Hi all. Long time reader/lurker first time poster

I am 6 months pregnant with my first child (DS) and I am naming him Lincoln with the middle name Edward or James. There's no familial ties to the name, I just love it and it goes well with my surname. But my ex - who I was with for four years, has told me he was leaving and wanted nothing to do with me or baby. Now he's suddenly decided the name is crap and demanded I change it because it won't go with his last name

Oh I had to laugh at that. I really did. But I was just wondering, what does everyone think of the name Lincoln? I get it might be too old fashioned but my own name is very old fashioned (I'm named after my Grandma who was named after a flower)

Please forgive me for any spelling errors. I'm having a proper good giggle at my ex as I write this

It’s not completely dreadful but I’m not keen. Might be OK as a middle name

AnxiousAnnie86 · 14/01/2021 21:18

@sassysuspenders Lincoln James! I love it! Xxx

NataliaOsipova · 14/01/2021 21:23

Be prepared for people to ask “What’s his name?”, “no, his first name?” - Lincoln is definitely a surname to my ears (cf Abraham Lincoln).

Jessbow · 14/01/2021 22:45

As long as you can manage the silly ''did they concieve him on a sneaky weekend away'' jokes.

Babydust13 · 14/01/2021 23:20

I think Lincoln James is a lovely name 💙 wish we could think of a name our boy is due in May and we've got nothing

Congratulations

Orphlids · 14/01/2021 23:30

It’s not really to my normal taste, but I think it sounds very cool! I think you might find it explodes in popularity soon though, as I have heard it a few times recently. I’d certainly choose it over Jacob. There are so many Jacobs, it’s instantly forgettable. I think Lincoln is an exciting name. Bad luck to your idiot ex. And the very best of luck to you.

I'm from lincoln and it seems abit odd someone naming their baby that, most people from the east midlands will associate it with that

pinkyboots1 · 15/01/2021 07:19

I'm loving the name Lincoln and even more its shortening to Linc... my Mum always said that before you name your child you should think if it suits a baby, suits a toddler, suits a teen, suits an adult and suits a pensioner ... if it does ( and Linc does) then you're onto a winner x

Enko · 15/01/2021 08:41

Its not for me but nor do I i think omg thats horrid its an Oh OK. Name for me.

As for your x. Well no problem as he won't have his surname will he? If you are feeling generous you could always allow him to chose a 2nd middlename but Lincoln stays

Much prefer Jacob or your middle name choices. Agree with pp, it's not old-fashioned, It's 'trendy surname'. The problem with 'surname first names' is that the child can often sound like a firm of accountants.

KeepOnKeepingOnKeepingOn · 15/01/2021 09:22

Love Lincoln - cool name!

MimiDaisy11 · 15/01/2021 10:01

I'm not usually into surnames as first names but I do quite like this one. I personally wouldn't use it but I do think it's one of the better ones. Also I agree with others that it's more modern than old-fashioned.

Sorry about your ex. It's amazing he thinks he thinks he has a say after telling you he wants nothing to do with the baby.

partyatthepalace · 16/01/2021 17:40

I don’t like it, but I don’t hate it. Has an American feel. It’s ok.

Your ex is a CF!

VienneseWhirligig · 16/01/2021 17:43

At least you're spelling it correctly. My colleague has a Lincoln, or so I thought for the last few years when writing a Christmas card. Turns out it's spelled Lynkonn. (Her daughter is Renezmai)

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 16/01/2021 17:47

I like it mainly because I like Link as the short name.

GavsCloakOfInvisibility · 16/01/2021 17:48

Reminds me of Rhett and Link from Good Mythical Morning. So a positive association for me!

Your ex is a twat Grin

Yika · 16/01/2021 18:47

I love Lincoln. Wouldn't think of the town at all. Makes me think of Abraham Lincoln.

Alwayswrongneverright · 16/01/2021 20:20

Beautiful place.
Whilst I don't think your ex should have any say or give him his surname... I really don't like it as a name I'm afraid, just as I don't like chester as a name. I also don't think it goes well with the surname Baker sorry.
Jacob, James and Edward are all amazing names

JiltedJohnsJulie · 16/01/2021 20:27

The name Lincoln was discussed on a Woman's Hour special focusing on names a few weeks ago. It was one of the names becoming very popular in the North of England. If you love it, go for it.

I can believe that. I've heard of quite a few baby Lincolns recently.
