Me and DH are expecting a DD soon and have been trying to think of names. Many names DH comes up with are just off limits for me because people i've know in my life (usually people who haven't had a great time knowing), but it can be frustrating when the names themselves are quite pretty. Just wondered if and what people's big no names are because of people you know. Mine are Avery, Vivienne and Willow!

Claire, Jodie, Fiona, Grace

VanillaAndOrange · 05/02/2021 20:56

I've known a lot of unpleasant people called Jade, but I wouldn't say it put me off the name because I don't like it that much anyway, just as a collection of sounds.

I disliked Michael until I was in my 30s because of two nasty ones when I was younger, then I met an adorable one, and now I'm kind of neutral about it. I could have used it if DH had passionately wanted to. The name I really felt I couldn't use was Joseph/Joe, which was the name of an ex, not because he was horrible, but because he was lovely and probably the love of my life, and it would feel a bit unfair to DH to name a child after him (although DH wouldn't have minded).

I asked my MIL why she had given my husband his name, and if it was after a certain actor. No, it was after a boy she liked in school
StillMedusa · 05/02/2021 22:01

Amanda... bullied me for years. Ditto an Anne.
Due to being a TA for many years I'm off all Daniels, Jordans (had too many naughty ones) and at the moment every other girl seems to be called Lily-Mai or Ava-Grace.. pretty enough but there are so many of them!

I’m Karen and whoever came up with calling people Karen’s can just fuck off to the far side of Fuckville!! It also doesn’t help that I am assertive about speaking up but it’s made me think twice about doing that because I know there is a lazy come back for any arsehole on social media. I debated hiding my real first name on Facebook for that reason. It shouldn’t bother me but it can sometimes. Sometimes I make a joke about always having the urge to speak to the manager but I just wish it wasn’t a thing at all. Please avoid calling anyone Karen until this dies down. If ever.

Other names
Alexa due to Amazon
Alison due to a rather deranged woman I know
Diana because of Princess D
Bianca because of Eastenders screeching

Fascinationends · 06/02/2021 08:24

I always wanted to be called Karen.
Another teacher, so many names were unusable when naming dc either due to frequency of use (Evie, Isabella and all permutations being 2 that had to be distinguished by surname also) or connotation. I certainly do not suggest "all -s are unpleasant children" but in my 20 years of teaching there are a few names which have tended to go this way.
And no to Freya, I really do not like it.

niynycachu · 06/02/2021 16:52

Dylan because hardly anyone pronounces it correctly.

JimmyJabs · 06/02/2021 21:24

There were some horrible children who bullied me at school, and all of their names are spoiled for me now - Kirsty, Kelly, Donna, Katie, Lisa for the girls, and Russell, Paul, Matthew, James for the boys. I don't think any of them are particularly nice anyway, but that could be extreme prejudice speaking!

IcedLimes · 07/02/2021 11:25

Ruby bullied dd1 at primary school, so has been ruined for me.

Happenchance · 07/02/2021 22:10

Mathew and Simon – Let’s just say that the ones that I’ve known have been characters.

Dominic because of Cummings.

Rhona because of the shortening of Coronavirus to ‘rona (Rhona Iris is definitely ruined).

Deirdre because of the pronunciation of this name in Corrie.

Onyx (for an animal) because it’s a waste management company.

lorettAspaghettA · 07/02/2021 22:12

Ed & Ted remind me of two American serial killers.

MyNameHasBeenTaken · 07/02/2021 22:22

John. Bullied ds through primary.
Wasnt the smartest kid.
Signed his name jonh half the time.

LindaCartersBun · 07/02/2021 22:22

Yes to Alexa and Amazon. Such a shame, as it’s a lovely name.

I also really liked Aviva when I was expecting DD but it’s a bank or mortgage lender or something, isn’t it? Didn’t really want to name my child after a financial services provider.

35andThriving · 07/02/2021 22:30

I liked Jethro and then realised it sounded too much like death row.

Sadie, has the words sad and die in it. Amos just makes me think of the word anus.

None have been ruined by people I've known. I just tend to focus more or the sound / spelling of names, and can be swayed by the meanings of names sometimes.

MrsB2019x · 08/02/2021 12:03

No Ethans for me - worked in childcare/social work for 10+ years and every one I have met has been a bit of a shit 😂

RichAssWhoopin · 08/02/2021 13:09

There were TWO girls at school with Jo names known as JoJo who were the type to scrawl "Emms is a slut" on the toilet walls. With that said it hasn't ruined Jo names for me. Quite like Joanna and Josephine.

SkittlesRainbow · 08/02/2021 13:13

Mine is Gemma. I've never met a Gemma who hasn't turned out to be a bit of a psycho!

Also the name Lee especially when spelt Leigh. I have lots of negative associations with this name.

PurpleRainDancer · 08/02/2021 13:18

Any version of Linzi/Lindsay. Shudders.

TwirpingBird · 08/02/2021 13:18

Both me and DH have been secondary teachers at one time or another.

All names are ruined 😆 it took us months to find names for our DDs we both didnt have bad associations with. We chose quite 'old' names.

Tallybeebloom · 09/02/2021 12:54

Luca

My dad is Italian and I grew up in Italy and as long as I can remember I wanted to call my future son this. Now, it's not the popularity that bothers me (it's always been pretty popular in Italy) but more that it is now constantly used by people who aren't Italian in the UK. This has totally put me off using the name as it means it no longer feels like a reflection of my and my child's heritage.

35andThriving · 09/02/2021 19:55

niynycachu, how is Dylan meant to be pronounced? I'd like to know if I've been saying it correctly.

SeigneurLapindeGrantham · 09/02/2021 20:08

Knew a truly awful Laura once and still see from time to time. I'd have to start a thread about how phoney she is.

HideTanner · 09/02/2021 20:50

Melissas are the most hideous cows.

Grahams/Graemes are the dullest men in dullsville.

scentedgeranium · 09/02/2021 20:55

Milly and Rosa and Anna and Verity and Emma - my DD's principal tormentors at school. I'll never like those names on anyone

MadeOfStarStuff · 11/02/2021 20:34

I used to love the name Rowan until I worked with a guy called Rowan who was a total nightmare and it ruined the name completely for me.
