No to Livia as everyone will hear Olivia, it will drive you nuts.

I love Clelia as it also makes me think of the character in Margaret Drabble’s Jerusalem The Golden. However I agree that the response on here probably tells you that you shouldn’t use it!

Lavinia - I know one - lovely. Goes by Vinnie. I would think that the ‘Lav’ association isn’t a problem once you’re out of the schoolyard, I would choose this.

Virginia - tobacco, American sounding (maybe because of Virginia Andrews) - not nice at all!

How about Sabina?

TinyCake · 06/02/2021 09:39

Livia - you like Olivia but want to be different.
Clelia - people are going to mistype it as Celia in emails when she is older but I like it.
Lavinia - I like this but kids will probably call her Lav.
Virginia - she'll get teased for this one :(

I like Livia and Clelia, but I do find the latter slightly difficult to say — it’s the ‘Cl’ followed by another ‘l’. I liked the character in La Chartreuse de Parme. (Also, I have on several occasions been misidentified as an Irish soap actress called Clelia Murphy.)

LolaSmiles · 06/02/2021 16:20

Livia - like Olivia without the O
Clelia - my guess would have been cleh-lie-a, which is so far from how you've said it's pronounced.
Lavinia - any name with lav at the start makes me think of lavatory
Virginia - US states

rawalpindithelabrador · 06/02/2021 16:22

The tombstones of women who were born in the early 20th century.

MrsSchadenfreude · 06/02/2021 16:46

Love Livia
I used to work with a Clelia, who was an utter pain in the arse (and hideously posh) so this is a big no from me.
Lavinia - know two, both lovely.
Virginia - had a childhood friend called Virginia (Ginny) who died young. Like the name, also Ginny is a good shortening.

Anoisagusaris · 06/02/2021 16:52

Livia - I would think it’s short for Olivia. Both are nice.

Clelia- I’ve only heard of one person with this name. I like the sound of it but would imagine people would presume it’s Celia misspelt when reading it.

Lavinia- again I’ve only heard of one person with this name. Lavinia Kerwick was the first rape victim in Ireland to waive her right to anonymity. Amazing brave woman.

Onlinedilema · 07/02/2021 11:15

Livia- id assume a Nick name for Olivia.
Celia - never heard of it.
Lavinia- a Baltic nation
Virginia- Virginia Wade

Our Italian family girls mostly have names that Brits can pronounce pretty easily, including Marina, Fiammetta, Orlanda, Domitilla, Lucrezia, Benedetta, Amadea, and the rather beautiful medieval Parisina. Also one that is well known here is the name Lord Byron gave his daughter, Allegra, which I think was used more in the UK and US until gaining in popularity over the last few years in Italy. Just a few more ideas for you. I know what you mean about Italian names beginning with Gi - we have a Giuliana who is driven crazy by the way non-Italians say her name!

Lemur12 · 30/05/2021 05:27

Livia - Like it. Also like Liv, but think both will seem like nicknames for Olivia, even though they're not.
Clelia - Celia, with a typo
Lavinia - character from an Agatha Christie novel. Upper class, stuffy...
Virginia - American state, Elizabeth I, virginity

TatianaBis · 30/05/2021 06:38

Livia - love. Only insular people will confuse with Olivia.

Clelia - does not work in the UK.

Lavinia - joke dated name. Reminds me of Joyce Grenfell. “Lavinia don’t copy him”

Virginia - also very dated. Invites virgin jokes. (Presumably why not used any more).

Italian names I like -

Cosima - old lady name in Italy but very chic here.
Raffaella
Serafina
Chiara
Viola

Livia is the best for me, I love the way it sounds in Italian, have a good friend with that name, and Commissario Montalbano’s girlfriend was called Livia.
Other favourites are Alexandra, Isabella, and Iolanda.
Good luck, OP, I also chanaged my name to fit my background, and have never regretted it!

UseOfWeapons · 30/05/2021 07:26

Bloody autocorrect, Alessandra!

ifigoup · 30/05/2021 07:49

Livia - vagina
Clelia - clitoris
Lavinia - Miss Marple character
Virginia - beautiful, classic, understated
