Rafferty/Rafe/Raffey

Which do you prefer and what 'feel' do you get?:
Rafferty
Rafe
Raffey/Raffy

I love Raffey but feel like we should give a 'proper' name on birth certificate. I don't want Ralph in case it's pronounced Ralf.

Also like Raphel pronounced RAF-EL like Raphael Rowe but not keen on the RAFF-EYE-EL pronunciation

I like Rafferty with NN Raffy.

KirstenBlest · 05/02/2021 13:29

I'm not keen on any and R names are very popular at the moment.

Rafferty is a nice surname.
Rafe - not bad
Raff(e)y only as a nn.

Raphel too similar to Raffle.

Raphael is popular around here (grim area)

Of them, Rafe.

Sorry to not be more positive. Raf just makes me think of the military.

MercyBodle · 05/02/2021 13:52

I love Rafe and like Rafferty. I like Raffy as a nickname for either.

TheVanguardSix · 05/02/2021 13:58

Rafferty

Overthinkingalways · 05/02/2021 14:02

The other contender is Arthur. But the popularity puts me off. Especially as DC1 has a fairly unusual name 250ish in charts.

Rafferty, Raffie for short.

Opia90 · 05/02/2021 14:10

My nephew is Rafferty, we nn him Raffey and Raff.

FluffyEggsontoast · 05/02/2021 16:09

If you like fairly unusual names @Overthinkingalways (I see your first son is approximately number 250)
As someone has already said- there's quite a lot of popular boy R names and they do all merge into one so I'm not sure if Rafferty is as unusual as you're expecting. Although it's low down in the charts, lots of names like Ralph are approaching top 100 and are getting shortened to Raffy. I know a few Rafferty, Ralph, Rafe, Raphael ... all of which get shortened to Raffy.

Yes Arthur probably too popular for you too, I'd avoid all the top 100 names

Austin?
Nathaniel?
Laurence?
Tristan?
Winston
Walter
Spencer
Peter
Matthew ?

Love Rafe ( refined) and Rafferty ( charming rogue) but don’t like Raffy... too cutsie.

Saltnpepperr · 05/02/2021 16:36

Love Rafferty with nickname Raffie

LittleRa · 05/02/2021 16:38

Chris Ramsey (comedian) and wife Rosie have just had a baby called Rafe. Their older boy is Robin.

blue25 · 05/02/2021 16:40

I don’t like any. They sound pretentious to me.

Divebar2021 · 05/02/2021 16:58

I guess it depends where you live. None of them would seem particular pretentious around here... lots of variety.

BackforGood · 05/02/2021 17:13

Personally I don't like any of them, but I'm intrigued......

I don't want Ralph in case it's pronounced Ralf.

How else would you pronounce Ralph ? Confused

ILoveShula · 05/02/2021 17:14

Raif

Overthinkingalways · 05/02/2021 17:15

@BackforGood as Rafe. That’s an traditional English pronunciation of Ralph

Overthinkingalways · 05/02/2021 17:18

@FluffyEggsontoast I like Nate but not Nathaniel and goes back to the same dilemma of having a proper name on the birth certificate. Although does that matter these days anyway with all the Alfie, Harry, albie, kit, Tommy etc?

VenusClapTrap · 05/02/2021 17:20

Really dislike Rafferty and it’s shortened forms. It seemed to be very popular about a decade ago - didn’t some sleb use it for their kid?

I rather like Arthur.

Swingometer · 05/02/2021 17:27

They all sound a bit pretentious to me. I think Ralph (pronounced Ralf) is much nicer!

I like Nathaniel/ Nate and don't think that has the same 'try too hard' connotations as Rafferty/ Rafe

DwangelaForever · 05/02/2021 17:44

Rafe reminds me of pearl harbour. I like Rafferty but it's very surname as given name for me

FluffyEggsontoast · 05/02/2021 19:47

I think Nate would be perfectly fine on its own

How about Nico @Overthinkingalways

ConkerBonkers · 05/02/2021 19:58

Rafferty, but use your favourite shortened version day to day

Chilldonaldchill · 05/02/2021 20:08

I love Rafe and Rafael.
Rafferty is ok.
Raffey is a very cute nickname for any of the above.

Overthinkingalways · 05/02/2021 20:31

Hmm the pretentious/try hard comments put me off. We are very much an average joe family!
