Liliana... is it going to be a nuisance?

Hey,

Our baby is due in 3 weeks and we are still debating on names!!

Grandma was called Lillian and the baby is due on her birthday so we wanted to include her name somehow.

We like the name Liliana as its a bit different to Lily and I feel Lilia would possibly get misheard as Lydia. But I am just a bit concerned she will spend all her life either spelling or pronouncing it to people.

What's your opinion?

Probably. My name is a bit like that so I shortened it ASAP.

Firebird83 · 27/01/2021 21:34

I think it’s fine.

LaMariposa · 27/01/2021 21:35

I’ve got a friend with that name. She gets called Lily.

katy1213 · 27/01/2021 21:35

Doubt she'll spend her life explaining it - she'll just change it as soon as she can.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 27/01/2021 22:01

Liliana isn't that unusual and is a pretty name, but because it's also quite long/frilly, I suspect many people will just shorten it to the more popular Lily anyway.

I really love the name Lilia but I think whatever Lily variant you use (whether Lilia, Lilian or Liliana) she is going to have to spell it anyway ie. " Is it 1 or 2 L's in the middle?". So imo you might as well either chose whatever version you like best, or honour Grandma by using Lillian as the middle name and chose a different first name.

partyatthepalace · 27/01/2021 23:22

Tis very frilly

What’s wrong with Lillian?

littlemisslozza · 27/01/2021 23:23

I think it'll get shortened quite quickly. Personally I prefer Lily or Lilia.

Pieceofpurplesky · 28/01/2021 00:49

Liliana is gorgeous. Nicknames develop and won't necessarily be Lily. Think Lils, Ana, Yana ...

ArosAdraDrosDolig · 28/01/2021 00:53

I know a ten year old Liliana and it’s never shortened. I think it’s lovely and not so unusual that people won’t know how to say or spell it.

Prianiki · 28/01/2021 03:29

Liliana is a fairly well-known a name, no? I know two. I doubt your daughter will have to correct too many people on the spelling or pronunciation. Beautiful choice.

bourbonne · 28/01/2021 09:09

I don't see why it would be a particularly difficult name to bear. It is a bit frilly. I do think she will be known as Lil once she's older. Which is not a bad thing.

Synchrony · 28/01/2021 09:52

I don't see that Liliana is that hard to pronounce, or to spell (other than clarifying one or two 'l's, and I agree with a pp that that would be a risk with Lillian and Lily too). I think it's a nice name.

The only Lilia I know of is Lilia who used to be on Strictly, and it never occurred to me to mishear her name as Lydia. It was obviously Lilia to me. Maybe overthinking that concern a bit?

mackvic4 · 28/01/2021 10:48

think that its a lovely name and nicknames are inevitable

formerbabe · 28/01/2021 10:49

My dc has a friend called Liliana...seems to be issue free and the kids don't shorten it.

DragonPoop · 28/01/2021 10:50

I prefer Lillian or just Lily to Lilliana

trevthecat · 28/01/2021 11:23

I love it. I wouldn't shorten it. I have a name that is 2 common names made into one name - think along the lines of sarah-louise but mine isn't hyphened. People ask if I have a shortened name, I always just say no. That's my name!

KirstenBlest · 28/01/2021 11:24

Lily is so much nicer.

NoSquirrels · 28/01/2021 11:26

I'd use Lillian as a middle name. (Probably not too helpful an answer!)

Mummytoalmost3 · 28/01/2021 11:49

It’s beautiful. We like Lily but may consider using Liliana, as there is more nicknames. She can be Lily, Anna or Lila

KirstenBlest · 28/01/2021 12:16

@Mummytoalmost3, the nicknames you suggest are mainstream names in themselves. I'd say Liliana as Lily-AH-na, so I don't see how you get Anna or Lila.
If you say Liliana as Lily-Anna, people will spell it Lilianna.

OneKeyAtATime · 28/01/2021 12:21

Lots of lilianas round here so I doubt people would struggle with the name but she may have to resort to a nickname, initials etc

PrimeraVez · 28/01/2021 12:27

It's really frilly and I can imagine it getting shortened to Lily or even Lil. We have friends with a Lilia, and even she often gets referred to as Lily or Lil.

Mummytoalmost3 · 28/01/2021 13:12

Not really, nicknames can be anything you want. There’s no rules.

It’s a lovely name either way.

TerriblyTiiiired · 28/01/2021 13:17

It’s lovely and not really a confusing or outlandish choice! Much more interesting than Lily. I like it.

bourbonne · 28/01/2021 13:39

@Mummytoalmost3 a nickname can be anything, but unintuitive nicknames normally come about naturally. If you said "Her name's Liliana" (rhyming with banana) "but we call her Anna", I'd just think "Why?". You might as well say "but we call her Barbara" or "Suzanne".
