All from my era, and all names I love.
Which of these (if any) do you think are due a revival?
Also do you know any under 10's with any of these names?

Catherine (my favourite spelling)
Caroline (love the nn Carrie or Callie)
Emma (always wanted to be called this as a child)
Victoria (although dislike Vicky and Tori)
Rebecca (I'm ok with Becky)
Claire/ Clare (unsure which spelling I prefer)

I particularly love the name Victoria, don’t like Vicky but the Victorias I’ve known have been Tors and Toris which are quite nice.

To me, Catherine is a very classic name and is exempt from the 100 year rule and is acceptable therefore in any generation and will generally go through quite a few peaks and troughs in 100 years. I wouldn’t feel like naming a baby Catherine now would be particularly 80s. I love the name Kitty, full name Catherine.

Rachel and Rebecca I also like a lot and I think are classic also, but slightly less than Catherine, so probably not quite as likely to become popular again just yet. Victoria I would lump in with Rachel and Rebecca in this way.

I see Hannah suggested upthread - it seems to be very common among young people currently.

Is nobody called Mary anymore? Such a lovely, warm, cosy name. Never met a nasty Mary.

BallsToYouSue · 16/02/2021 21:26

I like Mary too! Though think in some areas, it is slang for vulva, so there's that. I'd still use it, as it doesn't have that meaning where I live. But maybe I'd hyphenate so she has the option to choose the other half if necessary!

Well Fanny must be due a comeback?

Grin

Fanny must be short for something, which never gets shortened to Fanny anymore? I know a Franny who is really Frances. She is amazing and hates the name Frances with an absolute vengeance!

borntobequiet · 16/02/2021 21:40

Rosemary, Veronica.

WorriedMillie · 16/02/2021 21:40

DD (7) has a Helen in her class, I really like it

borntobequiet · 16/02/2021 21:40

And Vanessa.

Onlinedilema · 16/02/2021 21:41

I think they are all nice names. I know a little Emma. I wanted to be called Claire when I was at school with one. I prefer this spelling or even Clair although it gets a lot of hate on here. I've always liked Victoria too.

Disfordarkchocolate · 16/02/2021 21:42

Jacqueline - I think it's a beautiful name.

1manwenttomow · 16/02/2021 21:52

I quite like Cheryl, Rita, Melody, Hayley and Prescilla, I'm not sure Prescilla was ever particularly main stream though.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 16/02/2021 21:55

Catherine, Caroline, Emma, Victoria, Rebecca, Claire/ Clare

I'd consider these fairly classic OP and very useable , some of them are so well used historically in literature or by royalty imo it means they'll never really go away - just have more trendy nn's for them instead: Kit/Kitty/Cate rather than Cathy/Katie, Callie/Caro rather than Carrie, Vita instead of Vicky/Tori, Reba instead of Becky .

I'd love to see a comeback for a vintage name like Wilhelmina; it looks harsh and a mouthful, but when said aloud just sounds like "Willa - Mina" - 2 modern sounding names in 1 that would make great nicknames.

Oh and I agree with a pp about Mary - it should have made a comeback by now. Great namesakes, lots of nn's, has the popular "ee" ending sound.... I had no idea it was slang for a vulva though!

doctorhamster · 16/02/2021 22:01

My 10 year old has a Mary, a Catherine and a Rebecca in her class at school. I really like Rebecca but I don't like Becky or Becca.

pineappletulip · 16/02/2021 22:16

Wendy, Deborah, Beverley, Maureen, Jennifer, Angela, Michelle, Joanne, Jolene, Diana, Elaine, Janet (love Jackson), Danielle, Sarah, Sharon, Jane, Mary, Heidi, Helen, Patricia, Linda, Alison, Beryl.

pineappletulip · 16/02/2021 22:18

What about boy names?

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 16/02/2021 22:24

My names on here Clare. I hate despise detest it. Ive never forgiven my parents for calling me it. I hate the fact that there's no friendly shortening.
OTOH I think I'd quite like it if it wasn't my name.

I'd say Catherine and Victoria are more classics. I certainly wouldn't be surprised to meet a baby Catherine or Victoria.

I'll add
Jane
Angela
Joanne
Lindsey
Michelle
Andrea
Lisa
Nicola.
Hayley
Natalie.
Sharon

I like all the names mentioned on this thread , I also have one of the names, and family members with others. They sound very refreshing. Laura is lovely. Juliet. Sarah. Deborah. Caroline. Catherine. Rebecca... all of them !
I am imagining them together at a party.

SirVixofVixHall · 17/02/2021 00:19

Jennifer is one of those names that seems to only belong to lovely girls and women, i know a wonderful Jennie. It is a gentle name somehow.

haliborange0verdose · 17/02/2021 00:28

I was born mid 70s but my somewhat older mum gave me a name from the 50s!! How I longed to have a more fashionable name, all my school mates had names like Sarah, Rachel, Rebecca, Alex, Vicky, Emma, Claire, which are all lovely timeless names that deserve a comeback!

WhistlersandJugglers · 17/02/2021 00:32

I considered (but didn't pick) Caroline and Helen. I think they're lovely. I also like Stella, Rebecca, Alison and Suzanne.
This thread is like the Paul Heaton song-was it Jennifer, Alison, Phillipa, Sue?
