Struggling for a girls name

Mcboo5 · 22/01/2021 09:14

Due to have Dd3 this year and we are really struggling for girls names. I just can't seem to settle on anything. On our favourites list so far are Molly, Rowan and Luella. Any thoughts on these or other suggestions would be very much appreciated. Smile

Ahh it's difficult is t it because I can see all the positive and negatives for them all. I forgot another one I liked was Bronte any thoughts?

Bronte is try-hard. I can see the appeal but I wouldn't use it. Use it for a pet instead.

Your names are nice @Mcboo5 but very varied in terms of popularity - is popularity a factor for you or not? Because if it is, I'd avoid names that are trending like Rowan/Roman etc. They shoot up the charts each year and whilst I used to like them, now feel they've lost their appeal and shine. Roman/ Rowan/ Rory/ Ronnie/ Reuben all in the top one hundred and all rising.
Molly is falling down the top one-hundred so that would be a good choice as it's increasingly underused.
Bronte and Louella are very rare and outside the top one-thousand names in the charts, which suggests to me you're looking for a name that's a bit different? I like both of these options.

How about a name like Cressida ? Roxanna or Roxanne?

@Flymetothestars hmm I guess I would rather not have something too popular or over used. My Dd1's name is in the 90's of top hundred names and Dd2 is not in the top 200.
Whenever I look at the charts for girls names on different sites Rowan doesn't seem to be too popular but maybe I'm not looking at the same ones as everyone else.
I really do appreciate all the suggestions though. Xx

@Mcboo5 you need to look at the ONS official government figures. Some websites produce their own name charts/lists based on internet searches on their website etc but those lists bear no relation to the numbers of babies with those names. The ONS figures are the official registered birth names that parents have registered and are released in the summer every year for the previous year. So that list is the one to rely on as it's based on the actual official registrations.

The best site to use is Dark Greener as that uses the official government statistics over the last 25 years and plots it all on a graph for you. I assume you've already used the website but if not I'll put the links below. If you'd rather avoid anything too popular then it's best to avoid the top 100 of if not at least pick a name that has plateaued or is decreasing in numbers (like Molly) rather than one that is sharply rising (like Roman, Rowan)

You might be interested to put your other children names into the search bar on dark greener and you can see whether they are rising or falling:

Bronte is one of my guilty pleasure names - it's very pretty and I love the writers but I struggle with the Brontosaurus thing and that apparently it is considered downmarket in some countries.

Molly is okay, just a bit nicknamey. Rowan is lovely but will meet lots of boys with her name. Luella is not so good (quite hillbilly sounding imo).

Similar sounding suggestions to your choices - Bryony, Louisa, Lucia/Lucilla, Rosalie, Coralie, Sylvie, Wren, Tamsin, Jessamy/Jessamine.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 22/01/2021 18:51

Oh, and Eden.

Mcboo5 · 22/01/2021 18:52

@Flymetothestars wow that's brilliant thank you. I've not used those sites before so will be good to look at something more official.

I know a few Rowans and love the name but all boys so it's a no from me. Rowenna is a similar girls name. Don't really like Molly, it just doesn't seem like an adult's name. And wouldn't know how to pronounce Luella. I'm being so unhelpful, sorry.

I like Rowan the best though I much prefer Rowena.
Sorry but I find Molly humdrum but I love Polly.
I really dislike Luella. It reminds me of Sue-Ellen and all those deep South names.
My suggestions would be:
Elspeth
Hester
Polly
Rowena
Tabitha
Meredith
Merryn
Constance
Cecily

NameChange84 · 22/01/2021 22:44

I prefer Rowenna (not Rowena though) to Rowan.

Hazel is nice and underused
Briony
Bethan
I love the Lowenna suggestion
Robyn
Merryn

Blursula · 23/01/2021 04:07

I think Bronte is lovely. Briar is another name that’s not dissimilar and you don’t hear much of.

Rowan I find much nicer on a girl actually.

Luella I really dislike - I imagine it written as Lou-Ella which really puts me off. Ella is nice though.

MercyBodle · 23/01/2021 04:09

I love Bronte, and I like Molly and Rowan. I don't like Luella and Mariella.

I like Gabriella, but otherwise not keen on ella ending names. Bronte and Rowan make me think of Tamsin.

Mcboo5 · 23/01/2021 09:55

I think Bronte and Rowen are still the favourites. But I have added some from the suggestions to my list for Dh to have a peruse of. Thank you to everyone who has replied. My dh gets fed up talking about names but I could chat about them all day! 😂

*That should be Rowan sorry.

Flymetothestars · 23/01/2021 13:12

Nice choices @Mcboo5 I prefer Bronte as it's a bit different and I like it's meaning. In 2019 there was only 30 babies born named Bronte compared with 830 babies named Rowan (girls + boys). So Rowan is nearly thirty times more common. Both nice though.

Mcboo5 · 23/01/2021 13:38

Thanks @Flymetothestars it's been an education! 🤓 From what I've read Bronte means thunder right?

OP posts:
partyatthepalace · 23/01/2021 23:01

I like Luella, it’s v calm sounding, also Serena, Cassia, Fenella in this space.

Like Rowan but there are a lot of them - otherwise Robin, Briar, Roslyn, Sorrel, Lauren, Lois, Ines, Thora, Erin

Molly is cute also - but prefer the less popular Polly, also like Nancy in this space

They are three very different names you got there!

CoffeeRunner · 23/01/2021 23:06

DDs middle names are Louisa Eliza. When she was younger she couldn’t say them so used to say Luella Grin.

Molly is nice. Also Polly.

Rowan is altogether more serious. A totally different vibe.

I would say Molly.

ProudAuntie76 · 23/01/2021 23:07

How will you pronounce Bronte?

Bront-ay or Bront-ee?

I’ve heard both. You might need to keep correcting people.

Mcboo5 · 24/01/2021 00:11

@partyatthepalace they certainly are different sounding. I guess just like having the variety of options.
