Due my 2nd baby, only 14 weeks so don't know if we're having a boy or girl yet but what do people think of these names.

Blaine for a boy.
Blaire for a girl.

My partner keeps comparing Blaire to "bleugh" no idea if that's spelt properly but as in the noise you make in disgust, which is annoying but doesn't put me off the name.
Opinions appreciated!

I absolutely love both of these names. I actually know a girl called Blaine

galaxy9 · 14/01/2021 10:24

You might like Blake? Can be for a boy or girl

NeedCoffeeToSurvive · 14/01/2021 10:30

@galaxy9 thank you! I believe it's Scottish in origin and means Yellow but I might be wrong.

Not overly a fan of Blake, my name begins with A, our sons name begins with C and my partners begins with D so we're ideally wanting to throw a B into the mix.

Jenifr · 14/01/2021 11:38

@SpaceBlanket

Tony Blair fans are ya?
Wow. Unnecessary.

To the OP - if you like a name, you go for it.

villamariavintrapp · 14/01/2021 11:42

Sorry, I agree with you partner. Bleurgh. Tony Blair. Blair witch.. and chill blain. Also not a fan of boys names for girls, so..

WaxOnFeckOff · 14/01/2021 11:58

Brooke
Betty
Beatrice

Barney
Bradley
Ben

ParisJeTAime · 14/01/2021 12:07

They aren't to my taste, but I also dislike Blake on boys, but for some reason like it on girls Confused.

Blaine makes me think of Bain (from marvel) and Blaire does make me think of Tony Blair.

That said, I'd get used to any of them if I met a child irl with any of those names.

If your DH doesn't like it and you're only just in the second trimester though, I would keep looking.

Fleur is a bit like Blair as well.

PlantPotting · 14/01/2021 12:07

Sorry I don't like the names

Barnaby
Bodhi
Beatrice

PutOnAHappyFace · 14/01/2021 12:12

I love Blaire but DH has said no and keeps comparing it to Tony Blair.

NeedCoffeeToSurvive · 14/01/2021 12:29

Thanks all! The Tony Blair reference has been considered but we're not bothered about it, would people say the same if we wanted to use the name Tony? Or Dominic? Or Matthew? If everyone avoided every name ever used by someone in politics there'd be a lot of very nice names avoided.

@WaxOnFeckOff I like your suggestion of Barney, although I now can't stop thinking about that purple dinosaur thing called Barney that was on TV when I was younger. It was like a less terrifying version of Blobby.

WaxOnFeckOff · 14/01/2021 12:31

Barney short for Barnaby and is a lovey underused (I think) classic.

Is Barney the dinosaur even still on?

user1493494961 · 14/01/2021 12:31

Sorry, not to my taste. I like Beatrice, Beth, Barnaby, Benedict, Benjamin.

WaxOnFeckOff · 14/01/2021 12:32

Also Bernie/Berni for either gender :)

WaxOnFeckOff · 14/01/2021 12:36

I don't mind Blair for a boy without the e on the end.

Brodie?

ParisJeTAime · 14/01/2021 12:41

While it wouldn't necessarily put me off if I loved the name otherwise, it really isn't the same as Tony, Dominic etc. It's the difference between people calling their child Hendrix or Bowie vs James or David. Many people called David, Dominic etc., but Hendrix and Bowie are more likely to be linked to Jimmy H and David B iyswim Smile.

But, if your DH dislikes the sound of Blaire for a girl, I suppose it's a no go anyway.

How about Riley or Harper?

NeedCoffeeToSurvive · 14/01/2021 12:57

@ParisJeTAime I get what you mean, I think every name has an association with it whether it's a negative one or something positive and everyone thinks differently so they'll always be a few people who don't like a particular name.

Thankfully he's not completely against the name Blaire and doesn't hate it, he's said if I want to go with that name he's fine with it, but he wouldn't personally choose it himself and keeps making jokes about it, plus I don't want him to agree just to make me happy because he knows I love the name, I want us both to like a name and mutually agree on it together.

I like your suggestion of Riley, such a pretty name and would go really well with our last name although I'm not keen on Harper.

@user1493494961 I like Benedict but I feel like I'd have people asking me every day if I chose the name because of Benedict Cumberbatch, plus it sounds a bit old fashioned and I imagine would be shortened to Ben by most people which I don't know if I like that or not.

Blair is a Scottish boys name.
Never seen it spelled with an E.

NeedCoffeeToSurvive · 14/01/2021 13:09

@PutOnAHappyFace I love the name with an E but without the E I'm not so keen which I'm aware is strange, I reckon we'd get away with it by just adding that E on the end, to me at least it makes it sound more feminine and makes me think less of the association with Tony Blair.

OP posts:
WaxOnFeckOff · 14/01/2021 13:09

I haven't either @FelicityPike but I have come across a Nairne as a female alternative to Nairn so I guess it's the same principal. I prefer either as a boys name though.

Luckyelephant1 · 14/01/2021 13:13

I like Blaire but I'd go without the E as Blair. Makes me think of Blair from Gossip Girl rather than Tony Blair 🤷‍♀️.

Blaine is OK but I much prefer Blake.

NeedCoffeeToSurvive · 14/01/2021 13:15

@FelicityPike definitely a Scottish name yes, Spelling variations include Blair/Blare and Blaire, the one ending in E is more commonly used in America and is the more common way of spelling when used for a girl, at least this is what I've learnt from researching online. Blair is primarily used for a boy.

OP posts:
NeedCoffeeToSurvive · 14/01/2021 13:21

The more I'm seeing Blair written without the E the more I'm liking it, before now I definitely would have added the E so thank you all for that!

Why is choosing baby names so difficult! With our first it was simple, knew the name we wanted for a boy before I even became pregnant so we didn't even have to discuss it. This time we actually have to think of something and it's hard.
