Rebecca

I know it uses to be very popular but it's barely uses now (200ish last year) yet it doesn't feel dated to me. I love the full name so much, less keen on Becky / Becca though don't hate them.

What are your thoughts?

I once met a Dutch or Danish Rebekah who was called Rebbie. (Don't know how it was spelt actually as met her on holiday as a teenager in Greece). Always remembered it though as I thought it was way cooler than our English Becky.

fairydustandpixies · 14/02/2021 03:35

My 18yr old niece is a Rebecca and it's never been shortened by our family.

CoffeeAndCaramel · 14/02/2021 04:10

Really awful and dated. Sorry but I can't stand it 😬

PlainJane1000 · 14/02/2021 05:48

@ethelredonagoodday another Rebekah here who gets called Rachel! I always wondered if I just looked like a Rachel, but clearly it's a thing!! I get called Rebekah, I have never been called Becky, sometimes I get Bec or Bex. I travel a lot and I love that wherever I go people recognise the name, it is very internationally understood, its known but no longer common. I would definitely consider it for a child now, I don't think it's a name that dates.

RuthW · 14/02/2021 10:01

It's ok. My friend had always been known as Reb.

ApolloandDaphne · 14/02/2021 10:03

My DD is a Rebecca. She is 23. She goes by Becca mostly. If you call her Becky she won't answer!

Fagey · 14/02/2021 10:05

It's lovely.

Rebecca with Ruby for short is popular in my family for a few generations.

KirstenBlest · 14/02/2021 10:06

Classic but I'm not too keen as I know far too many of them. Becky, Beck, Bex, Becca . Most of them are nice though.

morekidsthanhands · 14/02/2021 10:15

I'm a Rebecca too but I go by Becky (though I had never thought of it as a younger version of Karen before this thread 😅). My only downside to the name is that in school there were 4 other beckys in my class alone but of course that wouldn't be a problem now.

mumandcub · 15/02/2021 07:34

I’m a Rebecca and go by Becca just because no one can be bothered to say the full name. Shortening of this name is to be expected. The only one I say no to is Becky - I even correct those that assume it’s ok to shorten it to that!!

rc22 · 15/02/2021 15:45

It's my middle name and I wish my parents had picked it as my first name. I considered starting to use it when I was a teenager. I really like it.

Synchrony · 15/02/2021 17:13

I know many Rebeccas and really like the name. However, all but one of the Rebeccas I know lost the fight to avoid the shortened forms. So I personally wouldn't use it unless there is also a short form you're ok with.

If it's any consolation to the Rebeccas-who-get-called-Rachel out there, I also know a Rachel who is frequently called Rebecca. It seems to work both ways! Maybe because Rebecca and Rachel were Aunt/neice and also mother and daughter-in law in the Bible?

That's good to know @Synchrony! 🤣 It's just so odd, I even get emails sent to my actual email address [email protected] which open, Hi Rachel! 🤦🏼‍♀️🤣

It must be a thing though as one of the episodes of inside number 9 had a character who it happened to!

ImInStealthMode · 15/02/2021 22:26

I'm a Rebecca. I was Becky when I was little (and still am to some older family and some people at work), but most family, friends and some colleagues now call me Bex as it's the NN I preferred as I got older.

In truth I actually prefer Becca now but it's a bit late to insist on a change at 37? Grin

ImInStealthMode · 15/02/2021 22:28

Ps.. I don't ever remember getting called Rachel, but I do get called Debbie bizarrely often.

I'd understand if it were people who knew me as it's my Mum's name, but it's mostly clients and acquaintances who'd have no way of knowing that HmmConfused

bruffin · 15/02/2021 22:30

I have Rebecca, she is known as Becky or Bex but also know 2 that are only called Rebecca.

ChimpyChops · 15/02/2021 22:31

My absolute favourite!

whiteroseredrose · 15/02/2021 22:34

I love it. Its DD's middle name, named after my great grandmother.

Moonface123 · 15/02/2021 22:36

It is a lovely name, very underrated.

sproutsandparsnips · 15/02/2021 22:40

I really like it - if I'd had a girl would have been second choice! Also Rebekah.

Tatum1234 · 15/02/2021 22:40

It’s quite boring sorry.

Onlinedilema · 15/02/2021 22:43

Great name. I worked with a Rebecca and I sometimes called her Rachel by mistake, I have no idea why.

Littlesilverbird · 15/02/2021 22:46

I'm in the minority but I don't like it. It sounds a bit like an adjective for someone who 're-becks' things.

Stressedmummyof4 · 15/02/2021 22:49

I have a Rebecca, I loved and still do love the name. We don't shorten it at all, she probably does by friends at school but I don't like any of the shortened versions.

manicinsomniac · 16/02/2021 01:47

I'm another Rebecca who gets called Rachel a lot and also Ruth - 3 Biblical R names popular in the 80s, I guess!

I really like it but wouldn't have used it in the 80s and 90 due to popularity. I was often in situations where we have to have Rebecca, Becca, Becky and Bex and sometimes go to initials too.

I'm not keen on Becky but I think that's mostly because of how universally and strongly hated it seems to be on mumsnet. I have always been Becky to family but Rebecca everywhere else. I don't see my family that often so I no longer see myself as a Becky and have started to hate it myself. A few people call me Becs which I don't mind too much but I prefer to be called Rebecca.

I only know 2 Rebeccas under 13 so I'd be much more likely to use it now.
