Which one would you choose as a first name? (Baby will have mixed, Indian & British heritage).

Celina

VenusClapTrap · 15/02/2021 09:31

I prefer Celine to Celina, but it’s better than Ellora.

Bluesername · 15/02/2021 09:34

Ellie's

Bluesername · 15/02/2021 09:35

Spellcheck fail! I meant Ellora

Same4Walls · 15/02/2021 09:39

Celina. Ellora will most likely be shortened to El or Ellie of which she would be 1 or many within her class. It's also got much more scope for being misheard or mispelt as Eleanor.

Julianamechange · 15/02/2021 09:44

Ellora.

YouAreYourBestThing · 15/02/2021 09:46

Erm...neither 🙈 Sorry OP, I don't hate them, but I don't like them either 🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️

Are you absolutely set on one of these? There are so many beautiful names to choose from!

StressedTired · 15/02/2021 09:52

Ellora! I love this name so much after I visited the amazing Ellora caves in India.

Newyork88 · 15/02/2021 10:00

@YouAreYourBestThing I’m struggling to find names that can be both Indian and work well in the UK/ internationally! So far we have agreed on Celina, Maya, Rhea, Ellora.. Haven’t seen any other Indian/English names on name websites which work but im open to other options! Most names are either too difficult to pronounce because they have very strong Hindi sounds or they are English and don’t highlight the culture enough.

@StressedTired So lucky that you got to see them! Do you think it’s weird to name DD after the caves if DH & I have never been there?

Ellora sounds a lot like the filler word allora Italians use

VenusClapTrap · 15/02/2021 10:06

It is a bit, yes.

TheVanguardSix · 15/02/2021 10:22

I LOVE the name Rhea on your list.
What about the name Anushka?

No, not at all! It's such a beautiful and spiritual place, I really recommend visiting if you ever have the opportunity. But aside from that the name itself is beautiful in its own right, and has the connection to a spiritual place whether or not you have been there.

To this I would say don't be afraid to chose something more Indian. On this site people will say it's too difficult to pronounce, it will be misspelled, it will be shortened, etc, but in real life people will make the effort to pronounce and spell a name properly.

Other Indian names I love, maybe you will, are Anagha, Anisha, Sriya. (Disclaimer - I am not Indian but have visited and explored India a lot and love the country!)

35andThriving · 15/02/2021 10:27

Celina definitely. I think it is a great name.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 15/02/2021 10:45

Celina is a beautiful name. I've only ever seen it spelt as Selina before but think it's lovely either way.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 15/02/2021 11:17

Do you like Serena? It's very similar to the lovely Celina but without the spelling issues - I know of couple of Indian/mixed heritage Serena's. Ellora is beautiful too and of your 2 choices would be the one I'd choose (it's such a rare name that she'd have to spell it anyway so you might as well go for it!). Make sure you like the nn Ellie/Ella though as it will likely be shortened to that if you are in the UK.

Twickerhun · 15/02/2021 12:57

Maya, Asha or Jyoti were top of our list for similar reasons.

YouAreYourBestThing · 15/02/2021 13:02

Rhea is lovely OP!

Like a previous poster said, Ellora sounds so much like 'allora' (which I can never hear without much comedic affect after watching Master of None on Netflix 🤣)

Honeyroar · 15/02/2021 13:06

I’ve never heard of either name. I quite like Ellora if it’s an actual indian place. Most people won’t know the Italian word allora anyway. I have an Italian degree and didn’t think of allora when I read the post.

JemimaTiggywinkle · 15/02/2021 13:17

I like Celina

partyatthepalace · 15/02/2021 13:41

Both really lovely.

I slightly prefer Ellora - but really both are lovely.

(I think Allora is a v obscure reference and really wouldn't worry about it)

It really isn't an obscure reference if you speak Italian, or visit Italy. You will hear it literally everywhere!!
EverythingsComingUpRoses · 15/02/2021 16:31

I know an Ellora -shortens it to Lori

You can't control shortened versions of names being used once children get their own friendship groups anyway

I like Ellora, I think it's very pretty

SmeleanorSmellstrop · 15/02/2021 16:53

Celina is lovely
