Middle Names Limit?!

I've been thinking I'd really like to include my maiden name in our baby's name, as an extra middle name. However, we already have two middle names picked out to honour family members. Am I crazy to think of adding this as a third 'middle' name?

Example:

Lucy Jean Elizabeth MacDonald McKinley

...who would day to day be Lucy McKinley? Or Lucy J. E. M. McKinley?

Do we think this is OTT / too much of a burden? Is there a limit on number of middle names we're allowed? 🙈

It's a bit long, but I suppose in day to day life, it doesn't matter.

It'll just be a pain to fill in forms Grin

ILoveStickers · 31/01/2021 16:21

I don't think there's a birth certificate limit, but there is notional character limit on passport names (it's pretty long though).

If it helps, I know several people who've done first name, two middle names, two last names. It seemed a bit much to me, but at the end of the day, why not.

My DD has 3 middle names as ex desperately wanted to include his step mum's name as well as our mums names. DD hates it as it's too many and we can never get them all on forms like passports etc which is annoying. It's your call but I'd stick with 2 personally

It’s fine. Three ‘Christian’ names plus mothers maiden name is a very Scottish thing! I like it.

WellityWellityWellity · 31/01/2021 20:54

I know someone who has this.

She is First name, middle name 1, middle name 2, her maiden name, surname.

WellityWellityWellity · 31/01/2021 20:55

Oh sorry and yes, it's fine.

ClementineFox · 31/01/2021 22:36

Posh people do this all the time, go for it! Gorgeous name xxx

Some of my siblings have many middle names.
It is a pain for them filling in forms etc.
But they survive.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 01/02/2021 03:49

It's absolutely fine imo - it's not especially unusual to have 3 middle names (especially when one is a family surname - it's not that different to double-barrelling). As pp note, the only issue will be that your DC will sometimes struggle to fit the whole name on forms (so will have to use the initials or just one of the names instead) but I don't think that's a huge deal .

JollyGreenGiantess · 01/02/2021 03:50

I thought you meant ‘Limit’ as the name 😂

PeanutButtaCups · 01/02/2021 03:55

It seems fine to me, it’s not like she will be called her full name all the time

ItsReallyOnlyMe · 01/02/2021 03:57

My two only have 2 middle names - which they do like as it makes them different from their friends - but they did complain to in later years when taking GCSEs and A levels that the box on each exam was too small to fit their full name in ! So I don't know what this would be like with 4 names - (that is if GCSEs and A levels are ever taken again !) - but the same principle arises for any form I guess. (It would be worse with online forms with character limits).

MaverickDanger · 01/02/2021 04:01

My mum has three middle names, the shortest of which is 5 letters.

Filling in forms is hard when it’s pre-designed boxes as she has nearly 40 characters in her full name.

Tavannach · 01/02/2021 05:03

Five names is too much. Think of the bore of forms which don't have enough space, and exams.
Could you include your surname, pick one side of the family and honour them and save the other side for any future baby?

Ruibies · 03/02/2021 15:17

I have 3 middle names! 2 I was given and 1 is my maiden name which i didn't want to double barrel. My friends thought it was a silly move but there is a nice flow to it and tbh how often to do you even have to input your full name into anything....it's not a day to day concern. Only thing I would say is think about number of characters total, my longer middle name is offset by my 3 letter maiden name, but still 37 letters total. Go for it!

Carouselfish · 03/02/2021 18:12

Yeah our children have that many op. It's a pain on forms but wanted my surname in there as not married and anti-double barrelling.
