If I like Carys...

...what else might I like? DH likes it too but it has a bad association for him.

It’s short enough not to need a nickname, easy to spell, not frilly, and as a nice bonus is Celtic-ish (we are welsh/Irish/Scottish mix).

Oh, and doesn’t get mangled in a London accent! Eg I like Elspeth but it would be pronounced Ehwspeff here.

Thanks Grin

Celyn is Welsh for holly! It's pronounced with a hard 'c'.

Sounds like Kellin. I think it's a masculine noun, but is used as a unisex name.

WashableVelvet · 28/01/2021 20:15

So many good ones here!

Eleri would definitely be rhymed with celery here and we’re in a fairly welsh/Irish area of London 😆

It’s true about Ce- names probably being pronounced with an S, too. Don’t think Carian is a name though (??) to avoid that... damn!

Liking Nerys, Emer (Eimear?), Tesni, Anwen and others. Grin.

Clara? Bethan? Liza?

Jumpalicious · 28/01/2021 20:20

@CaffiSaliMali

I like Carys and also like: Mari Alys Eira Tesni Nia Eirys Eirlys Eleri Nerys Ffion Mali Nansi

I like Elspeth too and also Morven, Eilidh and Ishbel.

Lovely names, but how do you pronounce Eleri? Is it elle-air-ee or Elle-uh-ri (hard to explain written down). I know a lovely lady with this name but I never address her by name, since I’m not sure where the emphasis goes, or even what it sounds like (middle e as an Air?). Anyway, off topic!
Jumpalicious · 28/01/2021 20:22

Oh sorry, see the celery eleri thing has been discussed 😜

combatbarbie · 28/01/2021 20:23

My eldest was supposed to be called Carys, then she was born and I was like nope..... You don't look like a Carys. She ended up Saskia, no idea where it came from but I love it.

KirstenBlest · 28/01/2021 20:26

@Jumpalicious, yes, rhymes with Kerry. El-erry.

Ellmau · 28/01/2021 20:27

Luned is pretty.

Chunkymenrock · 28/01/2021 20:35

Eleri is Elle-AIR-ree.

Jumpalicious · 28/01/2021 20:39
@Jumpalicious, yes, rhymes with Kerry. El-erry.
Thank you! Sorry to go on, but is there a pause so it’s El-(beat)-erry (to rhyme with Kerry!), or does it flow? Just like celery? I’m sure she paused on the (several) occasions that she’s mentioned her own name... and yet, I have a complete mental block!

KirstenBlest · 28/01/2021 20:46

It sounds like El Erry. The El-AIR-ee is not right.

I know a lot of Eleris.

Phoebesgift · 28/01/2021 20:47

Jumpalicious · 28/01/2021 21:03

Thanks @KirstenBlest!!

CaffiSaliMali · 28/01/2021 22:28

Yes Eleri is Elle-erry, to rhyme with Terry and Kerry.

diamondchocolatestick · 02/02/2021 10:26

Nerys - sister name to Carys

What about Caelinn? Too obscure?

OP posts:
Cpl654321 · 05/02/2021 08:26

How do you pronounce Caelinn?

Just to do a further correction on Caoimhe where I'm from its def pronounced Quee-vah and not Key-va

WashableVelvet · 05/02/2021 08:40

Realistically, either Kay- or (less likely) Key-. Not Quey- round here. I want to go for something where we’re as happy with the pronunciation it’ll actually get at nursery etc, as with the ‘correct’ pronunciation. Def wouldn’t spell it Caoilfhionn 😂

Eg Anwen would be pronounced Anwun here but that’s ok with me. Whereas Bethan would be Beffun, which...nope!
