Boy name: internal conflict

Help! Baby boy name trouble.

I'm 23 weeks with our 4th boy. We felt like we had exhausted baby boy names, we bought the biggest name book and we both have fallen in love with the name Rupert.

Unfortunately one of my friends has a 5yr old Rupert and I know she has loved the name for many years before that.

The name Rupert goes Superbly well with my other boys; Jonathan, Alistair and Emerson. It also is a variation of Robert which is a family name which I cannot use directly so it has a good feel to it.

My friend is a very reasonable and positive person, I met her when she had baby Rupert, I love her company and although we've not seen each other for almost a year (covid) I value our friendship. I don't think she would ever voice issue BUT am I being a jerk? Can anyone suggest another name? I feel like I've fallen for Rupert and it's a sin😬 .

I think it's fine. Go for it.

PurBal · 01/02/2021 08:19

I don't think it's a problem at all. We like the name Edward and know 4 people who have used it in the last 3 years. All have gone with Ted for short. We will probably go with it.

It’s fine - it’s a popular name these days.

Does her son have a nickname you can avoid?

She doesn't really abbreviate, occasionally it's "rups" not sure I could avoid that, is there a nickname? I would think maybe bertie but she also has a bertie 😆

I would ask her how she would feel. She sounds nice and you would be able to guage by her response. Congratulations on 4 boys and I love your other boys names, underused but strong.

It's completely fine to use it.

An old uni friend has recently used the same name as our son for their first boy and I was just flattered (in an odd way) because they validated our choice of thinking it is a good name by also choosing it, also there's enough age between them (about 8 years) that people won't get confused. Plus we used it first 😉

MimiDaisy11 · 01/02/2021 11:33

It's fine. It's not like she came up with the name. I really don't get people who get annoyed. I'd try and avoid nieces' and nephews' names but really if you like it, it's fine. There will be a big enough age difference it's not like you'll confuse them or likely that they'll hang out with each other.

Whatsyourflava · 01/02/2021 11:39

It's completely fine. Whilst the name isn't all that common, your friend has picked a name in the top 200, she won't be at all surprised someone else had picked it. Maybe text her to warn her if you're that concerned. It's completely fine. I bet she'll be flattered
Name does sound lovely with siblings

Peter, Jasper and Tristan give me a similar feel and all except Jasper are more unusual these days than Rupert

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 01/02/2021 12:40

I think it’s fine too. There were over 600 Ruperts born in 2019 and I imagine they tend to be concentrated in certain demographics, making it feel more common than its national popularity would suggest.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 01/02/2021 12:41

PS if you decide not to go for it I have always liked Robin as a variant of Robert.

Thank you, Robin was actually the leader with Quentin before we hit Rupert!
