SS name

I really like the name Sophie if I have a girl, but my surname starts with Sh - let's pretend it's Shoulder. I.e. Sophie Shoulder

I'm not keen on alliterative sounding names but although these start with the same letter the sounds are different.

However my concerns are:

  1. does it still sound/look too 'matchy' / alliterative esp as both have an h in too
  2. do the different S sounds make it clumsy to say?
  3. Do the initials SS have a negative connotation or am I over thinking?

An alternative I'm considering is Rose/Rosie to avoid these issues but on its own I like Sophie more.

I like it, just needs a long middle name.

Sophie Elizabeth Shoulder
Sophie Rosamund Shoulder

SummaLuvin · 23/01/2021 15:57

I really don't think it's a problem. Surnames are only an issue in the below three cases IMO.

  1. the name sounds strange when said in full (e.g. Amber Boon)
  2. initials spell something rude out (e.g. A.S.S)
  3. the first name is almost the same (e.g. Patricia Patrick, David Davis...)

Otherwise crack on with what you like.

I think Sophie Sh.... sounds ok, does roll off tongue different to Sophie Sa, Si or So for example.

If you like it go with it, maybe a middle name just to break
It up a bit.

BravoWhiskey · 23/01/2021 16:03

My surname starts with S too and I would not use an S first name, sorry.

Middle name does break it up but that's not used day to day

Rosie is lovely!

partyatthepalace · 23/01/2021 16:06

Absolutely fine. Nice name.

SmeleanorSmellstrop · 23/01/2021 16:18

Well yeah SS makes me think of the SS which is obvs a negative connotation but chuck a middle name in there and you'll be fine

Firebird83 · 23/01/2021 16:34

Sophie with a Sh sounding surname makes me think of Sophie Scholl, which isn’t a bad association.

BigGlasses · 23/01/2021 17:31

My name is something similar to Sadie Sharp, and my brother is Scott Sharp. My work colleague Sarah Sawicki. None of us have have had any problems with the SS initials (although we do have middle names too) . I would say go for it.

MimiDaisy11 · 23/01/2021 17:41

My sister has the initials SS and no one, that I'm aware, has said anything. She doesn't even have a middle name - I think my parents just didn't think about it. It's not really something to be bullied about as by the time you're at the age to learn about something like that you're past the stage of thinking about what people's initials are to mock them. I've never thought about my friends or colleagues initials.

daisypond · 23/01/2021 18:07

Well, yes, of course SS has negative connotations! But in this case, so removed from that context, I think it’s fine.

niknakpak · 23/01/2021 19:36

I think it's fine. I do love Rosie though as I have one!

Turtleoo · 23/01/2021 19:54

Thanks everyone. Yes there will definitely be a middle name too, but most of the time you don't use it so I want the name to work without it as well.

Good to hear of some other examples - and they all sound perfectly good names to me, so that's reassuring :)

Sophie Shoulder isn't alliterative, but Sharon Shoulder or Sophie Smith would be.

Middle names are hardly ever used but initials are.

My husbands initials are SS. He has a middle name but rarely uses it. No one has ever said anything as far as I know. Never even thought about it

umpteennamechanges · 25/01/2021 00:42

I have the initials SS and not once in my life has anyone (even me!) made the association with Nazis.

You're massively overthinking!

BoJingle · 26/01/2021 21:17

My initials are SS and this is the first time I've actually associated my initials with the SS 😂

grandmasterstitch · 26/01/2021 23:04

I'm having the same dilemma. Surname begins with a W and we love Winifred but can't decide if it's just a bit much!

Ellada19 · 27/01/2021 07:07

Hmmm...
I would say don’t get hung up on “rules” and just pick the name you like best. If Sophie is your favourite name don’t worry about Aliteration.
That said, if you like both equally I would go with Rosie or Rose. Only because Sophie or Sophia have been in the top 10 girl names for a decade and there are a lot around... although definitely less Sophies than Sophias.

Turtleoo · 27/01/2021 20:05

I just checked out the top names and hadn't realised Sophie was on there! That does put me off a bit. My favourite boy's name has been Oliver since I was young but I didn't want to use it when I had my son as it's been number one for ages
