Do you like the French name Lilou?

cheapskatemum · 23/01/2021 23:34

I’m sorry, but it reminds me of Lilo Lil

Apachepony · 23/01/2021 23:36

Yes, I like it, and I think more current than most of the names that would be mentioned here if asked for a french name.

LawnFever · 23/01/2021 23:36

I’ve never heard of it, sorry but in English I read it like Lilo I don’t think it translates well

stickygotstuck · 23/01/2021 23:38

Like it.

Reminds me of The Fifth Element though, if it matters.

OwlLovesTea · 23/01/2021 23:38

Awful. Like Lilo

Eleonorex · 23/01/2021 23:39

No, it is pronounced Lilú

kingkuta · 23/01/2021 23:39

God no. She'd get called Lilo. Would be awful for her growing up

Monkeytennis97 · 23/01/2021 23:39

Lilo Lil

Sorry

kingkuta · 23/01/2021 23:40

Unless you actually live in France?

Pumpkinstace · 23/01/2021 23:41

I know someone with a child named lilu.

Named after the 5th element.

She's about 10.

BackforGood · 23/01/2021 23:42

If the family is French, I would just assume it was something to get used to, like all the names from all the different countries that families are from.

If the family were English (and you are in England - I totally realise there are people on here the World over, even though it is a majority UK site) then I don't really like it.

ProudAuntie76 · 23/01/2021 23:43

Not sure how to pronounce it. It’s a bit twee for me too. Reminds me of Lilo and Stitch.

I’m not keen on names that sound like they should be nicknames or pet names - ie Lulu, Fifi, Gigi. I always think it will be difficult for that child to be taken seriously as an adult.

SionnachRua · 23/01/2021 23:44

Would also think of the 5th element. I don't feel it's a very current reference though.

Remaker · 23/01/2021 23:48

My first thought was Lilo Lil, sorry.

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 23/01/2021 23:51

Thank you @Pumpkinstace I was desperately searching my brain for the name of the film, I could see it and hear the character saying lilu but couldn't remember what the film was called.

Yeah OP it reminds me of The 5th Element

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 24/01/2021 00:01

Do you live in a French speaking country (or have a French Surname)? I think otherwise it could be quite unusual and even a bit cute sounding. But Lilou is pretty and would make an adorable nn for a girl with the first name Lily/Lilia/Lilian and the middle name Louise/Louisa/Lucy/Lucia.

partyatthepalace · 24/01/2021 00:33

If you were naming a small dog or a feminine hygiene product then yes. A person - no.

Sorry to be so blunt OP but that is a shocker. Use it as a nn if you insist but foe heavens sake call her something that is a proper name or at least sounds like one.

buttons101 · 24/01/2021 00:37

Cute as a nickname but I also immediately thought of the Fifth Element.

ReachedTheEndofCake · 24/01/2021 03:36

Also The 5th Element, and can’t help but say it exactly as Mila does for the film.

DramaAlpaca · 24/01/2021 04:15

It's a traditional French diminutive for Marie-Louise I think. It's not a given name in itself. Unless you're naming a little terrier or something. Then it's cute.

notafanoftheman · 25/01/2021 11:54

It’s a super trendy hipster baby name in France right now.

StacySoloman · 25/01/2021 11:55

I like it.

bourbonne · 25/01/2021 12:59

Pretty (if insubstantial) in French but awful in English. I knew a family with a little Lilou, I think one parent was French-speaking, but the other parent had a broad Yorkshire accent and it just sounded silly.

Also it will be confused with Lila, Lola, Lulu etc.

Bunchup · 25/01/2021 13:01

Are you French? Confused

MindGrapes · 25/01/2021 13:02

Would not be able to stop thinking MULTIPASS
