I am not sure if it would bother you but the name Mallory means unfortunate or unlucky. It was on our list until that put me off. Not everyone cares about name meanings though.

Heidi and Eleanor are both lovely.

AnxiousAnnie86 · 28/01/2021 13:04

@Champy87 oh noooo I didn't know that!! X

I loooooove both Heidi and Mallory 😍 both been on our list but Mal does put me off 😔 another option might be Ellery which I’ve seen before, ties in with Eleanor too? There is Eleri too which I have a feeling might be anglicised Welsh? Not sure.

partyatthepalace · 28/01/2021 13:26

Eleanor is a great classic, and Ellie, Ella and Nell are all nice short forms. Elowen, Eloise, Eliza, Leonora are others in this space.

Mallory just sounds made up to me and I don’t like Heidi (I associate with it the 70s for some reason.)

They are all quite different names so slightly hard to make other suggestions, but Lois, Marianne, Juliet, Stella, Seren, Robin, Serena are some other nice names!

AnxiousAnnie86 · 28/01/2021 14:04

@partyatthepalace I love Lois and seren! Husband doesn't like them! I also really like Robyn! But he says it's a boys name!!! He never likes any names!

partyatthepalace · 28/01/2021 14:50

Aha! - I think Robin is moving over to being more of a girls’ than a boys name, bit like Rowan - but anyway it’s definitely unisex. I love Lois - really underused - can he not be persuaded?!

Few more thoughts - Clara, Caitlin, Ffion, Rowan, Pippa (as nn for Philippa), Ines, Lauren, Aisling (Ash-linn), Juno, Tessa, Jasmine, Iris, Kristen, Roslyn, Thora, Freya

Eleri is the Welsh form of Hilary, and is pronounced El-erry, rhymes with Kerry.

PolarnOPirate · 28/01/2021 17:07

@KirstenBlest

Good to know! I love it. When I was considering naming my son Evan I had mumsnetters pile on saying there is no E in welsh and so Evan is not a truly welsh name, it should be Ifan. Which is fine as we're not welsh either Grin
Himawarigirl · 28/01/2021 17:17

I love the sound of Mallory but the meaning put me off.

Fivemoreminutes1 · 28/01/2021 18:07

Saskia
Claudia
Thea
Cecily
Meredith
Eliza
Francesca

KirstenBlest · 28/01/2021 18:57

@PolarnOPirate, Evan is the anglicised form of Ifan. Welsh does have the letter E but not V. F always gives a V sound. FF is a separate letter.

Other anglicised Welsh names that can be used as first names are Vaughan (Fychan) and Lloyd (Llwyd). David is a good name.

Evan is nice.

AnxiousAnnie86 · 28/01/2021 19:38

The middle name would be Amelia,

We also like Ellery x

PolarnOPirate · 28/01/2021 20:08

Ohhhhhh yes it must have been the V I was thinking of then. Find it so interesting!!

KirstenBlest · 28/01/2021 20:38

There is no J, K, Q, V or Z, but there are letters that are not in the English alphabet - Ch, Dd, Ff, Ng, Ll, Ph, Rh, and Th.

Rhys doesn't have an R in it, Ffion doesn't have an f in it, Angharad doesn't start with An, Dafydd doesn't end with a d.

A, E, I, O, U, W, Y and sometimes H are vowels. A name like Gwyn or Bryn does include a vowel.

Heidi Amelia is nice.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 29/01/2021 02:39

Of your 3 choices, I like Eleanor best despite its popularity. It's very elegant and strong, with some great namesakes and has lots of nn options so she can chose whatever suits her personality best if she wants to (Nell, Leni, Ella, Elle, Ellie, Nora etc). Imo Mallory and Heidi can't compare to the classic feeling Eleanor has.

DramaAlpaca · 29/01/2021 03:15

They are very different styles.

Mallory is very American, Heidi is one of those sweetly twee names, Eleanor is classic and elegant.

The only one I like is Eleanor.

Fivemoreminutes1 · 29/01/2021 06:21

I like Eleanor, but it’s a mouthful with Amelia

How about Elodie or Elara?

MercyBodle · 29/01/2021 08:39

I love Eleanor. Traditional, and lots of good nicknames
Ellery and Mallory feel very modern in comparison, and Mallory just makes me think of the 1980s American sitcom. I dislike Heidi, and find it quite insubstantial compared with the others.

Sexnotgender · 29/01/2021 09:54

Love Eleanor but DH doesn’t 😫

Our girls list is:
Joy
Julia
Anna
Penelope
Lilian
Helen

AnxiousAnnie86 · 29/01/2021 10:10

I think Eleanor is my favourite, and I do love the nicknames that can come from it, I just didn't know if Eleanor Amelia was too much? Amelia is a must as a middle name x

OP posts:
Sexnotgender · 29/01/2021 11:07

It is a bit of a mouthful. How often would you say her full name though.

AnxiousAnnie86 · 29/01/2021 11:12

@Sexnotgender yeah that's what I was thinking! It's not like it's hyphenated! Hmm will give it some thought! X
