Name preference - Ffion or Felicity

Hello,
My second baby is due this summer and I need help with names. We are having a surprise and already have our boys names selected (and keeping to ourselves) but girls names we need help with deciding.

We already have a little girl, Beatrice, who we call Bea, and if we were to have a second daughter we are thinking of either Ffion or Felicity. We like unusual, uncommon but not too 'out there' names.

We aren't Welsh and have no Welsh heritage but always loved the name Ffion (Fee-on), since we holidayed there years ago and heard it said for the first time. Since then it's stuck. We really like how unusual it is. However, I was wondering if it would be seen as out there or weird to name a non-Welsh girl that? The Ff clearly shows it's Welsh but this is the spelling we would go for. And secondly, l've just read somewhere that the slang term for ass in French is 'Fion'. The two words sound different but this has upset me slightly, not because it's put me off the name as such but because if we were ever go to France or French speakers, would her name be laugable? Would this put you off the name? Anyone French, or French-speakers, would you have associated the two? Are there any Ffion's out there who have experienced negativity in regards to this? I'm sure there's many slang terms/meanings from other languages I don't know about for lots of names but I now know about this one, which is unnerving. I do know some French people but would rather not ask for their input, incase it puts me off their name completely. Plus I never share names with anyone I know due to bad experiences previously.

On to our other choice, Felicity. Again I think a really pretty name and I haven't heard of many. The issue I have here is we love to shorten names. Beatrice, is knows as Bea and Felicity would likely be knows as "Flick" (as I've loved it since Neighbours heyday) & I'm not really a fan of "Liss" or "Lissy" as a nickname. So if we put the names together... Bea and Flick... someone said (years ago) oh like "Flick your bean" ... and it's this reason why I no longer share name choices with anyone I know (but equally glad in a way we're thinking about this now and not when it's too late). My question is, did combining Bea and Flick make you think this? Would this be enough to put you off a name? Or am I just being oversensitive?

I can't believe that the two names I love so much, I've almost over researched and it's causing such concern (as I'm convinced this little one is a girl too).

What are your thoughts on the above? Any help would be much appreciated. And any other name suggestions would be greatly received.

Many thanks,
Jaz

The advantage of Ffion is it’s easy to say for English speakers but honestly would assume baby Ffion was Welsh.

I wouldn’t think flick your bean at all! What a filthy mind!

You could call her Flix like Netflix?
That’s what the Felicity I know goes by, she’s very cool.

TheRedFox · 15/01/2021 22:34

I prefer Felicity. Ffion is too like Fiona for me which I'm not keen on.

I'm not sure I'd use Flick as a nickname but the reference you're concerned about wouldn't even occur to me.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 16/01/2021 03:23

I think you are over thinking the "Bea" and "Flick" thing - it wouldn't have occurred to me anyway.

I'd assume a Ffion was Welsh, and I think Beatrice and Felicity are a better match as a sibset anyway, personally.

Other suggestions to fit with Beatrice: Florence, Verity, Imogen, Celia/Cecilia, Julia/Juliet, Rosalind/Rosamund, Helena, Louisa, Marina, Marianne, Josephine, Claudia

HeronLanyon · 16/01/2021 03:39

Only ever known it spelled Ffyon. Don’t think I’ve seen ffion.
I like both names.
Congrats op.

DramaAlpaca · 16/01/2021 05:45

Felicity goes better with Beatrice. I'd be inclined to go for Fliss as a diminutive, I don't like Flick.

bumblingalonghappily · 16/01/2021 05:47

I much prefer Ffion. It's pretty and sting, whereas felicity seems a bit too twee-wishy washy.

bumblingalonghappily · 16/01/2021 05:47

That should say strong!

NoSquirrels · 16/01/2021 05:51

I wouldn’t use Ffion if you have no Welsh background- but that’s my own personal issue, probably.

I also love Felicity and think it’s perfect with Bea.

I wouldn’t make the association you have with ‘Flick’ - I’ve most often heard Fliss for a shortening.

FunnyInjury · 16/01/2021 06:06

Ffion is a boys name but I love Felicity Smile

Kote · 16/01/2021 06:08

Felicity

Imagiraffe · 16/01/2021 06:16

FunnyInjury Ffion is definitely a girls name. I am Welsh and have never heard it used for a boy, but its fairly common for a girl although not over used.

Strange how the two I know are girls!

Both are Welsh though and parents & siblings have Welsh names. I would find just one Welsh name a little iodd (especially if not born there or no other connection). I don't especially like the sound of it either, I find it a bit hard in an English accent. Not so much said by a native welsh speaker.

I'm not massively keen on Felicity, but I do like Flick. Wouldn't go for Bea (bee 🐝) and Flick though personally. (Flick the bee off) and it sounds a lot like a kids program to me 'Bea & Flick'

But all that said, it's easy to over think things on paper & once they're here a haBut if being SO cute you don't think about these things!

Would live to know what boys BAME you've chosen 😁

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 16/01/2021 06:18

Bloody phone NAME obviously!!

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 16/01/2021 06:19

Love Felicity & it definitely goes with Beatrice. I would use Fliss as nn.

Ymlaen · 16/01/2021 06:23

Ffion is a girls name, there are no alternative spellings.

It’s really not!
HeronLanyon · 16/01/2021 08:13

Well fascinating. I know two Irish and Irish roots Ffyons. I need to have ask questions clearly !!! Don’t tell me all this time I’ve been cavorting with yoooneeeck names ?! GrinGrin

FluffyEggsontoast · 16/01/2021 08:40

Felicity

PikaPikaJigglypuff · 16/01/2021 08:46

I prefer Felicity, Ffion nice but a bit too like Fiona for me

Scaredykittycat · 16/01/2021 08:48

No one will ever be able to pronounce Ffion, it’ll be a nightmare for her.

Felicity for sure.

ParisJeTAime · 16/01/2021 08:49

Felicity.

I love Ffion, but only if you are Welsh. Not saying no parent can use a name outside their culture yada yada, but for me, Ffion would be one I would think needs to have Welsh heritage.

Felicity and Beatrice go together well. Don't think Bea and Flick are inevitable or anything to worry about.

MistleTOEboughski · 16/01/2021 08:49

I like Felicity but Flick is very posh horsey girl. I think you need the right background to carry it off. If you are posh enough no-one is going to make jokes about it even in conjunction with Bea.

ParisJeTAime · 16/01/2021 08:50

Fiadh is an irish girls name. Would that be what you're thinking of, to the pp who mentioned it being irish?

Onceuponatimethen · 16/01/2021 08:51

I know a Ffion - it’s a gorgeous name but no one can spell it and everyone will think she’s Welsh and talk to her about Wales constantly. I wouldn’t!

Felicity is great
