Leonora

What do people think of Leonora? I quite like the option of Leo - quite like the boy nickname for a girl - but also Nora (the more feminine sounding option).

I know Leo is quite popular for boys at the moment but don't know any Leonora's.

Anything else in a similar vein I should consider?

I love it. Can't think of anything similar though. Apart from Elora, the baby in the film Willow!

SmeleanorSmellstrop · 19/01/2021 21:31

Loooove Leonora but I just couldn't convince DH it was usable 😒 so many nickname options... I saw Leo, Nell, Leni and Nora all mentioned on baby name boards when i obsessively stalked this name online while pregnant. Its sort of girly but in a strong and dignified way. It sounds like the name a European princess or the heroine in a beautiful old poem - in fact, it might be both of these things now I think about it. And so underused!

ParisJeTAime · 19/01/2021 21:31

I love it!

Elora is a name I hear occasionally. Also Elara. But I've never met a Leonora.

TeensWithCrackedScreens · 19/01/2021 21:35

I've known a few Leonies, but for me Leonora will always be Leonora Ashburnham from "The Good Soldier" (his long-suffering wife)!

cobblers123 · 19/01/2021 21:37

My grandmother was Leonora Emmaline. She was usually called Nora.

Luckingfovely · 19/01/2021 21:37

Oooh I love it! Haven't heard the name for years - last time for me too was FMF The Good Soldier (which I now want to read again!)

Totally underused and very lovely name, go for it!

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 19/01/2021 21:50

I don't like Leonora that much as I've never been keen on the "Nora" sound (or "Dora" for that matter - as in the similar Theodora). Weirdly the similar Cora or Laura sound fine to me. I also don't mind Lenore so much (makes me think of Edgar Allan Poe) but that's probably been ruined by the fabric softener!

Name I like with a similar feel to Leonora imo:
Amalia
Antonia
Cordelia
Cressida
Isolde
Eleanor
Helena
Louisa
Wilhelmina
Alexandria
Georgiana
Emmeline
Josephine

Ellmau · 19/01/2021 21:56

I like it a lot.

OR:

Alexandra
Phyllida
Jacobina
Christina
Georgina
Juliana

Firebird83 · 19/01/2021 21:56

Love it! Great nickname possibilities. I also like the Spanish version Leonor.

EileenGC · 19/01/2021 22:06

I prefer Leonor. Leonora gives me a different vibe, similar to Theodora/Isadora which I'm not particularly keen on.

HawkinsLab · 19/01/2021 22:12

Absolutely love Leonora and Leonor (isn’t there a Princess Leonor?). Think Leo is a great nickname too!

ParisJeTAime · 19/01/2021 22:13

I did used to know Leonor actually. She was from Madrid. Very cool character and very clever. I slightly prefer Leonora though, which is very melodic to me.

ParisJeTAime · 19/01/2021 22:15

A Leonor! Not the princess!

heidbuttsupper · 19/01/2021 22:19

Love Leonor

CorianderBee · 19/01/2021 22:21

Leonor sounds like Lenor (the fabric conditioner).

Leonora is nice.

HalfBrick · 19/01/2021 22:21

Love it. Really stands out, in a good way.

AliceMcK · 19/01/2021 22:21

It’s beautiful x

WednesdayWoohan · 19/01/2021 23:22

I like it. Like Leonie too.

DramaAlpaca · 19/01/2021 23:40

Leonora is elegant and beautiful. Unfortunately, Nora is exactly the opposite. I do like Leo or Lennie/Leni as a diminutive though.

VanillaAndOrange · 19/01/2021 23:56

I've never met one or thought much about it before, but I really like it. Other names with the same sort of feel - maybe Aurelia or Miranda?

EileenGC · 20/01/2021 06:35

@CorianderBee

Leonor sounds like Lenor (the fabric conditioner).

Leonora is nice.

It doesn't if pronounced properly. It does if you're trying to read it in English without considering its actual origins.
babynamelover · 20/01/2021 06:42

It's slightly clunky but it's cool.
I also like Theodora.

user2021 · 20/01/2021 07:08

I know a Leonora. It's really a mouthful to say and I feel like it's a name that sounds pretty when you first hear it but in reality it's actually not that nice a name.

Jen435 · 20/01/2021 09:32

Thanks for the feedback! I'd be inclined to go with the Leo nickname over Nora personally, which rules out Elora as you can't really get to that. Not mad about Leonor (I get the Lenor connection, and feels quite spanish when we've got zero spanish heritage)

Second favourite name is Nina, but also like Isobel, Serena, Anya, Willow, Olive, Imogen, Lily. Also like Margot but wouldn't work with surname.

Just got to hope I'm having a girl now... boys names feel much harder!
