I've always loved Nina and wanted a nature name for the middle however DH is Welsh and has just suggested Seren, what do you think? And can anyone suggest boys names please that we might like based on liking Nina Seren for girls?

I like it, it flows nicely with Nina.

Seren is a modern Welsh name - it's the word for star used as a name. The Cornish have the related Steren.

A common middle name for girls in Wales is Haf (summer) which goes nicely with Nina IMO. Some other Welsh names:

Eira (snow)
Eirys (Iris, pron. EY-riss - ey as in hey)
Eirlys (snowdrop)
Enfys (rainbow)
Ffion (foxglove)
Tesni (the warmth from the sun)
Nia
Mali
Mari
Alys
Carys

Some Welsh boys names:

Owen
Harri
Osian
Tomos
Macsen
Dylan
Rhys
Rhodri
Aneirin/Aneurin
Taliesin
Idris
Emrys

Looove it! I'm useless at boys names. Jasper? Felix? Caleb? Jude? Oscar? Isaac? Rudy?

My first thought was
NeeNah Siren but that might be just me.

givememarmite · 26/01/2021 11:38

My DD is Mina and we were very keen on Seren as a middle name I think they go very well, but we're not in the UK and the pronunciation was too much of an issue. (We went with Elin in the end and very happy with it, sure Nina would go nicely too 😉)

The boys list was a bit harder, but Rhys, Dylan and Osian were my faves.

Sounds good together.

Thank you! I hadn't even thought of 'NeeNah Siren' so that's something to think about, I find boys names so much harder but I do like Oscar and Isaac!

Sorry, I also thought NeeNah Siren.

iwontfloaatt · 26/01/2021 13:16

Yep. "Nee-naw siren" was my first thought too.

SoupDragon · 26/01/2021 13:20

I think it's lovely. NeeNah Siren never crossed my mind.

Sirens don't really go Neenaw any more though 🙁 oh for the good old days...

Love Seren

Think Nina is a bit nothing-y, so I’d flip it

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 26/01/2021 22:46

I love Nina - a simple, well known but not overused name that suits all ages (reminds me of the more popular Anna/Anya in style).

Seren is beautiful too, but a bit more subject to trends/fashions. Or you could use the similar sounding Welsh (but more classic/traditional) Gwen as the middle?

You could also consider Nia instead of Nina if you want to go more Welsh for the first name? (and because of it's similarity to popular Mia it's easy to use in England).

Evan and Owen work well with Nina in style to me if you want to go the Welsh (but not too obviously) for boys route.

Other options to fit with Nina could be Max/Maxim, Marcus, Rufus, Henry, Lucas/Lucian, Felix, Elias, Louis, Toby/Tobias, Adam, Gabriel (I think you need to stay short and international sounding to fit with Nina).

Seren is my DD middle name. Never had any pronounciation issues and definitely doesn’t sound like siren.

Ellada19 · 27/01/2021 06:17

I’ve only met one other Nina. It’s very pretty & unique. Great choice! I think Nina Seren sounds nice. I’m not too fussy about middle names because I don’t even really know the middle names of any of my kid’s friends. I like that you’re choosing a name from your child’s culture. Having a cultural connection in the name is very powerful.

There are lots of great welsh boys names.
If it’s a boy I like:
Tristan
Morgan
Ellis
Bran
Griff

Thank you, I appreciate the feedback! I'm wondering how many times she would actually be called by her first and middle name together and if it matters that it potentially sounds like NeeNah Siren!
