As above... yes it's fine or no it's terrible..

DH and I don't agree on any names hence the stretch here!

It is annoying to have a name that is nothing like your first name.

DH is known by his middle name, always has been, which he finds frustrating as he’s in a role where he works with lots of new people, so constantly gets ‘Benjamin? Do you go by Ben or Benjy?’ And has to say ‘no, I actually go by Andrew which is my middle name’ endlessly.

It was also weird marrying Benjamin when my relationship was with Andrew.

I think this is less annoying if eg you’re Jonathan but always known as Jonny, because there is a clear connection between your two names.

I think it's fine but Mumsnet gets FURIOUS if anyone suggests using anything other than the most commonly-used nickname of a name 😂

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 06/02/2021 13:04

Noooooo that is a massive stretch and it comparable to Peggy / Margaret. Harry is already a diminutive, of Henry. It’s like using Peggy as a diminutive of Penelope.

Henry - Hal?
Ezekiel - Zeke?

Ijustlikedthename · 06/02/2021 13:31

Sorry, I agree with pps-totally daft!

HenriettaHeffalump · 06/02/2021 15:00

No, sorry.

Zachary is lovely! He will probably get Zach, which I also like.

Meh, people always say Mumsnetters are furious and fuming when they state an opinion they are asked for.
Dotinthecity · 06/02/2021 15:09

Why would you not just name him Harry and be done with it?

TheUndoingProject · 06/02/2021 15:09

I think it’s such a stretch that it will be difficult to “enforce” has he grows up. His friends are school aren’t going to use your nickname of preference so you may be disappointed if you don’t want him to be called Zach etc.

bitliketonyhares · 06/02/2021 15:14

This doesn't work in the slightest. Unless you name him ZachHarry - please don't by the way.

bitliketonyhares · 06/02/2021 15:15

If you both like the nickname Harry, can you not just call him Harry?

MindBodyChocolate · 06/02/2021 15:18

DS2 is a Zachary and I love it. I genuinely never considered the possibility that he would become a Zach :) I call him Zachary but at school he’s mostly zach which fortunately I also like.

I also never considered Harry Grin

What @borageforager said.

Lots of people have nick names or ‘known as’ names that are nothing like their real names.
So Zachary on the birth certificate and Harry day to day: no problem at all. A NN doesn’t have to be a shortening of the name.

True. One of my dc has a nn (within the house family) that is nothing to do with his name. It is really common for people to pick up names from things they do, or look like, or the way someone mispronounced something when they were little or lots of other reasons but that is completely different from saying 'I want my dc to be called Harry' (a well known, perfectly nice name) 'so therefore I'll name him Zachary'' (another really nice name, but a completely different name).
It makes no sense.

User97531 · 06/02/2021 19:42

Wow loads more responses on here than I imagined I would get! Mostly confirming my opinion that no this is not a thing Grin Back to trying to figure out a name we can both agree on though.. I do wish it wasn't so hard!

It's just a bit try-hard. Zachariah is slightly closer to the Harry sound, but still not really right.

Harold/Harald?

TinyCake · 07/02/2021 04:59

No sorry.
Unless you call him Zachary Harry, known as Harry. But I'm not sure how many people are known by their second name these days.

RuthW · 07/02/2021 11:15

I think it's fine.

RuthW · 07/02/2021 11:16

Dd would have been Frederick be known as Eric if she was a boy.
