Robyn

We're expecting a girl in May and Robyn is our top choice at the moment. What are your thoughts? I wasn't sure about the spelling with a Y but DH likes it.

Also the there is a good chance our baby will have red hair as this runs in the family. I'm thinking of Robin Redbreast and whether this will be something commented on!

I always thought with an i was male and y female?

Alittlebitlostrightnow · 03/02/2021 10:04

Love it. And yes, Y is female version and I is male.

golddustwomen · 03/02/2021 10:05

Love it

Synchrony · 03/02/2021 10:07

I thought Robin could be male or female, but Robyn was mostly female.
Personally prefer Robin for both sexes.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 03/02/2021 10:16

Robin has been for a girl as well and I like it. I don't like it with a y.

I know a beautiful Robin with the most amazing red hair. She's a teenager now. Never had Robin Redbreast.

LivingMyBestLife2020 · 03/02/2021 10:17

Love it (with the y)

LittleRa · 03/02/2021 10:19

I like it. Y for a girl and I for a boy would be my thoughts.

ArsenicNLace · 03/02/2021 10:49

My son is definitely in the 'i' for a boy and 'y' for a girl camp. We would have had Robin/Robyn for either a boy or a girl.

No issues whatsoever. He gets called Robin. No silly nicknames and he has so far never come across another Robin even though he is now at 6th form.

Lisboa21 · 03/02/2021 10:52

Thanks for all your responses, I'm glad others like it too. I agree Robin or Robyn could be used for a girl but I think we'd go with the y spelling.

Robyn for a girl definitely

Robin I would definitely assume was a boy

Rubybluesy · 03/02/2021 11:01

I like it with a Y

YoniAndGuy · 03/02/2021 11:48

Robyn's definitely the female spelling.

NemosPoorlyFinn · 03/02/2021 11:55

Robin-male
Robyn -female in my opinion

Robyn was actually going to be my sons name if he was a girl

TheRedFox · 03/02/2021 21:11

Love it but can't decide which spelling I prefer! 😂

partyatthepalace · 03/02/2021 21:15

I love it, but much prefer the straightforward Robin spelling for girls or boys.

It’s becoming mainly a girls name I think (like Rowan), and the Robin spelling has always been used for girls (I know two older ladies called Robin)

Robyn seems an unnecessarily younique spelling to me - like Jayne.

A Robin with red hair is lovely, wouldn’t worry about that.

DinosaurDiana · 03/02/2021 21:20

I have never known a female Robin.
It’s always been Robyn, and I like it.

MaryBoBary · 03/02/2021 21:28

I really like robyn for a girl and don't think the Robin redbreast thing will happen. The only thing that puts me off is it being shortened to Rob.

bourbonne · 03/02/2021 21:39

I prefer Robin - Robyn looks a bit made-up in a dated sort of way (exactly like Jayne, as a PP mentioned).

That said, I think Robyn is the more common spelling for a girl, and I'd probably guess Robyn if I heard it. I've known one of each, but there's the pop star too.

SchruteFarm · 03/02/2021 21:40

I know 2 Robyn's, one is 2 and the other mid-20s. Lovely name!

JKRismyhero · 03/02/2021 21:42

I love it

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 03/02/2021 21:48

It's okay, but I definitely prefer the more classic Robin spelling. Imo it's a unisex nature name (like Rowan, Eden etc) so it should be spelt like the bird whatever the gender of the person (Robyn just looks misspelt and also looks more dated to me for some reason, sorry). Robin with red hair is fine though, I wouldn't even think about that.

TheRedFox · 03/02/2021 21:58

I definitely don't think RobYn is younique (and I HATE a younique name). It's just a variation and think it is down to personal preference.

Wouldn't make any connection / association at all with Robin red breast and now you point it out think it is quite nice!

danascully96 · 03/02/2021 22:07

Robyn just looks spelled wrong to me. Robin for all genders (but I'm American living in UK, so I don't have the same cultural references).

Lisboa21 · 03/02/2021 22:16

Thanks everyone. I was clearly overthinking the red hair connection! Agree with pp that the spelling is probably just down to personal preference, likely to divide opinion whichever one we choose. Got a few more months to decide thank goodness!
