Leonard....?!

Hi guys!

Expecting my 2nd boy, I was named after my grandad, his name was Leonard nn Len. No one actually calls me by my real name, I go as Leigh so not too concerned about the names sounding too similar. However, does Leonard actually sound right? We like traditional names which can have a nickname, think Thomas Tommy, Vincent Vinnie. Does Leonard nn Lennie sound ok or old fashioned?

I would. It'll probably get shortened to Lennie/Len etc - but it's a nice name for a boy.

RuthW · 29/01/2021 12:17

Lovely

pontiouspilates · 29/01/2021 12:20

Lovely name with equally good NNs, go for it!

SaffyWall · 29/01/2021 12:20

I know two Leonards/Lenny's (age 5 and 11) - both are very great and really suit the name. Love it!

I know a little Leonard. He gets Lenny. It isn't my favourite name, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with it.

You could also go with Leo or Leon if you didn't want the full name.

partyatthepalace · 29/01/2021 19:31

I think it’s probably coming back.

Am not very keen, but it’s nice enough

Leonard (nn Lenny) is slightly old-fashioned but not extremely so - I think it's useable (and as pp pointed out he can also go by the more popular/trendy Leo or Leon if he wants when older). I also understand you wanting to use a family name, which is a lovely idea.

However would your first DS feel left out if he wasn't also named after you/your Grandad or another family member? (in which case maybe Leonard would make a better middle name for your second DS, rather than a first which makes the family link more obvious).

For the same reason you’re inclined towards it, I really like it.

SaffieSoph · 29/01/2021 20:14

Love it! One of my favourite, but husband wouldn’t go for it!

It's great. Lenny as a nn.

EuroTrashed · 30/01/2021 15:11

It’s an excellent name. Lennie for short. I’m it’s one that works well for a child / informal settings and also for the FTSE 100 boardroom.

Labobo · 30/01/2021 15:12

I like it. I prefer Leo as a nn than Lennie but both are fine.

Tomatobear · 30/01/2021 15:23

I love Leonard. So much more interesting than the same old names that are trotted out daily! Vetoed by my husband though Sad

ZebraKid71 · 30/01/2021 21:50

My 10 year old nephew is a Leonard- he has always been known as Leo but recently decided he prefers Leonard. I really like it.

MrsEricBana · 30/01/2021 21:52

Hmmm, wasn't sure but I think definitely yes having read all the above. Go for it!

sallievp · 30/01/2021 21:52

Leonard is a Great name!

Cheesypea · 30/01/2021 21:55

I knew a lovely lenny. Leon is super cool too.

purplejungle · 30/01/2021 21:58

Love it but prefer Leo as nn

Halfbloodprincess · 30/01/2021 23:01

My 3 year old is called Leonard! I get lots of compliments on his name. Day to day he is Lenny but I love it when I hear his proper name being called at the doctors or on letters.

Mummytogg · 31/01/2021 06:58

I love leonard. We also have a Vincent. Currently pregnant again and leonard is on the list!
