Merrily

I'm not having any more children but I was randomly thinking that this would be such a sweet name (nn Merry). Maybe more of a fantasy name you'd never really use in real life but I love how it sounds with an ordinary surname. Like some kind of heroine!

Em no Meri Leigh might might work though

partyatthepalace · 14/02/2021 15:25

Quite a burden to place on a person.

The only Joy I knew was a misery guts so everyone found her name hilarious. Merry short for Meredith or whatever is Ok becos she can always dump the nn

DurhamDurham · 14/02/2021 15:26

Sounds like a hobbit's name, Meredith with Merry for short is acceptable Grin

Marvelina · 14/02/2021 15:30

Yes, Meredith is much more sensible. It's definitely more of a fantasy name!

Merrily is a bit brave for a RL child I think - she may come to hate the song "Merrily we roll along" and Christmas with the "Merrily on high" jokes. A shame because objectively it does sound very pretty!

I agree with pp - Meredith or Meriel (nn Merry) would be safer.

FuckingFabulous · 14/02/2021 15:32

Imagine if she goes to a CofE school and at Christmas, the kids discover Ding Dong, Merrily On High for the first time. They don't even need to be inventive.

I've known 3 Joy's in my lifetime, and all 3 were horrible misery guts. Ironic, isn't it?

MillyMinamino · 14/02/2021 15:34

She would hate the song 'Row Row Row The Boat'

elephantoverthehill · 14/02/2021 15:35

I teach a Merryn, her family call her Merry. I think it works quite well.

Marvelina · 14/02/2021 15:37

I love Merryn

Yes I see what you mean OP. I am picturing it on a Narnia style character with a fluffy snow speckled tail, emerald green eyes and emerald green coat. I am fond of Meriel, the Cornish Merryn and adore Meryl Streep but I don't think I could call a child Merry and am unenthusiastic about virtue names.

Firebird83 · 15/02/2021 00:41

I know a Meridy, which I think I prefer to Merrily.

Scarby9 · 15/02/2021 00:43

I know a 17 year old Merrily. She suits it.

Whineandwine · 15/02/2021 00:49

I have a Merryn. She hates Merry for short (I love it!). Being called Merry ironically makes her scowl Grin

LittleRa · 15/02/2021 00:52

I know someone called Meriel. Then you can use nickname Merry. Merrily is an adverb, which is strange for a name.

Poppins2016 · 15/02/2021 01:01

It sounds pretty... but I'm not a fan of virtue names, what if the child doesn't live up to their name? I loved the name Meredith (n.n. Merry/Merrie) when I was last pregnant but went off it when I realised a child with that name would be forever being told to "smile".

Bluesername · 15/02/2021 07:11

Reminds me of Truly Scrumptious in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

TH22 · 15/02/2021 07:33

Merrily Merrily Merrily Merrily,
Life is but a dream.

BallsToYouSue · 15/02/2021 08:31

Love Merryn! Merrily wouldn't work for me. It's an adverb (I think...tries to remember English lessons 😂). Doesn't work as a name, even for a pet imo. Merry would be cute for a pet or short for Merryn.

IveMadeAHugeMistake · 15/02/2021 08:43

I knew a Merrigan when I was little, always liked her name!

emmathedilemma · 15/02/2021 09:30

Merryn is lovely, much prettier than Meredith. Merrily is asking for a lifetime of mocking.

spiderlight · 15/02/2021 13:50

I know a little Merrilyn, always known as Merry. That feels more like a proper name.

EuphieKat · 15/02/2021 14:16

Merryn is nice; what about Meryl instead?

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 15/02/2021 16:50

She would hate the song 'Row Row Row The Boat'

And those of us of a certain age would be singing "Merrily we roll along" in their heads, every time they hear the name mentioned.
