What are your thoughts on the name Llewellyn? I think I'd want him to be Llewellyn and not a nickname

I like it.

GreenClock · 17/02/2021 00:13

I like it. I was at uni with a lovely one who went by the nickname Welly - you wouldn’t like this I know

todolistobsessed · 17/02/2021 00:58

@GreenClock I had never actually considered Welly. I went to school with an Emmanuel who went by Welly and I loved it

I like it, but by the time he's a teen he most likely would be using some sort of nn (Lew, Wyn or something), so make sure you are OK with the likely possibilities.

GalesThisMorning · 17/02/2021 07:18

I like it. We considered it for DS but non Welsh family members really struggled with the pronunciation. Anything with Ll or Dd is always going to be hard I think

lockdownbreakdown · 17/02/2021 07:23

Outside of Wales he will be called Lou or loowellyn. It will be a pain correcting everyone who cant pronounce it. If you live in Wales it's a big standard boys name and a very nice one too.

crumptrump · 17/02/2021 07:31

How is it pronounced? I would have said ‘loo-well- in’ but am not welsh

Passthecake30 · 17/02/2021 07:32

How is is pronounced as, like lockdown above suggests, I’d pronounce it Louwellin. If it’s a common name where you live, and everyone knows how to say for it, go for it.

zigaziga · 17/02/2021 08:07

I like it.

Yes it will be pronounced as Loo- in most of England but I don’t see that as a massive issue (?). I also don’t see the Anglicised pronunciation as too bad - it’s still a standardised way of pronouncing and everyone still knows the name. It’s not like it’s a name a lot of people have never seen before that 100 different people will pronounce 100 different ways. It will be sad incorrectly one way only.

Twickerhun · 17/02/2021 08:09

I like it but I wouldn’t want the pronunciation to be massacred!

HelloDulling · 17/02/2021 08:11

He would be called Llew/Lou, particularly in Wales, where everyone has their name shortened!

NoGoodPunsLeft · 17/02/2021 08:19

Did anyone else think of Laurence Llewellyn Bowen?!

I like it and think Welly would be a cute nickname for a little boy

emmathedilemma · 17/02/2021 10:31

Yes I did @NoGoodPunsLeft! (and not in a good way)

jenniferjamesandbarryboo · 17/02/2021 10:34

How is it pronounced (as I'd assume "Lou-well in)

Beetlewing · 17/02/2021 10:43

Love it. Are you Welsh?

Chilldonaldchill · 17/02/2021 10:43

I love it!

Sboncen · 17/02/2021 10:52

If you are welsh, spell it Llywelyn (or Llewelyn).

Did anyone else think of Laurence Llewellyn Bowen?!
Yes, and not in a good way.

As a pp said, it will be Llew or Lou.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 17/02/2021 10:57

It's an 'e' as in egg sound after the Ll not an ou.
If shortened to Llew that means lion, which is cute.

1starwars2 · 17/02/2021 11:06

Yes if Welsh and living in Wales, otherwise I would say no...
I am Welsh not living in Wales.

FreezerBird · 17/02/2021 11:13

I'm pretty sure it's a single L at the end.

I know two, one Llew and one Welly.

Also if you're in Wales and he goes to Welsh medium school he'll be taught (correctly) that his initial is Ll, rather than L, which is a tiny issue but has caused inordinate confusion in the English relatives of some Welsh children I know!

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 17/02/2021 11:19

I really like it but I also think it's one of those names that feels quite strongly Welsh (and is fairly uncommon), so you could occasionally get people curious about why you chose the name if that would bother you? (assuming you don't live in Wales/have an obvious Welsh surname!).

It's also fairly likely it'll get shortened to Llew by his friends once at school (unless he insists otherwise) so again you'd have to be able to stand the nickname, even if you don't use it at home.

BallsToYouSue · 17/02/2021 11:45

I quite like it. But I think if you are in England, it will be pronounced wrong. And I think it may end up being shortened wherever you are, as it is three syllables.

CaffiSaliMali · 17/02/2021 14:02

I think it will be mispronounced a lot if you live outside Wales - people will pronounce it with an 'L' at the start, instead of a 'Ll'. He'd end up being 'Lou ell in' instead of Llew ell in. Bear in mind whether or not this would bother you - my Mam's a native Welsh speaker and she failed to predict the (very obvious) way my name would be mispronounced in England (where we live) and the mispronouncuation really winds her up.

For those who asked, you can hear the pronunciation here: www.bbc.co.uk/wales/livinginwales/sites/howdoisay/names/index.shtml?ll

KirstenBlest · 17/02/2021 14:09

Llewellyn is an anglicised version. As pp, it should be Llewelyn or Llywelyn, and it only has one L in it. The first letter is LL not L.
