Boys names!

Not for the first time, we cannot agree on boys names. We've already used the ones we particularly liked enough to agree on, and generally have a small list of what we're agreeing on now.

Frederick (Freddie as a short form) - my personal favourite.

Arthur (Artie short form) - his favourite

Archer (Archie) - the full name is too surname-y for me.

Alexander (I love Xander, him really not so much)

Edward (Teddy/Ed) - I really don't like the fully name here. Older brother-to-be won't stop suggesting it though!

Tobias (Toby) - both like it, though not particularly wowed by it.

I think I'm winning on Freddie but still waiting to see if something hits us both as 'perfect'. Though husband pretty much 'won' on naming our eldest, as this is our last I feel I should have final (agreed) choice.

We have a load of super-cool names we'd love to go for as well (Atlas, Orion, Fox, Artimus and more), but alas we are not brave nor 'celeb cool' enough to get away with it Grin.

Frederick and Arthur are both lovely, but quite well used at the moment, if that bothers you.

I think Tobias is lovely too and a bit less commonly used.

I like Alexander but really don't like Xander, even though I know a lovely one.

Edward is great and so many nn options, including Teddy. But also quite popular. If you aren't fussed about popularity and like Teddy, you could use Theodore as the long name?

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 30/01/2021 14:38

Tobias is lovely.

I know an Alexander whose family mix and match the short forms and he gets Xander Alex and Al interchangeably. Might that work, you call him Xander and DH Alex or whatever.

If you like more out there names what about Edward but nn Bear? There are a few Bears around!

Afewgoodnames · 30/01/2021 14:42

I'm not highly fussed about popularity. With children in school and nursery, I have a general idea of what's popular in our local area and these names don't really come up that often. There's is a big pattern for Zachary and Jackson, many kids have the short form as their proper names (like Tommy for example). We also live in a very multicultural area so the name range is even bigger. I wouldn't be surprised to come across another in their class but I also doubt they'd be one of 5, if that makes sense.

Alexander is definitely the most versatile. I think my husband finds it a bit on the 'boring' side - we grew up in different parts of the UK, so he knew a few but I always thought it to be a very 'well-to-do English name'.

Bear is cute! I still don't like Edward though, not sure why?

My favourite is Frederick (Freddie) by far.
Tobias becomes Toby which I really dislike (Toby jugs, Toby the square engine...)

How about Tristan?

TheVanguardSix · 30/01/2021 14:54

Or Axel (cooler than Alex and not too out there).
Atticus?

Afewgoodnames · 30/01/2021 15:02

Tristan is one of my absolute favourites. I knew a lovely Tristan as a child, but my husband has fully vetoed it. Which is fair, as I had to seriously put my foot down over 'Ronald'...

I also like Axel, but we're really really not cool enough to pull it off sadly. It also wouldn't go with our surname, which I'd rather not share even though I've name changed. Suffice to say, it would make the poor child sound like he needed an MOT said out loud Wink.

Freddie worth middle name Fox would be really great I think!

I love both Freddie and Arthur and love nickname Artie

Whatsyourflava · 30/01/2021 15:06

I love Tristan

Austin? Seth? Caleb? Laurence? Peter? Otis? Wilfred ?

Babydust13 · 30/01/2021 16:26

Archer is my fav from your list unfortunately I couldn't get my OH to agree 😥😥

Twizbe · 30/01/2021 17:49

Love Frederick. Would have been DD's name if she'd been a boy

partyatthepalace · 30/01/2021 19:58

I love Arthur, and really like Edward.

Frederick is nice.

The are all v popular (if that bothers you...)
Archer/Archie - I like Archie, don't like Archer (I'd go trad with Archibald)
I like Tobias but not Toby (bit wet)
Don't mind Alexander - how about Sandy or Sacha as short forms?

Other thoughts - James (Jamie), Robert (Robbie/Bobby), John (Johnny), Patrick, Rory, Miles, Lawrence (Lawrie), Rufus, Alistair,
Christopher (Kit/Christy), Guy, Hugh, Nathaniel (Nat/Nate),

I misread Orian as Onion Grin

Whichnamepls · 30/01/2021 20:03

If you like Teddy/Ted then how about Theodore?

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 31/01/2021 01:05

Of your choices my favourites are Edward and Alexander - both have stayed in the E and W top 100 for at least a century for a reason imo.

Edward is very English classic sounding (used by such various authors as Shakespeare, Bronte, Austen, Dickens etc) and Alexander is so internationally well used.

Both names also have the bonus of so many nn's/variations - nearly a dozen each, so a child can easily make the name suit his personality imo (I like Bear, Ned or Iolo for Edward, and Lex, Xan or Sacha for Alexander personally).

Frederick, Arthur and Tobias are nice traditional names but much more subject to the whims of fashion (so could date more) as well as having less nn options. Archer is very trendy and not my taste, sorry.

WaxOnFeckOff · 31/01/2021 01:57

You could have Edwin or Edgar instead of Edward?

WaxOnFeckOff · 31/01/2021 01:58

Emerson/Emmet?

Mctm123 · 31/01/2021 08:33

I have a Toby who is just adorable (biased of course!) and I have a Teddy on the way but I don’t like Tobias or Edward so went with the short versions!

Good luck, it’s so difficult!

starkid · 31/01/2021 17:20

I like Archer and Tobias :)

LittleTiger007 · 31/01/2021 23:15

Tobias/Toby is my favourite it’s an adorable name when small and a cool name for a man.
Freddie and Teddy are great too

AliceMcK · 01/02/2021 00:52

Toby was my Nans dog and re,I DS me of Toby mugs.

I love family/traditional names or names that mean something to us.

Archie/Archibald was my Grandads name which he apparently hated, I never even knew his name was Archibald until I finally found his birth registry, his tombstone said Arthur, which has been a long-standing family name since and one we all love, especially when “one for Arthur” won the grand national a few years ago 😂🤑

Edward (Ned was my other grandad) and got uncles and cousins with that name.

Love Joseph, Christopher and not a personal family name but love Freddie too.

Not helpful but I much prefer your super-cool list!
