What do you reckon for a girl born on 1 Feb?
(Not me, just this is At Bridget's day).

I love Bridie.

chipsandgin · 01/02/2021 16:35

Jones? Maybe it’s just my age, but it’s what immediately springs to mind!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 01/02/2021 16:36

Lovely name - unless your surname is Jones, then I'd advise against it!

Oblomov21 · 01/02/2021 16:37

Really don't like it.

YoniAndGuy · 01/02/2021 16:52

Mmm, not really.

I don't quite know why. I think I just don't like that the first bit is 'bridge'. It isn't the nicest sounding.

Like Bridie though.

Sheleg · 01/02/2021 17:28

Horrible, harsh sound.

BrandoraPaithwaite · 01/02/2021 17:35

I really like it and would have considered it for dd but we already have a Bridget in the family and it wouldn't have been appropriate.

One of my posh friends at uni had a sister called Bridget. She used to call her Biggie as a nickname, and sometimes Big-shit which I found hilarious. But probably Bridget didn't.

WagnerTheWehrWolf · 01/02/2021 17:38

There was a supermodel in the 90s called Bridget Hall and I remember thinking she was the most unBridgety looking Bridget.

I love St Bridget, or at least the pagan goddess whose identity was pinched, but I don't love the name.

LadyEloise · 01/02/2021 17:49

@chipsandgin
I could never understand Helen Fielding giving her very English heroine such a
quintessentially Irish name. Smile
And as someone pointed out on another thread, a Welsh surname.

SnottyLottie · 01/02/2021 18:09

Not my style, I personally feel like it’s in middle age territory (Barbara etc) so isn’t due a revival just yet and sounds a bit clunky and old fashion. It also reminds me of bridges and Bridget Jones (mainly “come the fuck on, Bridget” 😆) when I hear it.

MercyBodle · 02/02/2021 01:06

I love it, and love Bridie too. It is not just an Irish name, but also has a long history of use in England. It appears several times in my English family tree. There was a Princess Bridget of York, daughter of Edward lV, and Biddy (a common nickname for Bridget) in Dickens' Great Expectations.
An under-used classic, with a great meaning: strength.

babyinthacorner · 02/02/2021 01:13

I knew the most wonderful girl called Bridget. People have said it’s old fashioned or whatever. Let me tell you she was the coolest, most creative and incredible person I’ve ever known. She had the widest tastes in music and introduced me to stuff I would never have heard but for her. She shaped my life and I’m So thankful.
It’s not the name, it’s the person behind it. But let me tell you I knew the most wonderful Bridget.

Margotshypotheticaldog · 02/02/2021 01:26

Bridget was indeed a Goddess before the Catholic Church Christian-ised her. And interestingly, when the old Irish pagan beliefs mingled with the Afro Caribbean beliefs, Maman Brigitte was born, one of the only White Voodoo queens. And she was most certainly a hard drinking foul mouthed party animal! So there you go now 😊

Bridget
TenShortStories · 02/02/2021 01:31

I didn't like it until I met a 6 year old Bridget. It is now just her lovely name, so I vote yes.

WagnerTheWehrWolf · 02/02/2021 01:32

Ooh I didn't know that about Maman Brigitte, @Margotshypotheticaldog. Very interesting.

DramaAlpaca · 02/02/2021 01:36

Yes, I like it. I didn't until recently but now I like it a lot.

SageRosemary · 02/02/2021 01:36

I love it, would have been for 3rd DD if we'd had one.

Could also shorten to Bree.

A girl I know was named for her 2 grannies, Bridget & Anne - Brianne.

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 02/02/2021 04:37

Love Bridget & shortened to Bree not Bridie.

PrawnCorset · 02/02/2021 04:51

Bridget could be retro chic. Bridie, on the other hand, is unrevivable. It’s essentially Gladys, Edna or Brenda.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 02/02/2021 05:06

Bridget is okay, maybe slightly harsh sounding (reminds me of similar Margaret) but perfectly useable. I remember Bridget Hall! There's also actress Bridget Fonda who was quite famous for a while. I love the nn Birdie rather than Bridie (Birdie would be very cute on a little one).

SeanChailleach · 02/02/2021 07:13

Ooh I like Birdie. Also Bríd pronounced Breezh.

OP posts:
TansyViolet · 02/02/2021 08:17

I think Bŕee sounds too much like Brie cheese

TansyViolet · 02/02/2021 08:27

I can easily imagine a London hipster calling a child Bridie, but I've never known an elderly Bridie, so I don't have that association. I was aware of the name though

Sausagedog1 · 02/02/2021 09:06

It's a name that I currently think sounds awful and harsh but no doubt it is going to get trendy and I'll start thinking is actually quite nice Grin

ILoveStickers · 02/02/2021 09:33

I'm another one who thinks "come the fuck on, Bridget!" 😄

Maybe Brigitte, à la Bardot, or Brigitta, à la Sound of Music.
