You are among nerdy friends here, OP!

You might find this ONS tool helpful to visualise popularity over time: www.ons.gov.uk/visualisations/dvc363/babyindex.html. You can see the popularity of the top 100 names since 1904.

@ZoyaTheDestroyer very interesting indeed! Think I'm going to rule out Jack (My DP's favourite). it is a really cool name & Harry feels like a nice boy name. But look how long they've coasted at the top. Interesting to see Alexander & Max where they are.

I included the girls one too and like that my DD & my top runner are lower down too 😁❤

Max is my favourite, seems I'm in the minority! Love the data.

Max
James
Alexander
Jack
Harry
George

Alexander - always loved this name but one of my besties got in there first!

Jack - classic, solid, no-fuss (which I like in boys' names.)
James - Ok, but a bit dull
Max - millions of them around right now

Harry and George joint bottom - also millions of them. I just don't like the sound of George.

Snuffleupagus2021 · 14/01/2021 20:05

Similar to my list of boys names except I'd have Hugo and Oscar there and ditch Jack, Harry and George!

Alexander - all time fav but just too many Alexes around these days.
Harry - not my fav, Prince Harry has ruined it for me
Max - lovely, in my top 3. Although it is a bit of a dog's name - still love it!
Jack - weak compared to others
George - too stuffy for me
James - a true classic and likely fewer around than when we were growing up

Pudding01 · 14/01/2021 21:29

My DP likes Oscar. Unfortunately for me there is a cat in my family called Oscar and now I can't not picture the bloody cat!! 😂

I have to say they’re all very similar as they’re all inoffensive, popular boys names. I’m not really sure it matters which you chose with names like that...

PBaby227 · 15/01/2021 11:27

All are nice classic names!

My ranking would be:
Max - love this
Alexander - like it with Alex as nickname
Jack - classic (although v popular where I live)
James - common but classic
Harry - on the posher side for me
George - too posh sounding for me

Pudding01 · 16/01/2021 10:51

@PBaby227 thank you. Isn't it funny what you class as posh, another classes as common 😂 PP said Harry wasn't classy enough with Erin (my DD). Suppose it's all subjective...

Much easier choosing a girls name!

James - classic, underused. Jamie a lovely nn
Max - cool, underused. Would give a full name eg Maximus
Alexander ditto an underused classic, Alex nice nn also
George - I like it but there are a lot of them
Harry - I quite like it, but there are a lot of them - prefer as a nn for Henry
Jack - there are way way way too many of them

Alexander
Harry
Max
Jack
George
James

Pudding01 · 17/01/2021 08:56

I think Harry has to dropped from the list. Maybe Jack too - My DP's favourite 😬

Thanks everyone

Quite amused by your list of names ... the 6 names are my son’s name, my husbands 1st and middle name, my brother, my dad and my father in law! (Although in our family, Harry is Henry on the birth certificate) Great list!

Liana2021 · 18/01/2021 00:13

Love all these names, George and James would be my pick.

Lumosknox · 18/01/2021 01:50

Alex is my favourite and really like George too. I feel like Jack and Harry are quite common (I'm a teacher) and for some reason I always think of Max as a dog's name!

Bilgepumper · 18/01/2021 01:51

Alexander
Jack
James
Harry
George
Max

Changechangychange · 18/01/2021 02:03

Alexander - love it. I hate hate hate Xander as a nickname (far too try-hard), but luckily there are also Alex, Ali, Sandy and Sasha
Max - I like it, and know a surprising number of lovely little Max’s, but wouldn’t use it for my own child. Can’t really say why. Maxim is awful, might as well name your child Loaded or GQ. Or Cosmo, I guess.
Jack - ditto. Also every adult Jack I have known has been a bit of a wideboy. No idea why. Wide range of social classes and professions.
James - I just think of James from Thomas and Friends. Sorry, blame DS for that.
George and Harry - not naming my child after a Royal baby.

My other choices would be William, Theodore or Marcus.

MonicaGellerHyphenBing · 18/01/2021 15:27

I have a James, so naturally that is my favourite. I have always loved it despite its popularity. I do know a lot of babies and toddlers called James but it’s not something that bothers me. Also love Alexander and Max.

Am less fussed on Jack, Harry and George.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 18/01/2021 15:40

Alexander
Harry
Max
Jack
George
James

I like George & I like it with Erin more than the others

I don't like James or Jack

If you'd call him Alex then I'd say I like all the others about the same
