Are these names too similar?

DD2 is due in a few weeks time. Our 2 year old DD is called Aurelia (pronounced Au-Ray-Lia), and OH and I both really like the name Cecilia. But are they too similar?

I also like Cecily, but OH just hears Cecil and isn't so keen.

Please be kind and don't ruin the name for us, we're about 90% sure, but I just wanted to check opinions?

The are a little close. Not overly though.
I’d prefer Cecily as a name if I was choosing between the two though. Good luck making your decision!

ohcrepe · 03/02/2021 19:26

I think they are pretty similar. I also prefer Cecily. Sorry op.

christmasathomeagain · 03/02/2021 19:27

My two (boy and girl) have similar sounding names and now complain as they can't tell who I'm shouting 😂

SaffieSoph · 03/02/2021 19:30

They are similar but both lovely! Cecilia might get shortened to CeCe and that sounds very different but also lovely!

Twickerhun · 03/02/2021 19:32

I don’t think they are too similar - lovely names

Sausagedog1 · 03/02/2021 19:36

I think the fact you pronounce it ah-ray-lia
makes it ok as they don't rhyme.
Also, it's actually quite nice to have sibling names that have a similar feel to them. I think they are lovely together. If you love the name definitely don't be put off by that.
If it was Aurelia and Aurora or Amelia if would be different but they are completely different names with a different initial.

Missingthebridegene · 03/02/2021 19:39

It's a gorgeous name but for me I'd feel they were too similar and there may be the perception you've tried to make them similar x could you have it as a middle name? It's tough as there's loads of names I love but feel are too similar to the existing three! X

Chilldonaldchill · 03/02/2021 20:29

I think they are a little matchy but not as bad as some I've known (I know two Billy and Tilly pairings). Both names are lovely. I actually really love Cecily so would go for that personally but I think Cecilia is fine - especially as you pronounce Aurelia with the ray sound.

partyatthepalace · 03/02/2021 20:38

They are quite matchy but not too much.

Cecilia is a lovely name

bourbonne · 03/02/2021 20:41

A bit full-on together, I think. Cecily is lovely, though.

ILoveStickers · 03/02/2021 20:43

If you pronounced it aur-EE-lia then it would be a bit much, but your way is fine.

Very Roman vibes in your house! Sounds cool tbh.

MrsWhistledown · 03/02/2021 20:45

I agree with pp that because of your pronunciation of Aurelia Cecilia isnt too close in sound Smile

AnnaSW1 · 03/02/2021 20:46

I don't think they are too similar at all.

Onlinedilema · 03/02/2021 21:12

No I don't think they are too similar.

ostrichlover · 03/02/2021 21:42

I don’t even think they sound that similar. Cecilia is such a pretty name I’d go for that one if I were you. If it ever gets confusing you can always resort to nicknames when calling them from afar etc. But other than that I dont think it’s a problem :)

Monkeypeas · 03/02/2021 21:50

My friend has two girls with both those names. It’s fine, they’re nice names

Agree with this, since her sister is pronounced Au -ray- lia, then Cecilia is perfectly fine. I love Roman names, I always think they sound very elegant (my top 2 girls names currently are Antonia and Claudia) and I think Aurelia and Cecilia sound beautiful together.
ArosAdraDrosDolig · 03/02/2021 22:43

Cicely? Does that solve the Cecil issue for your Dh?

VBee123 · 03/02/2021 23:09

Thanks. Glad to hear that most of you don’t think it’s too similar. Now to get her middle name sorted.
And thanks for being so kind, I hate it when other people trash others name choices.

It’s a nice name but it just reminds me of Sicily in Italy.

Thats funny I didn’t think it’d be a very common combination.

Thanks, we didn’t plan the Roman vibes it just happened, my name could be classed as Roman too I guess, well definitely Latin.

IamnotwhouthinkIam - Antonia and Claudia are lovely Roman names, maybe if we have another girl Grin

Not too similar.

Enko · 04/02/2021 09:00

It's the lia at the end that will get you in 5+ years time when you call Cecelia you get Aurelia going yes? I have an Aoife and an Eloisa on the surface not similar at all but that end sound ah/sa creates that issue.

So if that will bother you don't use Cecilia.

Personally didn't bother me we went with names we liked and I still like them. I think Cecilia is a beautiful name (as is Aurelia)
