne.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 18/02/2021 21:42

I don’t know any Cynthias. Not a name I would choose.

Scarby9 · 18/02/2021 21:47

I always think of it as a 'thin' name. I think it is the sound. It doesn't sound round, deep or warm. Not my cup of tea.

Bluesername · 18/02/2021 22:09

The only Cynthia I've met is a retired lady. It's quite a nice name and fits with the retro style in the same way as Thea, Dorothea, Lucinda etc. It also reminds me of Cynthia Lennon so has quite a cool 50s and 60s vibe. I reckon it's one to watch.

partyatthepalace · 18/02/2021 22:55

It’s not popular right now, was a 50s and 60s name I think. Makes me think of Madam Cyn and Sindy dolls... which is probably why I don’t like it, it makes me think of limited 1950s girlhood, also a tough one if she has a lisp.

Melissa, Belinda and Natasha have a similar feel to me, but I like them a bit more. Jessica, Cassia, Rosanna, Serena, Adela, Francesca, Marina are also very feminine, but more distinguished.

No, it's not popular right now and probably won't make a comeback for a while because it was last popular in the 50's/60's (so feels like more of a "Mum" name than a retro/vintage Great-Grandmother one).

I think Cynthia has a beautiful, poetic sound and a lovely meaning - but if you do decide to use it, I'd try to encourage the Thea/Thia nn, rather than Cindy (cutesy and dated).

Similar style names to me would be Diana and Sylvia (both of which I can see making a comeback soon) or the less well -used Althea, Celia and Selena (which because they weren't popular never really dated).

Edenember · 19/02/2021 02:32

I’m really not keen, and on paper I should like it really as my current form is quite stuffy, heritage names, this is in quite a similar vein to some on my list. I just don’t. I think it might be the lack of any strong/long vowel sounds. I concur with another pp about ‘thinness’ and the above is the only way I can think to quantify why I feel that.

MorriseysGladioli · 19/02/2021 02:36

I think I prefer Sylvia, which someone upthread suggested.

SmeleanorSmellstrop · 19/02/2021 04:18

Scary rugrats doll here too! Sorry!

ILoveStickers · 19/02/2021 07:08

Latin poetry.

Also I know a Cinzia, which is the Italian version, and that's an awesome name.

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 19/02/2021 08:26

I've never met one before in my life! So not popular.

Personally, I don't love it...

MonochromeMinnie · 19/02/2021 08:30

In which country was it popular in the 50s/60s? Certainly not the UK. I know 2 Cynthia's, both in their late 80s. I really don't like the name.

MagicSummer · 19/02/2021 08:37

Is it a new thing to always be thinking of a nickname before choosing a first name? To my mind. nicknames evolve once you have chosen the full name! I think Cynthia is pretty and a bit different.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 19/02/2021 08:48

@MagicSummer

Some nicknames do evolve but some people automatically go to and no matter how many times you say, some people will shorten it to what they like. You have to see if you like the nicknames too.

MimiDaisy11 · 19/02/2021 11:07

I like it and haven't met any. I also think Cindy is a cute name for a child but they can use Cynthia when older.

Fascinationends · 19/02/2021 11:11

I really don't like it. Some names were not good last time round. Additionally, when I was a teenager there was a woman called Cynthia Payne I believe who ran a brothel and this was Big News for a long time in the press due to her MP connections. Clearly your dc won't know that, but you did ask!

SeanChailleach · 19/02/2021 12:20

Horrible spelling. A bit like a rude Anglo Saxon word? File with Cnut.

DulciUke · 19/02/2021 13:09

I think that it is a pretty name. Like a poster above, I associate it with Cynthia Lennon.

RubysArms · 19/02/2021 14:36

The first Cynthia that springs to mind is the madam, Cynthia Payne.

It's a name that gives me very aloof vibes. No idea why.

Grapesoda7 · 19/02/2021 14:51

I'm not keen on Cynthia. It makes me think of a woman like Hyacinth Bucket.

Imissthegym · 19/02/2021 14:55

I like it. It was my grandmas name, born in the 1920s. She had sisters called Cecelia and Ruby. I like Ruby but v. popular in recent years Cynthia and Cecelia are due a resurgence!
