Lalita, is it too close to Lolita?

Looking for a unique Indian baby name for Indian-British DD. I like this name but a bit worried about how close it is to Lolita? It has a totally different meaning in Sanskrit though.

I think they're quite close. Depending on the accent they could be pronounced the same. In my accent they'd both pretty much be luh-lita

EssentialHummus · 15/01/2021 15:47

I’d assume it was Lolita mis-spelled. I’ve not heard of the Sanskrit name.

Hoppinggreen · 15/01/2021 15:48

Yes it is

LizFlowers · 15/01/2021 15:48

Yes.

FippertyGibbett · 15/01/2021 15:48

Yes.
Also resembles Lilets.

MrsTerryPratchett · 15/01/2021 15:48

Too close. And in Saaf Laandon basically pronounced the same by many.

And bleugh on Lolita.

Reinventinganna · 15/01/2021 15:48

Depends how you say it. Looking at it I would say Lal ita? I like it

bourbonne · 15/01/2021 15:50

Yes, sorry. I have seen it as an Indian name, but I'm not sure most people would know.

Sarcobaleno · 15/01/2021 16:00

Sadly, yes too close. Shame because it's a pretty name.

BabyMoonPie · 15/01/2021 16:07

They are totally different names to me. Lalita Gupta was a very minor character in an episode of The Big Bang Theory :-)

orangenasturtium · 15/01/2021 16:21

Will your DD have an Indian or British surname? I think with the context of an Indian surname people will make less of an association with Lolita than they would if she has a British surname.

ShowOfHands · 15/01/2021 16:26

My first thought was Little Lalita Gupta from Big Bang who used to be "soooo fat" but got on rather well with Sheldon who believed her to be Princess Panchali.

It won't be unique as it's a known name but will be misheard for Lolita I would imagine.

I really like it though!

sleepingfox · 15/01/2021 16:33

It’s a beautiful name, but I do think it would be easily misread/misheard as Lolita.

NavyFlask · 15/01/2021 16:39

I used to know a Lalita through work. Lolita never occurred to me tbh.
Having looked up the meaning of Lalita, I'm not sure I like it though.

What about something like Sangita? I haven't met a Sangita for 40 years.

Chilldonaldchill · 15/01/2021 16:51

No I don't think so. Lalita is an easily recognised Indian name - reminds me of the character in the Big Bang Theory too.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 15/01/2021 17:40

Yes, Lolita would have been the first thing I thought of, sorry.

LizFlowers · 15/01/2021 18:34

I knew a chap called 'Latit'. He was/is an Indian guy, a vet.

A young Indian woman doctor of my acquaintance called her new daughter, 'Serena', which I thought was lovely.

CopperBeechLeaf · 15/01/2021 18:36

Yes it is

HazelWong · 15/01/2021 18:40

Not a fan in terms of how it works for British people.

How about:

Kavita
Ashni
Sarita
Nimisha
Anjana

MarshaBradyo · 15/01/2021 18:40

Yes

asquirrel · 15/01/2021 18:44

I was thinking just this - I'd see it as an Indian name with an Indian surname and not related to Lolita. Otherwise yes a bit too like Lolita.
partyatthepalace · 16/01/2021 16:24

Yep - and I would avoid because of that.

partyatthepalace · 16/01/2021 16:25

And seconding Serena! - I only just found out it’s also used in India, but a lovely name that works in both cultures.

greenpickles · 20/01/2021 03:05

Well my name is Karlita, so that's what came to mind when I read Lalita :)

JimmyJabs · 20/01/2021 14:23

I know a Lanita, which is very similar but adds another layer of difference from Lolita.
