Anything hyphenated, the -lou -may -rae - belle ones most of all.

CourgettiSpaghetti · 21/01/2021 11:16

Felicity
Jemima
Clarissa
Josephine

Calmondeck · 21/01/2021 11:43

Agree with @LittleGwyneth that the -Lou, -Mae additions make names far too frilly for me. Emmy-Lou, Gracie-Mae etc.

A lot of ie/y ending names sound too frilly IMO: Macy, Lacy, Evie, etc

KirstenBlest · 21/01/2021 11:49

Anything with two syllables or more that has silent letters.
Vivien - K, Vivienne - a bit frilly
Isabelle, Annabelle - both frilly

Names that have an ee sound in, or seem just a pile of vowels.
Ameeeeelia
Aureeeeelia
Elodie
Ottilie

Names that are OK but are spoilt by adding another syllable to.
Julia - fine, Juliana - frilly
Lilian - fine, Liliana - frilly
Georgina - fine, Georgiana - frilly

I came here to say Felicity but someone got there before me.

Jemima
anything with a hyphen

ParisJeTAime · 21/01/2021 12:08

Arabella
Amelia / Emilia
Rosabella
Aurelia

Why do you ask? Are these names you like or names you are seeking to avoid? Some people love the frill! I'm not entirely against it myself, although I probably wouldn't choose one of the ones I've mentioned.

Anything ending in -issa or -cilla or -elia such as Larissa or Priscilla or Cordelia.

Most names with 4 syllables or more.

Edenember · 21/01/2021 15:28

Ottilie, Romilly... almost anything with the ‘illy’ sound shared with frilly (but only polysyllabic ones for some reason.) Also names like Aurelia, Emilia. I like the name Cecily and it would have a family connection but the frilly thing puts me off. However I love Arrietty, one of the very frilliest names of all... makes no sense.

VanillaAndOrange · 21/01/2021 18:38

Melissa, Jessica, Arabella, Belinda, Emmeline, Gabriella, Tiffany

...and for older people, Cynthia!

sleepingfox · 21/01/2021 19:02

Evie, Tilly, Daisy, Annabelle, Millie, Isabella, Lacey, Bella.

EdgeOfACoin · 21/01/2021 19:05

All the suffragettes had frilly names - Emmeline, Christabel, Sylvia and Millicent to name a few.

I don't mind a bit of frill but I dislike names that are sweet on a baby but which seem insubstantial on an adult (Daisy, Minnie, Poppy, Flossie, Honey, Posy.)

-elle where - el would do eg Isabelle/Isabel
-elia (but Celia isn't)
-illy (but Romilly isn't)
-illie
-ette (but Bette isn't)

Melissa, Jessica, Arabella, Belinda, Emmeline, Gabriella, Tiffany - these

Hyphens

Sophia is fussy but Maria isn't

SnottyLottie · 21/01/2021 19:16

My initial thoughts were Anastasia and Arabella

Mynextname · 21/01/2021 19:20

Felicity was the first name that came to mind. Nothing wrong with frilly names as long as they suit adults too.

Changethetoner · 21/01/2021 19:22

Francesca
Lily
Lucy
Isabella

marthastew · 21/01/2021 19:24

Both my daughters have sweet frou frou frilly names but they are not at all frilly by nature. Battlers both of them. Should have called them Boudicca or Brunhilda or something.

intheshallows · 21/01/2021 19:25

Elodie

shiningstar2 · 21/01/2021 19:29

Mandy and Wendy. Always seem to me names chosen because they sound cute for little girls.

trifleandbaileys · 21/01/2021 19:30

My daughters name is on here, and a few other names that were on my list. I obviously like frilly names Grin

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 21/01/2021 19:36

I quite like "frilly" names so this isn't a criticism, but I would say any name of 3 or more syllables with lots of vowels but few strong consonants can sound frilly.

For example I love the name Christabel - and I think of it as a strong name as it reminds me of the suffragette and the Coleridge heroine, but objectively it does sound a bit frilly (like Tinkabel the fairy!).

BrandoraPaithwaite · 21/01/2021 19:38

Amelie, Amelia etc. Agree with PP about vowel pile ups being frilly.

I see the name Ottilie mentioned on MN loads but never ever hear it in real life. And I live in a naice twee town with a crusty element too. Where are the actual Ottilies?

bridgetreilly · 21/01/2021 19:42
