Is this a nice name? Said Aderleen.

I don't like it at all. Madeleine is much nicer.

BareFacedLila · 21/01/2021 13:43

I love it but think I would go for Adelina as a tribute to your relative. It's a bit more obvious how you pronounce it and it still sounds really pretty.

ParisJeTAime · 21/01/2021 13:47

I have only ever heard it pronounced ad-uh-line, which I like a lot.

Ad-uh-leen I am less keen on and I think you will get people pronouncing it the more common / obvious way.

ParisJeTAime · 21/01/2021 13:48

I speak French, but am not a native speaker. English is my first language and I would naturally say Ad-uh-line.

Have you heard what people do to Amelie and Elodie in our British accents Wink?! Don't do it if you want the French pronunciation imo.

KirstenBlest · 21/01/2021 13:55

Amélie and Élodie are pretty in a french accent. Both seem to have declined in popularity.
Amelie and Elodie sound plain in a british accent.

I guess Jacqueline is pretty in a french accent, but not in a british one.

ParisJeTAime · 21/01/2021 13:57

Agree re Jacqueline as well - beautiful in a French accent! Not my cup of tea in a British accent.

KirstenBlest · 21/01/2021 14:00

I don't mind Jacqueline pronounced Jacklin, probably because I know a few. I know a Stéphanie who objects to being called Steffuny. I can't say I blame her.

@Thisonemaybe

Thanks, yes it was the name of an old (French) relative. I had wondered that about the pronunciation with the film. I am a bit concerned that everyone will think she doesn't know how to say her own name?!
The film is American. They pronounce it the American way. Your pronunciation is correct. Aderleen
Fufumuji · 21/01/2021 16:45

Your pronunciation is correct

Only in France. Almost all English speakers will say Adda-line (lyne).

I would never use a pronounciation that the vast majority will get "wrong".

It is a name of french origin so should be pronounced correctly. It is not 'wrong'. The English are fantastic at bastardising and butchering beautiful names and words from other countries, languages and cultures. The correct pronunciation is still from the country of origin. Not the English version. Not everyone is English or an 'English speaker'.
DeusEx · 21/01/2021 17:50

Adda-line is lovely. That’s the only way I’ve heard it pronounced so surprised at the other options!

DeusEx · 21/01/2021 17:51

If you wanted it more like adda-lin, maybe consider Adalind - more obviously pronunciation. But either are lovely I think.

partyatthepalace · 21/01/2021 20:16

It reminds me of Adder snakes so no.

Adelaide is nice, or Adela?

Adelais · 21/01/2021 22:34

I love it and would pronounce it Adder Lyne.
It was on our list for dd who was born last year but then I heard of a few babies born with the name which made me worry it was becoming popular.

CloudPop · 21/01/2021 22:35

I know a lovely Adeline. Go for it.

HettieMills · 21/01/2021 22:37

It's pronounced Adda line. My sister's name.

Thisonemaybe · 23/01/2021 14:13

Thanks for all your comments. Nice to hear a lot of people like it Smile

I know two Adeline’s and they both pronounce it Adda-Line (similar to Caroline) so I would assume that would be the correct pronunciation. I don’t really like the way you would want it pronounced

LizzieAnt · 23/01/2021 23:09

I'd pronounce it Ada-leen. I'm in Ireland where Madeline is usually pronounced Mad-uh-leen so that seems the more natural pronunciation to me. It's lovely, but I appreciate you may have difficulty getting the pronunciation you wish in the UK. I'm not such a fan of the Ada-line pronunciation.

FinallyHere · 24/01/2021 11:12

Indeed, it was my mother's name, spelt Adeline and pronounced Ad-a-leen

LizzieAnt · 24/01/2021 12:01

Yes, I think the 'leen' pronunciation was certainly from the original French in both Adeline and Madeline. The 'lyne' pronunciation is newer, though it's been around a good while now too - how long depends where you live really.
